Sophie’s voice cracked as she whispered, “That much, Doctor?”

Trevor dragged a hand through his hair, pacing again. “It's bad. It’s really bad.”

Daniel observed their reaction. He knew the Carringtons had the money—enough to save Margret if they wanted to. He also knew the price of that decision. A hundred million wasn’t a number they could casually toss out. It would strip their business to its bones, turn them from powerhouses into beggars overnight. For a family like theirs, reputation could be deadlier than bankruptcy.

Sophie shook her head slowly as tears welled in her eyes. “A hundred million? How… how are we supposed to get that kind of money?”

Her breaths came out shaky and desperate, almost painful, as if saying the amount alone stole air from her lungs.

Trevor’s voice broke. “If we send it, do you assure us that you can give our mother the best treatment? That she… that she’ll survive this?”

His voice wasn’t angry. It was pleading—almost childlike. For a moment, Daniel saw not an heir of a corporate dynasty, nor the wicked bully Trevor who is fond of bullying him, but a son terrified of losing his own mother.

Daniel inhaled deeply before answering.

“No doctor can guarantee life, Trevor,” he said quietly, choosing his words. “But I can guarantee this—without the treatment, she won’t make it through the next month.”

Sophie pressed a trembling hand over her mouth and began to wail in sorrow. Trevor moved closer to her to support her. For once, he didn’t bark orders, didn’t posture like the future head of the family. He held his sister like a scared boy clinging to the last familiar piece of his world.

Daniel looked away, giving them a moment, though the sound of Sophie’s sobs hurt him greatly. He wasn’t close to Margret, yet he felt so much pity for her. No one deserved a fate like that, absolutely no one, he thought to himself.

Trevor was shivering, his voice came out hoarse. “Where do we… make the payment?” he asked, tears running down his face.

The doctor cleared his throat softly and gestured toward the reception. “The finance office will handle the deposit. Once processed, we’ll begin immediate surgery.”

Trevor nodded stiffly. He gently handed Sophie over to a nurse who had stepped forward, then wiped his eyes roughly with the back of his hand, pretending he wasn’t falling apart, before walking out of the room.

Daniel followed him out of the room, his steps uneasy. He wasn’t sure if he should speak; Trevor hated him on a normal day. Offering comfort now felt like inviting another attack, but he couldn’t just walk away.

“Trevor…” Daniel murmured softly, “I’m sorry. I know this isn’t easy,” he said, trying to console him.

Trevor looked around sharply; his eyes landed on Daniel and he felt a surge of anger flow through him. “Don’t you dare pity me, you useless person. I definitely don't need the sympathy of a broke person like you.”

“That’s not what I—”

“Save it,” Trevor snapped. “Just do your job and stay out of our business. I don’t need your sympathy.”

Daniel lowered his gaze and swallowed his irritation. The situation wasn’t about him. He forced his voice steadier. “I didn’t mean anything disrespectful. I just—”

Trevor cut him off again as he walked toward the finance counter. “Just shut up.”

As soon as he got to the finance counter, he pulled out his platinum card ready to swipe away the future of his family. But before he could, a hand pressed on him, stopping him.

He looked down to see Daniel’s hand.

Trevor froze and glared at Daniel, the nerve of Daniel to think he could lay his filthy hand on him. “What are you doing?! Get your filthy hand off—”

But he was barely able to articulate those words when Daniel interrupted, “Don't worry! I will pay!!”

Trevor looked at him in disbelief. What the hell was he saying?

