Mr Jones didn’t arrive back that day. Or the day after. This made him mad.
He did all that washing for nothing?!His next target was Caro. Caro spent her time shopping and cleaning the figurines on all the floors. It was rare to find her. Steven tried to get access to her, but it was close to impossible. They’ve barely seen each other twice.“Could you link me with Caro?” He asked Anita. Anita was surprised.“Excuse me?”“I think I misplaced a figurine on the first floor. I need your help.”Anita couldn’t believe it.“How could you? Mr Jones will kill you.”“That’s why I need your help.”“Tell me what figurine, and I will figure it out for you.” Anita was being nice.“I will prefer Caro to help me instead.”Her smile disappeared. She was deeply hurt as if he said something bad. She nodded and opened her phone book. She shut her eyes and finally spoke up.“Did I do anything wrong?”“What do you mean?”“Since that day, you have been avoiding me….” She was close to tears.“What day?”“That day.”“I do not know what day. Remind me of the day.”“Forget it!” She got irritated and dialed Caro. Steven smiled. She does look cute when she’s angry. He sighed.“I am sorry,” he apologized. She turned to him. “You are just not my type.”“You aren’t either,” she answered coldly. His ego was hurt. “Why do you think I scold you all the time? I hate everything about you.”Steven wasn’t sure why that hurt. It hit him deeply. More deeply than he thought. Her words caused him anger and he clenched his fist. What was wrong with him?He was becoming like his father again.Anita ended the call and turned to him“She will be back in the evening. I will send her to you when I see her.”With these words, she continued her chores. She thought he wasn’t her spec huh?! She thought that?! He will show her!He walked away defeated. He couldn’t focus on her. His plans were more important to him.“I will deal with you later”, he thought.Caro was easier to speak to than he thought. She asked about the figurine.“I found it,” he confessed, staring into her blue eyes.“O!” She was surprised. “I do not see you around. When did you join?”“It’s less than a month. I work under Anita, until Mr Jones needs me.”She smiled.“Anita is a nice boss. We all work under her.”Steven stared into her eyes and walked closer to her. She blushed and turned away.“What do you think you’re doing?”“My eyes can’t get off you. I want to know more about you.”She stared into his eyes for a while and ran her finger down his chest.“My room is opposite Diana’s. 10pm tonight.”Diana’s room. No way!“Could you come to mine instead?”“Why? You’re hiding from someone?”Damn! She was smart.“My room will be more comfortable,” he insisted.“It will be better if you come to mine. Definitely not coming upstairs to see you.”“Fine! I will!” He gave in. “Dress to kill.”She giggled.“I will try.”***Steven looked out the window as he waited for 10pm. His mind couldn’t forget the recent events. He was becoming his worst nightmare. He did all he hated just to achieve one aim. To access his father. To shoot that old man in the head. This was unlike him. This was the Steven Mary didn’t know. Tears rolled down his eyes. He felt guilt.“I am doing this to avenge you! I promise,” he looked at the sky. “I do not want to do this, but I have to. I promise I am not terrible. I didn’t drag Anita into this. You saw that, right? I didn’t take advantage of her. That’s what dad would have done, right? I am not that bad, I promise.”He wasn’t sure if his sister heard him or not. She would dance if he wore a suit. But he doesn’t have a suit yet. He hasn’t even gotten an office job either. He cleared his tears and sighed.“What has my life gotten into?”He almost forgot about his meetup with Caro. If not for his phone which beeped, he would have never known. Thanks to the gift Mr Jones gifted him!He gaggled some mouthwash and smelled his breath to be sure it was minty. A smile came on his lips. He admired himself one last time and hurried down to the servant’s lounge. Mr Jones must have been partial with room offering. The other servants got the servant lounge and he had a furnished room upstairs. No! No! he wasn’t complaining. Saving someone’s life is no piece of cake! The house was silent, making his steps audible. He snuck into the dimly lit hallway and searched for Caro’s door.