Freecs grabbed the edge of Vivina’s silk-lined tunic, his fingers digging into the fabric with a desperate, crushing force. The damp air around them hummed with an unnatural, sickly vibration that rattled the fillings in his teeth and made his skin prickle.

“Drop it, Vivina!” Freecs barked, his voice cutting through the ringing in his ears like a rusted saw blade. “Drop the golden aura right now, or we are both going to become permanent fixtures of this drainage junction!”

Vivina staggered back

The impact with the water felt less like a landing and more like a physical collision with a stone wall. Freecs’s shoulder hit the freezing brine first, the ferocious jolt sending a shooting spike of agonizing pain straight up into his neck. Frigid seawater flooded his mouth and nose instantly, burning his throat as he forced himself not to inhale the suffocating liquid. The sheer velocity of their fall dragged them deep beneath the churning surface, plunging them into a heavy, lightless world of violence and pressure.Currents grabbed their bodies like invisible, angry hands, twisting them helplessly through the dark water. The undertow was an absolute monster, pulling them away from the jagged safety of the cliffside foundations and toward the open sea. Freecs kicked his legs wildly, fighting against the suffocating drag with every remaining ounce of his exhausted strength. He refused to let the ocean swallow them here, not after everything they had sacrificed to reach the truth.Be

The churning, black ocean reared up like a monstrous, liquid wall against the jagged stone foundations of the governor’s cliffside estate. Freecs felt the breath stolen directly from his lungs the instant gravity swallowed them whole from the upper terrace. The drop felt infinitely longer than it actually was, a breathless eternity spent suspended between the glittering lights of the corrupt aristocracy and the yawning, fathomless abyss of the sea.Freecs twisted his torso mid-air, wrapping his arm tightly around Vivina’s waist to shield her body from the worst of the impact. The freezing night air shrieked past his ears, carrying the sharp, metallic tang of ozone and salt spray. The surface of the ocean rushed upward with terrifying speed, losing its liquid appearance entirely as it loomed closer. It looked as solid and unyielding as a slab of gray concrete, waiting to shatter every bone in their bodies upon contact.Freecs braced his muscles, gritting his teeth so hard a dull ache f

The heavy wooden door of the scullery burst open with a resounding bang, slamming violently against the whitewashed brick wall. Vivina spun around, the heavy leather-bound ledger clutched tightly against her chest like a shield. She blinked rapidly against the sudden influx of bright, flickering torchlight and thick, greasy cooking smoke. Cooks and kitchen hands scattered like startled sparrows, dropping iron pots and wooden ladles onto the flagstone floor.Freecs barreled through the doorway a split second later, his breathing ragged and his borrowed coat torn at the shoulder. He slammed the heavy oak service door shut behind him, dropping a massive iron locking bar into place.Outside, the muffled shouts of armed inquisitors hammered against the solid timber. Heavy iron-shod boots stomped furiously against the exterior steps, demanding entry into the kitchens."They’re right behind us!" Freecs gasped, scanning the chaotic, steaming expanse of the scullery."I have the ledger," Vivin

The silver tray slipped from Freecs’s fingers, clattering loudly against the polished marble floor. Crystal shards exploded in every direction, sending expensive champagne splashing across the silk shoes of nearby courtiers.Panic rippled through the ballroom like wind across a dry field. High-born ladies shrieked, clutching their diamond necklaces and scattering away from the sudden violence. The magistrate lunged forward, drawing a slender dueling sword from a velvet-lined scabbard. The blade caught the candlelight, flashing a dangerous, blinding silver as it cleaved the air toward Freecs’s chest.Freecs twisted his body at the last possible microsecond, letting the razor-sharp point slice harmlessly through his borrowed woolen coat. He drove his elbow backward with calculated, brutal force, catching the magistrate squarely in the ribs.A sharp cracking sound echoed over the music, followed immediately by the magistrate’s gasping, winded wheeze. The man dropped to his knees, clutchi

The heavy mahogany doors of the grand ballroom swung open with a muffled creak, admitting a sudden draft of cold sea air. Freecs did not turn around immediately, keeping his posture relaxed as he balanced a crystal flute of sparkling wine on his palm.He had spent the last hour working his way through the glittering sea of aristocracy, playing the role of a minor provincial trade envoy. Every smile he offered felt like chewing on broken glass, but his disguise had held up against the casual glances of bored nobles.Across the sprawling, marble-floored room, a sharp, metallic voice suddenly pierced the air. It was a sound that did not belong amid the polite clinking of silverware and the gentle strains of the string quartet."You there! Halt!" shouted a high-pitched magistrate whose face had gone completely pale.Freecs froze, his eyes narrowing as he caught the reflection of the speaker in a polished silver tray held by a passing footman. The man was pointing a trembling, jeweled fing

The cool brass of the lock mechanism resisted her touch with a stubborn, mechanical authority. Vivina closed her eyes for a single heartbeat, shutting out the oppressive gloom of the second-floor corridor. She remembered Freecs’s rough, calloused hands guiding hers through the dark alleyways of Oakhaven. He had taught her how to listen to the soul of a machine, to read its hidden language through vibrations rather than sight. Her breath slowed as she applied a precise, delicate lateral pressure with the sliver of clock spring. Inside the heavy iron housing, a tiny tumbler lifted with a muffled, satisfying click.A second tumbler fell into place a moment later, followed by a soft metallic sigh that whispered through the dead air of the hallway. The complex mechanical barrier finally yielded, parting its internal gates to her patient persistence.Vivina let out a long, quiet breath that she hadn’t realized she was holding. She carefully withdrew the hairpin tools and pocketed them withi
