Chapter 30 : The promise of salvation

While Agane was walking toward the tower accompanied by several soldiers, she noticed something from above.

The area outside the tower was vast, so many people witnessed two people falling from the high structure.

"What in the world is that?"

"Looks like someone jumped from the top again," a soldier remarked.

Events like that were already common to them, especially in towns with impoverished communities.

Nevertheless, Agane didn't let them crash, so she volunteered to help.

Blue energy emanated from her body, wrapping around her arm until it took the shape of a dragon.

"Fifth wind dragon technique: Dazzling Wind!"

She punched the air, unleashing a blue dragon that plummeted toward the falling pair. The sheer force of the wind slowed down their rapid descent.

Before the two could hit the ground, they were seemingly swallowed by the wind dragon and carried directly to where Agane was standing.

A moment later, they rolled across the ground until they ended up right at Agane's feet.

Nathaniel's head bumped against Agane's foot, and he collapsed unconscious. Agane immediately recognized him and smirked.

"Wait, what is this idiot doing here?"

Both of them were fast asleep, leaving no chance to ask what had really happened. Agane simply ordered her men to take them to the base for interrogation.

NATHANIEL'S POV

Hours passed before I woke up from my sleep. I honestly had no idea how I survived; all I could remember was grabbing the slave woman in mid-air.

I forced myself to move despite the pain in my back, probably because the bed was so hard.

"Wait, where am I?"

I didn't know where I was, but when I noticed the iron bars beside me, a bad feeling washed over me—I was locked up.

"Wait, why am I imprisoned?" Shocked, I suddenly stood up and rushed to the door.

"Hey, wait! Is anyone out there? Let me out of here!" I yelled.

I panicked and frantically shook the bars, hoping the guards would answer me, until I finally grew exhausted and sat down on the floor.

"Please! I didn't do anything wrong!!"

I had no idea why I was locked up because, if I really thought about it, I had just saved the life of someone who was about to commit suicide.

A moment later, while I was making a ruckus in the cell, a voice suddenly shut me up.

"Hey! Can you keep it down, human?" someone shouted.

I was startled and felt a chill run down my spine because the voice came from the dark corner of the room.

"Wait, that voice...?"

When I turned around, I saw Suwi chained to the wall of the cell, wrapped in chains infused with a sealing spell.

It was used to prevent a creature from utilizing their energy.

"Suwi? Wait, why are you here?"

"Tsk, shouldn't I be the one asking you that?" she snapped angrily.

She spoke to me with irritation as she questioned me. "Why did you come back to this place after their leader set you free? Are you out of your mind?"

I admitted to her that even I had no idea why I was there. "I don't know why I'm locked up either. As far as I remember, I jumped from the top of the tower to save that woman, and then I passed out."

After learning that, she informed me that the soldiers had brought me there along with the descendant of the wind dragon.

She was probably referring to General Agane. That didn't come as a surprise, considering Agane likely harbored a deep grudge against me because of my meddling regarding the soul eaters.

"It looks like she really doesn't believe we have no ill intentions toward her town," I said.

"Tsk, you had a chance to escape and you threw it away. You really are a fool," she scolded harshly.

Her scoldings never stopped, and it was obvious she didn't want to see me.

I stepped closer to Suwi and asked how she was doing, but as expected, she gave me an angry retort.

"Can you please stop talking to me like we know each other?"

Suddenly, I felt irritated by her rudeness, and I couldn't stop myself from talking back about all the effort I put into helping her.

"You know, you should be thankful that I'm still determined to do everything as your friend, yet all you do is snap at me."

Against my expectations, she just called me a fool again. "Can you stop doing that? And just so you know, I have no intention of having any connection with a low-class creature like you," Suwi stated.

"You're just going to get yourself killed if you insist on sticking close to me," she threatened.

I just let out a sigh at her stubbornness. I didn't know if I should boast to her that I was going to save this world, but she wouldn't believe a word of it anyway.