“What are you doing?” He heard a voice stop him. His heart skipped a beat. He turned around and saw Anita, clung to her night robe.“I…I…,” he wasn’t sure of what to say.“You came to see Caro.”She wasn’t dumb.“It’s not like that….”“Good luck then. I am not stopping you.”She pointed to Caro’s door.He thanked her and walked towards it.“I know you are up to something, Steven,” She said. “The others might fall for your charms and sleep with you, but I am not that stupid. I will get to the bottom of this.”Anita threatened with an intimidating look. Steven was surprised at her confidence.“Anita, what did I do this time?”“My eyes are on you.”She walked away. “I will deal with her later,” he said to himself and knocked on Caro’s door.Caro opened the door almost immediately. He was shocked by the flower petals on the bed and her candle decorations on her dressing table. Her room smelled like jasmine and her outfit was transparent lingerie. Steven smiled and followed her like a puppy. She laid him on his back and got on top of him.“Have you worked at a brothel before?” He asked, feeling sweaty.“Yeah, so?”She took the words off his mouth. Her skills were immaculate. He got enticed by her touches and focused on the sex. By the time they were done, Caro slept off.“Stupid!” He banged his head with annoyance. “Very stupid!”The next morning, he was awoken by the smell of coffee.“How do you like it?” She asked, opening a bottle of milk. “With milk or without?”“With milk, thanks.”She added some milk to the coffee, stirred it and gave it to him.“I almost killed you last night. I am sorry.” She apologized.“It’s fine,”She eyed him seductively. The temptation again! He couldn’t be distracted this time!“I heard you clean the basement.”She agreed.“Sure, that’s where Mr Jones does his meeting. He gives me creepy vibes, no doubt.”Steven got inquisitive.“Do outsiders go in too?”“It depends,” Caro shrugged. “Sometimes, he invites outsiders. But most times, he doesn’t.”“How often do meetings take place there?”“Once or twice a month. It depends.”There was silence.“But there is something you should know.”“Yeah?” He sipped his coffee.“Anita is the only one that has access to the basement. She knows more things than most of us do. Infact, Mr Jones keeps his important keys with her. She is the leader, remember?”“What?!” Steven was shocked.“Yeah. Is it a big deal?” Caro didn’t see the need to worry. “She is a nice lady. She will help you.”He ran his hand down his hair. She definitely won’t help him.How can he get the key from her? What will he do now?

Familiar Faces
Vicky didn’t hang up her call with Maria. She left it active, hoping to feel Maria’s presence with her as she receives his diagnosis.“Girl, relax okay?” She heard Maria say over the phone. Vicky took a deep breath, trying to be calm.“What is it doctor?” She eventually asked. “He is stable now,” Vicky heaved a sigh of relief with her hand to her chest. She sat back on the chair, thanking God for saving his life. “We were able to flush the pill out of his system. There is an issue though…,” the doctor said. She stopped rejoicing and turned swiftly to him. “He may be unconscious for a couple of hours. The pill really messed with his brain, so it will take a while for his body to get back to normal.”“At least he is fine, that’s all that matters to me.” She said, ignoring the rest of the doctor’s facts. “If I may ask, are you his wife? We need a family member to sign some documents later,” he asked. She felt off by the question. Maria cleared her throat, causing her to feel a bit pi
Deeper than you think
Vicky laid on her back that night, staring at the ceiling. She couldn’t stop thinking about Steven’s indifference towards her rants that evening. He seemed chill, happier and friendlier than she ever knew him. She turned to her side and gazed at a beautiful painting of an enormous garden. A painting she barely notices since she’s been so busy with Bonnie. Perhaps all Steven needed was a friend and someone to speak to, she thought. He might be lonely and in need of some to converse with. But his freaking ego would not let him admit him. Well, it wasn’t her own headache. She came for Bonnie and that was it. The next day, she made herself a cup of green tea in the kitchen, before stepping outside admiring the greenery. The emergency lock down was over. Good thing she could visit Maria and forget these depressing lives for a while. Her thought went to her husband as she stepped back into the house to get her bag. She hadn’t heard from him since their last argument. Well, she hoped he wa
