At that moment Sarah tears started flowing like a river down her cheeks. Her perfect makeup began to smear as she wiped her eyes with the back of her hand, without being told she knew, if she doesn't do anything now she's going to lose everything, all of this gift's, all money.

“James and his family manipulated me! They took advantage of me when I was vulnerable!” Her voice got higher and more desperate.

“I have serious medical issues, Hector. They promised they would help pay for my treatment. That's the only reason I'm with him!”

She looked around at everyone staring at her, then back at Hector with pleading eyes.

“I was going to break up with James after today anyway. I was going to come find you and tell you how I really felt. This is your fault for not being patient with me!” Her voice cracked as she pointed an accusing finger at him.

“And why didn't you tell me you were rich, you hide it away from me? How was I supposed to know?”

Hector stared at her in complete disbelief. Just minutes ago she was calling him a loser and a pauper. Now she was making up sob stories and trying to blame him for everything. The lies just kept pouring out of her mouth like water.

But then something shifted in Hector's expression. Maybe he could have a little fun with this. Maybe Sarah deserved to be played just like she played him.

“I won the lottery,” Hector said with a straight face.

“I thought I'd arrange all of this as a surprise for you after your presentation. But you completely ruined it.”

Sarah's eyes went huge like saucers. Lottery. So that's where the money came from. Her brain immediately started working on how to get close to him again.

“How much did you win from the lottery?” Sarah asked, trying to sound sweet and caring instead of greedy.

“Ten million dollars,” Hector said simply.

Immediately Sarah's forehead wrinkled just a little bit. Her smile looked forced now as she tried to process what that meant.

Before she could say anything, Hector kept talking.

“I used all the money I won to buy these things for you. Every single dollar. I wanted you to see how much I loved you.”

Sarah's expression stayed pretty on the outside, but inside she was screaming. This idiot spent everything? All ten million gone on jewelry and gifts? Unless she could sell all of this stuff, she wouldn't actually have any cash. She'd just have a bunch of expensive things she'd have to find buyers for.

Her mind raced, trying to figure out how to fix this situation.

“Let's talk about this somewhere else, please.” Sarah's voice got softer, more vulnerable.

“My life was threatened and yours too. That's why I said all those horrible things. I didn't mean any of it.”

She reached out with both hands toward the briefcases, trying to motion for the women to close them up so they could leave together.

But the women didn't move. They didn't even look at Sarah. Their eyes stayed locked on Hector, waiting for his orders.

Hector spoke up at that moment, his voice cutting through Sarah's desperate pleading.

“I have nothing to discuss with you, Sarah. Unless I do this.”

Sarah's face showed confusion. What did he mean by that? What was he talking about?

Before she could ask, Hector turned to the women in black suits.

“Sell everything. All of it. And donate every single dollar to charity.”

Sarah felt like the ground just disappeared under her feet.

“How can you sell everything you bought for me and give it to charity? That's not your decision to make!” Her voice came out high and panicked.

Hector looked at her with those same cold eyes.

“You rejected me, Sarah. You called me a loser in front of everyone. You're not worthy of these gifts anymore.” His voice stayed calm while Sarah was falling apart.

“If you really love me, you'll accept this as your punishment and say yes to my proposal. But this time, it'll be with a different ring.”

Sarah's face turned red with anger and desperation.

“I won't let you sell everything and give it away to charity! How can you just throw away all the money you won from the lottery?”

“I can and I will,” Hector said simply.

The leader of the women in black suits reached into her briefcase and pulled out an official-looking document. She held it out toward Hector with a pen.

“Sir, please sign here to confirm the donation.”

Immediately Sarah opened her mouth to make one last desperate argument, but Hector took the pen and signed his name on the paper without even hesitating.

The moment his signature was complete, all seven women smiled and bowed again.

“Master, thank you for your generous donation to our company. We run programs for disabled children, and this gift will change so many lives. We are truly grateful.”

Sarah's heart turned to stone in that moment. There was no going back now. The papers were signed. The donation was official. Hector had foolishly thrown away her gifts just to punish her.

The women in black suits packed up their open briefcases and walked out of the room, leaving nothing behind but the memory of all that wealth.

Hector turned to Sarah one more time.

“Will you marry me?”

Sarah looked down at him like he was something disgusting she found on the bottom of her shoe.