"What do you actually want me to do for you to accept me as your friend?" I asked.

"Do you think I'd ever accept a useless good-for-nothing like you as my friend?" she retorted.

I let out a sigh of disappointment, realizing her arrogance hadn't changed despite the fact that she had nothing to boast about.

"Do you think if I set you free from here, you'd consider me a friend?"

Upon hearing that, she didn't hesitate to insult me all over again. "Ha! What can a peasant like you possibly do to help me? Don't make me laugh."

I felt a bit provoked by her contempt, but I admitted to her that even though I had the ability to set her free, I had no intention of taking her out of that place.

"I can't set you free to escape from here because, honestly, this is the safest place for you right now."

I made her understand her situation: the race war was only growing more complicated because dark lords were targeting soul eaters like her.

The world where she could move around safely was shrinking, and in just a few days, many would attempt on her life—not just the dark lords, but the people of Eskapa as well.

That wasn't new to her, especially since she had fled the island of Gatamuri, which belonged to the weapons master Yuki.

After Xxv rejoined Eskapa, he asked Yuki to provide protection for Suwi, which was why Yuki had given her one of his islands just to serve as her home.

However, because of her stubbornness and immense pride, she had run away from there and gone back to wandering around. "You were safe on the island given to you, yet you still ran away. I guess you really are more foolish than I am," I teased.

"Stop it! They wanted to trap me on that island; they were plotting something evil against me!"

"Do you really think Yuki was plotting against you? You know, he could kill you if he genuinely wanted to, but he wouldn't do that because of Xxv," I replied.

I let her know that Xxv was precious to Yuki, who considered him a younger brother. That was why, even though it was forbidden and could put him in danger, Yuki secretly gave Suwi shelter.

"But I think Yuki breathed a sigh of relief when you ran away from his island because he didn't have to worry about you anymore," I added.

Suwi suddenly fell silent and didn't respond to what I said. I didn't know if she was annoyed, but she couldn't take her hostile glare off me.

A few seconds later, her tone turned serious as she asked why I knew the things I had mentioned despite being an ordinary human.

"I don't sense anything special about you, so I can't believe you know those things."

I wanted to tell her the truth about what I knew, but Koko's words suddenly crossed my mind.

If they found out who I really was, everything would become complicated. She might curse me if she found out I was the one who scripted the tragedy in her life and the reason she had been hunted her whole life.

"Let's just say I have the ability to see the past and future of creatures," I made up an excuse.

Suwi wasn't convinced by what I said because I didn't possess a Crimson Item or a Crimson Curse to have an ability like that.

"Do you really think I'll believe what you're saying?"

I let out a sigh of frustration.

"Fine, I can't force you to believe me. Even so, I know the sorrow you've endured for a long time, and I also know the dark future waiting for you," I said seriously.

"I won't blame you if you don't believe me, but I am determined to help you and change your future."

Suwi froze and was left speechless, probably because it was the first time she had ever heard genuine care from someone else.

"Fool, can you please stop that? If you've seen my future, that means it's already destined and cannot be changed," she said, looking down.

I could feel the sorrow in her; based on her words, it seemed like she had already accepted her fate.

More than anyone else, I knew her. Beneath all her trials, her desire to live remained. Despite this dark world, she had never tried to commit suicide because she still hoped her dream would come true.

"No, Suwi. If you've accepted that fate for yourself... well, I haven't," I said earnestly.

"I'm going to change it, and I'm ready to do everything to give you a bright future."

She stared blankly after hearing my words. I knew she had long wanted to break free from her situation and experience a normal life—

A life without war, living peacefully with family and friends.

Yet she had no one to consider family or friends because her whole life had been surrounded by enemies, leaving her with no choice but to hide.

I wanted to change that and replace it with happy memories so she could receive the wonderful fate she truly deserved.

That's right. I was going to change what I had written in my comic about her destiny. I was going to rewrite her fate.