His Loneliness
Vicky nodded and began. “She was helpless when I first saw her,” Vicky said with an emotional tone. “I remember when Mr Chang brought her for the first time. She was scared, vulnerable and felt sick. We all thought she was going to die. It turned out she had been roaming the streets for hours and had nowhere to go. She was three months pregnant at that time. The landlord promised to give her a free apartment for a while, and made her vow to start paying once she gets a job. Anita made that promise. She was very beautiful, Steven. Not only was she beautiful, she was the most hardworking lady I have ever seen too. She was so fond of her daughter and I remember her smiles anytime Bonnie kicked in her stomach. She became my best friend the first time I saw her.” Steven felt deeply hurt by Vicky’s words. He wasn’t there for Bonnie when she needed him the most. He couldn’t believe she suffered so much like that. “She is an amazing lady. You fell in love with your match, Steven,” Vicky co
Anita
Anita walked down the empty road, nervous and scared. She had nowhere else to go and she’d considered her employment at Mr Jones house lucky. How wrong she was! If only she hadn’t placed all her eggs in one basket. Perhaps, she would have found an alternative place to lay for the night. Her arm was wrapped around her. She trembled with fear and she could barely walk any further. Luckily for her, a car pulled over beside her and her guardian came to her rescue. It was Mr Chang. An old man she helped a few weeks ago while he was stranded under the rain. “What are you doing here all alone?” He asked with concern. She had tears rolling down her cheeks. He opened his car for her to get in and she hesitated at first. “Trust me,” he smiled.Since there was no other choice, she got in and cleared the tears on her cheek. “Thank you,” she appreciated. “What are you doing stranded her?” He asked “My boss' daughter wants to kill me,” she confessed. “I have nowhere to go.” Mr Chang didn’t
The Lockdown
Bonnie wasn’t confident about going with Mrs Gold. As Vicky packed her necessities into her baby bag, the child gazed at her with nervous anticipation. “O! Bonnie! It is just for a few days,” Vicky shut the bag, brushing away her analysis. Bonnie was just a year and half old. The child was too young to know what was right and wrong. Vicky hung the bag on her shoulder and carried Bonnie in her arm. “Come on, my princess! You will be back before you know it.”She gave Bonnie to Mrs Gold and handed her the bag. “All her items are in there. She loves to have her milk oat and she takes her baby food at 8pm every night. She doesn’t like cold showers and she enjoys a solemn lullaby before sleep. She hates the air conditioner and does enjoy loud noises. She loves to move around in Walker when she is awake and…,” “It’s fine, Vicky,” Mrs Gold interrupted her with a short laugh. “I have taken care of her a couple of times, so I know all this. There is no need to teach me how to take care of my
The Proposal
Vicky watched the girls enter the police van as they were taken for interrogation. She smiled with pride as she reminisced about what she had done. She got Tory to speak! O! Goodness! Who would have thought.“You did good,” Steven said as he joined her where she stood. She smiled with a relieved look. “I have never done this before,” she confessed, folding her arms. “I was really nervous. I thought I was going to upset them.”“Luckily you did not,” he said with his eyes focused on the van. “If you had, you would have faced me. You know how that ends, don’t you?”He was such a mood killer. Was that a nice time to threaten her? Vicky rolled her eyes, ignoring what he said. He didn’t want her response anyway. “You should have more faith in yourself, Vicky,” he continued. “If you do, you can go really far.”“I have faith in myself. You needn’t teach me that. It is just difficult to deal with a man like you. I cannot satisfy you no matter what I do. You scare me most of the time,” Vicky
