"We need to split up. Again."

They were back in the van, driving through streets that were starting to show signs of panic. News vans racing toward the subway station. Police cars everywhere. Sirens creating a constant wail.

"Split up how?" Daniel asked. "We barely have six people left! Sarah, Jason, April, Leonard, you, and me! That's not an army!"

"Then we fight like a scalpel, not a hammer. Precise strikes." Jayce was already planning. "Leonard, April—you go to Walker Global headquarters. Start moving the servers. Get them off-site before Victoria blows the building. Daniel, Jason—you go to the subway station. Help evacuate. Try to contain the spread. I go to the nursing home. Face Victoria. End this."

"Alone?" Sarah shook her head. "That's suicide."

"Then come with me. You know the layout. You know where they'd keep the prisoners." Jayce looked at her. "Prove you're really on our side. Help me rescue the real Ella and Master Chen."

"And what about the bioweapon?" April demanded. "

"Grandmother. Or should I say, genetic abomination? I've been looking for this for years. The original shutdown command. Not a kill switch for your clones. A shutdown code for you. For your AI components." Lily held up the syringe. "One injection and your human-AI integration fails. You become fully human again. Mortal again. Killable again.""Lily. My dear Lily. You wouldn't dare." Margaret's voice was calm but her eyes showed concern. "I'm your family.""You're nobody's family. You're a machine wearing a human face. And I'm done pretending you're anything else." Lily walked forward. "Everyone get behind me. This is going to get ugly."Margaret lunged at Lily with superhuman speed. But Lily was ready. She sidestepped and jammed the syringe into Margaret's neck, injecting the entire contents.Margaret screamed. Not a human scream. A digital sound. Like computers crashing. Like systems failing. She fell to her knees, clawing at her neck. "What did you do? WHAT DID YOU DO?""I gave you

They spun to see Margaret Walker standing in a doorway they hadn't noticed. She held a device in her hand. Small. Metallic. With a red button on top."The kill switch," Victor breathed. "You found it already.""Of course I did. I've known where it was for seventy years. I was just waiting to see if you'd figure it out." Margaret smiled. "Congratulations. You passed the test. You're smarter than I expected.""Then why let us come here? Why let us find the laboratory?" Jayce demanded."Because I wanted you to see where I was born. Wanted you to understand what I am. What I've always been." Margaret pressed the button.Nothing happened."Surprised? The kill switch doesn't kill me. It kills everyone connected to me. Every clone I've created. Every person I've uploaded my consciousness into. Every vessel I've prepared." She threw the device to Jayce. "Go ahead. Press it. Activate the kill switch. See what happens."Jayce caught it. Looked at the button. "You're bluffing. You wouldn't give

"We need everyone on this. No exceptions."Morning came with Leonard organizing the safe house like a military command center. Screens everywhere showing data. Research files spread across every surface. The freed clones were given tasks—filing, organizing, cataloging. Everyone who could work was working."This is everything?" Victor asked, looking at the assembled research. "All of Richard Walker's life's work?""Everything we could save. Some was lost in the headquarters explosion. But most survived." Leonard pulled up digital files. "Problem is, it's massive. Forty years of research. Tens of thousands of pages. Finding the hidden clues about Margaret's kill switch could take months.""We have two days," Jayce reminded him. "Start with anything labeled 'Project Genesis.' That's what my grandfather called the original AI-human hybrid experiment."They worked in shifts. Twelve hours on, twelve hours off. Victor coordinating the search. Sarah helping translate old technical documents.

When it cleared, the building was gone. Just rubble. And somewhere in that rubble was Victoria Walker. Dead or alive, they didn't know."Count off!" Leonard called out. "Everyone sound off! Let me know you're alive!"One by one, people called out their names. Jayce's team. Sarah. Victor. The freed clones. They'd lost three people in the collapse. Three of Leonard's security team who'd been doing final sweeps. But they'd saved dozens. Freed the clones. Rescued a child."We did good today," Ella said softly. "Despite everything, we did good.""It's not over," Victor said grimly. "Margaret is still out there. Still immortal. Still planning.""Then we hunt her," Jayce said through gritted teeth. "But first, someone get me a medic. I think I broke several things."Sirens approached. Police. Fire trucks. Ambulances. The authorities finally responding to the chaos."We need to leave," Leonard said. "Before they start asking questions we can't answer.""Take the clones," Victor ordered. "All

"They're clones! They're not real!" One of Leonard's people argued."They're alive! They think and feel and dream! We can't just leave them!" Victor was typing frantically. "I can trigger mass awakening! Release them all from their tubes! Give them a chance to escape!""That's dozens of clones! They could be dangerous! They could be programmed to kill us!" Daniel protested."Or they could be innocent people who never asked to be created! We give them a chance! That's what makes us better than The Collector!" Victor hit the final key. "There! Mass awakening initiated! All tubes releasing!"Throughout the building, they heard glass shattering. Fluid rushing. Voices—confused, scared voices—calling out."What's happening? Where am I? Who am I?"The clones were waking up."We need to guide them out!" Ella started toward the stairs. "They'll panic! Run the wrong way! Get trapped!""I'll do it!" Sarah volunteered. "I know the building layout! I can lead them to safety!""Take backup!" Jayce

"She's not responding!"Jayce pounded on the glass of Ella's tube. Inside, she floated in the blue fluid, eyes closed, not moving."Get her out! NOW!" Jayce screamed at Victor."I'm trying!" The old master worked the controls frantically. "The tube's locked from the inside! Emergency protocol! She must have triggered it when you sealed her in!""Why would she do that?""To protect you! The bioweapon was about to release! She sealed herself in completely to make sure the tube would be airtight!" Victor kept typing. "But now I can't override it! The system thinks she's in danger and won't let anyone in or out!""How long does she have in there?""The fluid provides oxygen. Maybe an hour. Maybe less if she panics." Victor's hands were shaking. "I need access to the main computer. The one that controls all the tubes. But Margaret destroyed it before she left.""Then we rebuild it!" Sarah pulled out tools from the facility's storage. "Victor, you designed these systems originally. You know
