Holden smiled nervously. Where did this nerd man come from anyway? “I'm sorry, sir.”

“Shall we proceed to my office so I can get started immediately?”

“This is your first day, sir. I'm not telling you what to do or anything like that, but on the first day, the CEO looks around the company and sees how the workers are doing and later in the day we throw a welcome party.”

Charles raised a hand. “I don't want a welcome party. And, I am here to work so that's what I'll do first. I'll check up on the workers later. It should be done when they are not aware so we can know those who are slacking on their job.”

Holden smiled again. “I love your strategy, sir.”

Charles resumed walking.

As they went, Holden tried all the manner of approach he could to get Charles to agree to the welcome party but Charles didn't have any of it.

Holden knew he was in a tight spot. It was a matter of time before Charles figured out all the money that had disappeared mysteriously from the company's account.

“This is your office, sir,” Holden opened the door. “If you don't like the sofas and table, we could replace them right away.”

“They are okay. I shouldn't get too comfortable while working,” Charles said.

Holden chuckled. He was in a big trouble now. “So, there are a few things that require your attention.”

He turned on the computer and a few minutes later, Holden was sweating. Almost all the things he told Charles, he had to bring up an explanation to Charles because of his inquisitiveness.

This would not work. Holden loosened his tie as he watched Charles read something. He only needed a CEO that'd do as he wishes, not one like Charles.

He needs one that will gullibly obey him and in the end be the scapegoat that will be used to clear up any mess that occurred but Charles doesn't have any of those criteria.

“The income here was twice this month, what happened?” Charles asked, calling back Holden's attention to another series of questions.

Later that evening, Holden held an emergency meeting with the executive members of the company.

“We must get rid of that man,” Holden said. “I have not had a sip of water since I came today, all because of work. He questioned everything.”

“The way he even dealt with Miss Dakota,” one of them shook his head, “I felt sorry for her.”.

“Have you heard from her?”

“Yeah, she resigned,” Holden said. “I promised to get her back in her position and she has also promised to work hand-in-hand with us to get rid of Mr Charles.”

“This is my last bus stop, guys. I am not leaving this company until I'm sixty,” one of the executive members said.

“He must have a weakness or something. People like him always have a weakness that destroys them,” a woman suggested. “Let's watch him closely. Get some spies or something.”

“That's a good idea,” Holden said, nodding slowly.

Charles slumped on the sofa as soon as he got back to the house he was now staying in with Sadie.

Even his training days in the military didn't make him as tired as this.

“I made some steak, you want some?” He heard Sadie's voice.

When was the last time someone made a meal for him? He got up and went to the dining room.

“Wash up first, will you?” Sadie said across the table.

“That's my business.” He grabbed the knife and fork. He was about to put a piece in his mouth when he stopped.

“What? Why are you staring at me like that?” Sadie asked.

“What if you poisoned this food?”

She rolled her eyes and continued eating.

“It's plausible. I'm the only one other than your mother and personal assistant who knows about your secret,” Charles said.

“If I wanted you dead, I'd have done it overnight.” She munched on the steak. “Besides, you are supposed to be my bodyguard. In case I try to leave the house in my sleep, you'll prevent that.”

“No way.”

“It was in the contract you signed. Didn't you check it before signing?”

“Don't you think it's fraud? All these for just ten million dollars.” Charles ate a piece.

“I gave you a blank cheque, that was what you filled.”

Charles was about to say something when her phone rang. She answered it. “Okay.” She dropped the phone and stood up.

She came back some minutes later with a big shopping bag. She dropped it on the chair beside him. “Change into that, we have to go somewhere.”

“I'm not interested.”

“In the contract, you have to go anywhere I go as long as it's past 8 pm.”

“That…” shit. What has he gotten himself into? Maybe it wouldn't have been that much of a bad idea to admit to his godfather that he didn't love anyone.

Charles stepped out of the car, his eyes sweeping across the quiet street. His gaze settled on the entrance of the hall where the dinner party was already in full swing. Small, yes—but it housed the powerhouses of the city.Sadie had asked him to come in with her, but he’d turned her down without a second thought.“I hate boredom,” he’d said. But really, that wasn’t it. Walking in there with her would be signing his own exposure slip. One look from the right person—someone with a long enough memory—and the game would be up, all his identity revealed. Add that to the fingerprint registration at the door?Too much fuss for a damn dinner.Charles pulled out a cigarette from the packet and flicked his lighter open. Just as the flame flared, he felt someone behind him. A presence he didn’t need to look at to recognize.“I’ve seen foolish people,” Roger said from beside him, “but you beat the record, man.”Charles slowly lowered the lighter and took the cigarette out of his mouth. What the

Charles chuckled. He patted the man on the shoulder. Lainey's boyfriend. “Get up, get up.” “No, sir,” the man said. He could still feel the pain he got from Charles two days ago. His men that tried to deal with Charles were still in the hospital without hope of recovery. He wasn't ready for another attack again. Plus, his doctor warned him not to do anything with his arm for now if didn't want to lose it. “How are your boys? I didn't mean to go hard on them the other time,” Charles said. “They're fine, sir,” he quickly replied. “I said you should deal with him!” Dakota snapped. “Ma'am, we will stop working with you from today, if you dare to mess with our boss then we are not working with you,” Lainey's boyfriend said. Charles smiled. “I haven't agreed to be your boss.” He turned to Dakota, “will you now tell me who you are?” “Mr Charles?” A man called. He came forward and bowed slightly. “I was waiting for you at the gate, I had no idea you had arrived, sir.” Dakota frowned.