Daniel stared at her for a long moment, clearly stunned at what she had just said.“A job?” he repeated slowly, as if tasting the word. “I should look for a job?”Magret raised a brow. “Yes. You want us to keep spoon-feeding you? You are a grown man.”Daniel nodded. “I understand. I will get something done.”Trevor rolled his eyes. “Ah, Daniel, ever since you got back from the hospital, Daniel has been feeling lazy. He literally does one or two gigs; now all he does is wander about with no source of income,” he hissed.“Trevor! Don't forget that you are talking to my husband like that. Can't you show a little bit of respect?” Caroline warned.“Respect is earned, Sophie, and if he does not make himself useful, he might lose you. I would not have a useless in-law live under the same roof with me,” Margret hissed in irritation.Daniel clenched his jaw but said nothing. His hands tightened at his sides, knuckles whitening as the words sank in.“I said I’ll get something done,” he repeated

"Brother, that is enough, please stand up!” Sophie said, feeling sympathy for her poor brother. She knows Trevor is full of pride, and having him kneel in front of her and Daniel would make him feel extremely bad. She bent down and slowly pulled him up to his feet, with her fingers wrapped around his arms. “That’s enough, brother. I know you didn't say that out of spite but out of concern for me. Get up,” she said. Trevor slowly rose to his feet, feeling his pride scattered. “Thank you, sister,” he said. Then he slowly turned to Daniel, who was standing beside Sophie with a smile on his face. “Can you see now? I have done that. Are you happy?” he said with spite in his tone. Daniel’s smile did not fade, but his eyes sharpened slightly. “This was never about making me happy,” he replied calmly. “It was about making things right.” “Do you think…?” “Enough!!” Margaret cut in sharply. “You guys, this isn't the time for you both to fight like cat and rat,” she barked in ange

The room went still at Margaret’s sharp command. Trevor’s head moved towards her mother in surprise, "Mum, what the hell you taking about?" Her gaze hardened, steady and unyielding, as she took a slow step forward. “Watch your words, Trevor,” she said calmly. “I know exactly what I am talking about.” Trevor ran a hand through his hair, with frustration clearly written across his face. “You’re acting like I committed a crime,” he snapped. “It was a statement, not a contract.” Margaret shook her head. “In this family, a statement made before witnesses carries weight,” she replied. “You did not whisper those words in private. You said them with confidence, with certainty, and with the intent to humiliate.” Sophie’s fingers curled at her sides. She could feel the tension crackling. This was no longer just between brothers. This was authority meeting defiance. Daniel finally spoke, his voice low. “You underestimated her,” he said simply. “And you were willing to stake your posi

Sophie looked at him curiously. “What do you mean?” “I mean this is just the beginning of good things in the hands of we, the Carringtons. With the Alisters by our side, we are going to really shine beyond our expectations,” Trevor said as he began pacing around the room with a grin. “I am so happy for you, Sophie. We are really happy! You made us proud,” he added. “Thank you so much, brother.” Daniel stood there, observing Trevor’s reactions and actions. He couldn’t help but feel disgusted by them. Yesterday, Trevor had promised that he would leave the Carringtons’ industry if Sophie made it work, and now he was pretending to be happy for her. He had always been that cunning. Daniel’s jaw tightened, but he said nothing. He remained by the window, his arms crossed, watching Trevor pace like a man already counting victories that were not yet his. Slowly, Daniel stepped forward with a smile, his hands tucked into his pockets. “It is such a good thing that my wife here ha

Sophie couldn't believe her eyes; her jaw dropped in surprise.“Yes,” the man replied calmly, a faint smile tugging at his lips. “One hundred and twenty million dollars.”A stunned silence followed his words.Sophie blinked once, then twice, forcing herself to regain composure. Inside, her mind raced—but she did not allow the shock to show for long. She straightened slowly, schooling her expression back into calm professionalism.“That is… quite generous, sir,” she said carefully. “May I ask what prompted such a significant increase?”The woman seated to the man’s left leaned forward slightly. A smile tugged at her lips; there was no way she could say that their big boss, Daniel, had commanded that it should be tripled even before she started her presentation.Although, after her presentation, the officials couldn’t help but nod at how perfectly she had made the proposal. The woman cleared her throat. “Your proposal doesn’t just benefit us short-term. Sophie didn’t bother to look at who that was before she asked, “Do I look okay?” She asked.Danile walked closer to her and let out a smile, he admired at his wife's perfect hour glass figure. “You are perfect, Sophie, you look impeccable. I have no doubt that you ate going to make a very prefect impression.” Sophie let out a smile and turned over to him, “thank you.