“You're nothing but a poor rat again. An illiterate fool who just threw away ten million dollars like an idiot.” Her voice dripped with hatred.

“I could never be with somebody like you.”

She turned her back on Hector and walked straight to James, wrapping her arm around his like nothing had happened.

“I'm sorry, baby. I only wanted the jewelry, for our betterment not him. I would never actually consider giving someone like Hector a chance in my life.”

Hector just smiled. Not because he thought Sarah would change her mind - he knew exactly who she was now. He just wanted to see how far her sweet tongue and lies would go. And she didn't disappoint him.

“Sarah, I gave you a second chance and you chose your greed over everything else. You're going to regret this.”

Sarah didn't even flinch at his words anymore. She didn't care what he said or what he threatened. To her, Hector was nobody.

A taxi.Pulling up on the opposite side of the driveway, unhurried, stopping with the particular ease of a driver who knows where he is going and is in no hurry to prove it. The door opened. A figure emerged — a man, stepping out with the kind of quiet, unstudied ease that tends to belong to people who have never needed to think about how they carry themselves because they have simply always carried themselvescorrectly.Sarah looked away. She was already three steps toward the entrance, already refocusing, already—But the shape of him was wrong.Or rather, it was too right. Too familiar in the set of the shoulders and the angle of the head and the particular way he moved that she had spent enough time studying — more time than she would ever admit to anyone including herself — to know at a distance, in poor lighting, from a considerable angle. She stopped walking.Turned back, just slightly, just enough. And the recognition hit her with the force of something dropped from a height."I

She was not a foolish woman. Whatever else the last twenty-four hours had stripped from her, they had not stripped that. And she knew knew with the bone-deep instinct of someone who had spent years in environments where manipulation was a professional skill — that offers which arrive at your lowest moment wearing the precise shape of what you most need are the offers that deserve the most scrutiny."They heard what happened", she thought. "Somehow they heard, and they calculated the window, and they called." She turned her phone over in her hand. "Someone recommended me to them. Someone who knows me, who knows how I present myself, who knows enough about my situation to point this person in my direction at this exact moment."That was the part that unsettled her most. Not the offer. Not the timeline. Not the vague and carefully withheld details of what she would be required to do in return. The fact that someone had pointed him toward her."A con", she thought, and the thought arri

Sarah's breath shifted slightly."Not a partial solution. Not a temporary relief that buys you a few weeks before the same problems return wearing different clothes. A way out. A genuine, complete exit from the situation you are currently in — the kind of exit that doesn't just stop the bleeding but removes the wound entirely." His voice was steady and certain in the way that people are certain when they are not guessing. "Everything that is pressing on you right now — the business, the reputation, the people who are making your life difficult, the doors that have closed — I can make all of it disappear. Not diminish. Not become more manageable. Disappear. As though none of it happened."The apartment was very quiet.Sarah was aware of her own heartbeat in a way she hadn't been a minute ago."In exchange," the man continued, "you would need to do something for us. Something specific. I'm not going to tell you what it is on this phone call — not because I'm being evasive, but because

"I was told you were composed. Collected. Someone who chooses her words carefully." A brief pause. The morning arrived whether Sarah wanted it to or not.Sarah sat in her apartment with the curtains drawn against the daylight she didn't feel entitled to and tried to think.Tried.The thinking kept collapsing on itself, each attempt at a clear thought dissolving before it could complete itself, replaced immediately by the next wave of the same churning, formless dread that had kept her company through most of the night. She had barely slept. Every time she had approached the edge of sleep, something had jolted her back — a sound, a memory, the replaying of a specific moment or a specific face or a specific silence on the other end of a line that had told her everything she needed to know about how completely things had changed. She pressed her fingers against her temples.James wouldn't listen. She had tried. “No problem,” Madam Veronica said, and he could still hear the relief sitting quietly underneath her words, the particular relief of someone who has put down something heavy and is still adjusting to the absence of the weight.“I'll be expecting your call.”Then the line went dead.Hector lowered the phone slowly. He stood there in the corridor of the mansion for a moment, and the quiet that had felt peaceful twenty minutes ago felt different now — charged with something that had no interest in being peaceful. His jaw tightened. After the warning that had been delivered clearly, without ambiguity, without the kind of softening language that leaves room for reinterpretation. After he had made it explicitly understood that Madam Veronica was not a person who stood alone in the world,