Charles looked at his reflection in the mirror as he drove the Toyota Camry Sadie bought for him. They almost had a fight over it. She was going to buy him a Rolls-Royce but what the fuck was he supposed to do with it? Even without using some extraordinary cars, a few important people in Atlanta recognize him. What'd happen if he now used an expensive car? And he'll admit, he'd never been more pissed off than he had been since he met Sadie. She would always do something to get on his nerves. Like this morning… “You have to start working here,” she had tossed a card on the table. “No, thanks.” “One way or the other, I'm going to be forced to tell people that you are my husband, what will I tell them you do for a living?” And that way, she forced him to get out of bed and now here he is, driving to start working as a CEO in some company he is not interested in. He pulled into the gate of the company. He parked in the garage and came out of the car. Just to piss her off in

“Later,” Charles quickly said. “Alright. I'll call you later.” Charles let out a breath of relief after ending the call. For now, he was covered. But really, he'd never understand why his godfather wanted him to have a kid. He was not even ready to be a father. The thought of it scared the shit out of him. “Sir?” A man in a suit bowed in front of Charles. “Miss Sadie said to tell you that the car is waiting over there.” He pointed at a tinted black BMW. Charles strode to the car. Time to know what the woman wanted from him. She seemed too sensible for the way she was behaving last night. He entered the car and the driver soon started driving. “Thanks to you I had to sign seventy autographs on my feet.” She drank from a bottle of water. “I wasn't the one who asked you to follow me all around.” She darted a glare at him. “So, what do you want from me? I'm more busy than this.” She accessed him. “What do you do for a living?” “Is that any of your business?”“Compared to the w

He pushed through the crowd until he made it to the front.Roger was on one knee, right there in front of Emmy.“Will you be my date?” Roger asked.Emmy blushed. Beaming, she stretched out her hand, and Roger slipped the ring onto her finger.“He’s so romantic!”“I wish I was Emmy.”“They’re so cute!”“When will someone propose to me like that?”Just before Charles could reach the gate and leave it all behind, he saw it. The kiss. Emmy clung to Roger like her life depended on it, like she had something to prove. While they were married, Emmy barely let Charles touch her. A hug—only when her father was around. And even then, it felt like a favor. He respected that. Gave her space. Thought maybe, just maybe, she’d open up someday.Turns out, none of it ever meant anything.“Hey,” he heard a woman's shout. The voice was familiar to the voice of the woman he met last night. He continued walking. “Man in black jacket and earring,” the woman shouted again. He still didn't stop. He had

“Does that mean I can have her?” Charles further twisted Lainey's boyfriend's hand. If he twisted it a inch further, the man would end up with a broken arm. “You can! You can!” Charles let it go. “Thanks.” He walked back to Lainey like nothing just happened. He held out his hand to her. “Shall we go on our first date?” Still not believing all that was happening, Lainey reached out her hand to Charles. For the first time in her life, she was seeing someone who could deal with her boyfriend without making an effort. As they left, Lainey's boyfriend swore under his breath to deal with Charles at all costs. Outside, Charles smiled at the woman. He wanted to continue flirting with her but seeing no need for that, he shut his mouth. He wasn't ready to get into any relationship and he didn't plan to in the future.“Thank you so much, sir,” Lainey's father said, getting out of the car. Lainey snapped her head toward the voice. “Dad?” Her father looked at her with a sigh. “If you don'

—---At the Daryl's restaurant---Charles can't believe he agreed to this ridiculous thing. He is putting on a brand designed cloth that is worth millions of dollars and chewing gum like a total playboy. His job was simple—at least that was what the owner of the Tyrell Williams group said. The man had a daughter but the daughter had been going on a date with a very ruthless man of the underworld whose only mission was to bring the family business down. Now where did he fit in the drama? He just had to flirt with the man's daughter and rescue the clueless daughter from the ruthless man. Any man could have played this part but according to the owner of the Tyrell Williams group, the other men who had tried it in the past few months disappeared all of a sudden. As Charles entered the restaurant, he switched his walking step to one with some swag. Not difficult, really. He was a playboy before he got married to Emmy. He chewed recklessly on the bubble gum in his mouth as he approache

Charles laughed, bitter and low. "Business partner? That's what you're calling it now?”“Wasn't it a business meeting? Didn’t you see the laptop and documents when you came in?” Emmy fired, eyes flashing with anger at Charles’s shocked expression.“Mom, you should’ve seen how Charles embarrassed me last night,” she continued, voice dripping with bitterness. “Mr. Roger stormed out in anger. It was humiliating, hearing that he had… other intentions. You know Mr. Roger, right? Mom?”“How could you?” Charles’s mother-in-law shouted, fists clenched. “After everything my daughter has sacrificed for you, this is how you repay her? I won’t let this slide. You will pay for this.”“I managed to apologize to Mr. Roger yesterday,” Emmy said, her voice now low and defeated, “but I’m not sure he’ll want to continue the partnership.”Roger couldn’t help but smile quietly. This was turning out to be more entertaining than he expected. “I’ll start the divorce papers and have them ready before the day
