____Harrington Family Villa ____

Sadie looked around the sitting room, taking in every face. Emmy wasn’t there, but Roger was. Emmy’s parents were there too, along with probably some of Emmy's other relatives she had never met before.

Which meant she had no business here. She didn't come for this. She was about to bust out her anger when Roger motioned at her to be calm.

“We apologize for the sudden call, Miss Sadie,” Roger started smoothly, “but I believe this meeting is worth your time.”

She couldn't hold back anymore, “How many times have I told you not to do this, Roger?” she snapped. “I thought I made it clear we aren’t close enough for these kinds of things.”

“But you still came,” Roger said, smiling faintly.

Of course, none of the family members knew how he lured Sadie here — he simply told them he’d ‘figure out a way’ to get her to show up.

“Where is Charles?” Sadie asked sharply.

“That’s not as impor

Charles stayed beside Sadie's bed all through the night. She didn’t exactly sleep, and she didn’t exactly stay awake—her body just existed somewhere in between, drenched in sweat. Lowering the temperature of the room to what would’ve been considered alarming didn’t help. Not a bit.To avoid looking like some creepy vigilante, he resisted the urge to call his men and track the path Sadie and Davis had taken the night before. But as soon as day broke enough to see, he bolted out, sprinting to the nearest pharmacy for pain relievers. The shop was open. Perfect. Charles grabbed the exact pack he needed and went to pay.“Sorry, your card was declined,” the cashier said, staring at him like he was a fraud in a thriller movie.“You can try again,” Charles said calmly, though his patience was thinning.“Try what again?” she snapped.“The card,” he repeated, keeping his voice neutral. “Try it again.”“Are you stupid?” she shot back.Charles blinked. He looked around. Two people in the shop. He

“Don’t worry about Sadie if she’s really with Davis,” Thomas groaned, eyes on the clock.Charles’ gaze flicked up.“They met during her PhD days. He’s actually the first guy Sadie felt safe with. First time I heard her talking about parties and being chill with it too,” Thomas added.Charles shrugged.“Plus, Davis is loaded, fleet of security at his beck and call. His father runs one crazy school in London, so…he’s not just some random guy,” Thomas said.“She should be back by now. Not even answering her phone,” Hailey muttered, brow furrowed.“I see why she always says she regrets having you as a kid sister,” Thomas groaned. “Basically, I told you she’s safe with Davis.”“This is past two a.m.,” Avery said quietly. “I don’t think she’ll be out this late without her phone.”“Oh my goodness, what is up with you all?” Thomas groaned, shuffling from the table. “I…” He let out a reluctant sigh.“I swear I didn’t plan to say this, but Sadie once told me Davis confessed to her. I mean…” He

Davis glanced at his phone again. Eight o’clock already. No progress. Sadie was safe—for now—but all he’d done so far was dodge every overzealous fan Sadie seemed to attract like moths to fire.“I think we should just go to my place at this rate,” Sadie muttered, her voice muffled by exhaustion.“No. Just a few more seconds. I promise everyone will leave soon,” he said, eyes flicking toward the club entrance. Once she was inside, he’d be done. Or maybe not.“How do you know? You haven’t been in New York that long.”Well…he hadn’t left in the first place. The airport story, the flight, all bullshit. “I have connections,” he lied again, shrugging. The only connection he had was the security guard who dragged his drunk ass out of this place every other night.“You haven’t changed much, really,” Sadie yawned.Sleep, bitch, make things easier, Davis thought bitterly.By now, it was ten past eight. He offered, “Should I get you something cold? Anything to sip while we wait?”“You’re so swee

Charles didn’t answer.“I don’t know if it’s my head playing tricks, but I feel like you underestimate me. Hey—why wouldn’t you?” she said with a sly grin. “The fact we were once married doesn’t mean you know me, Charles.”“And that’s why you brought Hailey here? To spin fairy tales in her ear?”“Oh, you think they’re fairy tales?” Emmy’s smile sharpened. “Then let’s wait and see the result.”“I made it clear I’m done with you,” Charles said, voice flat.Emmy tilted her head, lips curling. “You’re free, Charles. For real. You don’t ever have to see me again if that’s what you want. But what you did to Roger today? You’ll be paying for it the rest of your life.”“Oh, this is about your boyfriend?” Charles chuckled but there was no humor in his time. “I should’ve guessed.”Her smile cracked. Emmy’s face darkened. “Mark this day, Charles. Mark it anywhere.” She spun on her heel and strode back inside, her voice trailing. “Haileyyy…”Charles shoved his hands into his pockets, jaw tighteni

“Is that your girlfriend on the phone?” Sadie asked in a whisper. Davis gave her a lopsided grin, his voice also a whisper. “My mom. Obsessive as always.” He lowered his voice, as if confessing a great secret. “She calls like the FBI has me on surveillance.”He tilted the phone toward her ear. “Mom, Sadie’s saying hello.”Sadie immediately waved both hands. No way she was signing up for small talk with that woman and maybe get her hopes up. She wasn't ready to have anything special with Davis. “Love you, mom,” Davis said with mock sincerity before tapping his screen — the call had ended five minutes ago, but why ruin the performance? He looked back at Sadie, eyes glinting with mischief. “Now, I think we might have to fix your clothes first. Your taste in fashion is screaming for a paramedic.”If pawning her off was all it took to wipe away his debts, maybe that wasn’t such a terrible plan. The thought slid in like a cruel joke — one he almost laughed at, except the joke was on him.

He slammed the brakes, wrenching the wheel like the car owed him money. The tires screamed, the whole beast of metal lurched, and finally it skidded nose-first into the covert, coming to a brutal stop. Two seconds. Three.Silence.No scream. No thud. Which meant the woman was still alive—or worse, playing games.Charles shoved the door open. He sprinted toward where she’d been. Nothing. Just empty asphalt and shadows. He turned in circles, scanning every corner. Nothing.“What the hell…?” His mind wasn’t the kind to play tricks. That was when his phone beeped.Emmy.Of course. Who else?Charles almost laughed. Was she drunk? Deranged? Or just stupid enough to think he’d forgotten the part where he told her to never call him again? Did she think she could reel him back in with another sad little sob story? He hung up.But her number flashed again. This time he went for
