Chapter Nine: System Countdown
last update2026-09-17 05:22:38

Samuel stretched out his right hand, summoning his Black-fanged Greatsword. The three men widened their eyes, exchanging apprehensive glances.

The onlookers showed shocked expressions. Everyone knew Samuel was ordinary. He'd not awakened his Qi at the age of twenty-four. Hence, he could not take care of his mother till her death.

“What is going on?” The scar-faced man asked. “I thought he wasn't an Evolved.”

“He wasn't!” The second man answered. “He's nothing but a carrier!”

He scrutinized Samuel with his beady eyes apprehensively. “Were you hiding your awakening all this while?”

It was no news that several Evolved wanted to leave a low-key life. So they hid their awakening, pretending to be ordinary people.

“I don't think he was hiding his ability…” The third man replied, rubbing his beard thoughtfully. “He must have made a deal with an Abyssal Creature…”

Samuel gripped his greatsword. That wasn't far from the truth. But the Abyssal System wasn't an Abyssal Creature. In fact, he didn't know anything about its origin. It was something far greater than any Abyssal Creature he'd heard of.

“He must have killed Declan and the others…” the bearded man continued. “After all, he owed the Black Gang.”

The scar-faced man stepped forward. “You'll die today, for selling your soul for power!”

He lunged forward, brandishing his sword. The other two men followed, slashing their swords in imaginary arcs.

Samuel leaped backward and swung his sword to block the scar-faced man's attack. He then fell backwards, evading two deadly strikes. With a hard push to the ground, he sent himself skidding away from them.

The three men exchanged surprised glances. Someone who had awakened recently shouldn't be fighting like this. This solidified their suspicions that Samuel had sold his soul for power.

“Kill that heretic!” The scar-faced man yelled.

Samuel decided not to attack him first. His attribute was Regeneration. It'd be difficult to kill him. He'd regenerate from any wound, as long as he didn't die from it.

Samuel's gaze locked on the beady-eyed man. He couldn't let the assassin linger in the fight any longer. He had no skill to detect the man's Invisibility skill. It'd drain his Qi if he left the man unchecked.

‘Activate Ghost Serpent,’ he muttered with a dark expression.

[Ghost Serpent, LV1 (C-Grade gear) activated!]

A purple hue engulfed him. It made the three men step back vigilantly. When it cleared, he was already donning light armour. It had purple metal plates, and its outfit was black.

[Ghost Walk activated!]

All of a sudden, Samuel found himself standing behind the beady-eyed man.

[Ghost Walk allows you to teleport anywhere you think of. It must be within 50 meters!]

‘Got you.’ He swung his sword at the man's neck, hoping to decapitate him.

But the beady-eyed man was experienced. The moment Samuel vanished, he crouched. His heart skipped a beat as the greatsword sliced off the top of his hair.

Samuel wanted to slash him again, but he vanished into thin air. No, he didn't vanish… he turned invisible. If Samuel hadn't seen the man's skill, he would have been mistaken.

The bearded man sprinted toward him, swinging his sword at him. His eyes had become bloodshot… They resembled those of a killer.

Samuel squinted, raising his sword to brace for a devastating attack. And it came faster than expected.

An air construct hit his sword with a clang, causing his hands to tremble. It was the shape of a sword.

The bearded man slashed at empty air again, closing in on Samuel. “Die, you murderer!”

[Ghost Walk activated!]

Samuel vanished and reappeared behind the man.

[Savage Pounce, LV3 activated!]

[-1 MP]

He pounced at the bearded man, knocking him down with his weight. The impact broke the man's spine, blood spurting out of his mouth. He passed out instantly.

Samuel raised his greatsword and brought it down. He wasn't trying to kill the man. It was only a feint. The System didn't ask him to kill anyone. Then there were the onlookers. They were watching him like hawks. If he killed anyone, they'd believe he sold his soul.

Clang!

Something blocked his sword, causing a cold smile to spread across his lips. Although it was empty air, he could tell that the beady-eyed man was there.

[Savage Pounce, LV3 activated!]

[-1 MP]

He leaped forward, bumping into something solid. A scream filled the air as something crashed to the ground with a thud. A few seconds later, the beady-eyed man appeared. He was lying limp on the ground, his ribs broken.

Only the scar-faced man remained now.

Samuel turned toward him and gripped his greatsword. He was going to his strongest foe so far.

The scar-faced man gazed at the bodies of his comrades lying on the ground. One was unconscious, while the other was groaning weakly. He looked back at Samuel.

“In all my life as a hunter,” he spoke in a deep voice, “I haven't seen a powerful carrier like you. You aren't even a hunter, yet you took down two of my comrades.”

He paused, raising his chin slightly. “If I may ask, what is your class? You displayed two skills a few moments ago… Obviously, your gear grants you one skill.”

Silence.

He gripped his sword. “I’ll consider recruiting you into the Red Cross guild. We'll forget what you did.”

“No,” Samuel replied. He pointed at the scar-faced man with his greatsword. “You'll answer my questions when I'm done defeating you.”

The man's gaze turned deadly. “You've made a grave mistake. And you won't live to regret it.”

[5mins 20secs remaining…]

The system's countdown made the atmosphere heavier.

Samuel slid into his shack undetected. The news of his mother's death had died down, and everyone was returning to their lives. His eyes became teary when he saw his mother's corpse lying on the ragged bed. She hadn't been buried yet. What had he expected? He shook his head bitterly. Who would want to bury a poor person like his mother? Society saw poor people as trash. The world treated them worse than other ordinary humans.Samuel didn't complain. He carried the corpse out of the shack, toward the woods north of the town. Without any disturbance, he buried his mother.Tears streamed down his eyes endlessly as he remembered the last moment he'd spent with her. He wanted to run, but he couldn't. His tendons had been severed. He'd lost because of his miscalculations. He'd greatly underestimated Samuel… Partly because he'd recently awakened his attribute.“Samuel, listen to me…” he pleaded. “W-we can settle this. We'll return to the settlement, as if nothing happened.”“You should have thought about that before killing me.”Samuel's expression was cold. He stopped an inch away from Declan, his eyebrows furrowed.“Wait…” Declan crawled backward. “Don't you wanna know everything?”Samuel remained unblinking.“Someone paid me to kil
