CHAPTER 9

The moment Rose heard the emergency announcement echo through the city hall, she was already sprinting toward the entrance at full speed. Her heart pounded with terror as she shouted over her shoulder that her daughter was somewhere in the Cliff Area - the exact location the voice had mentioned was under demon attack.

Everyone in the hall immediately followed behind her. Military officers, awakeners, and civilians all rushed toward the exits in a chaotic stampede. The formal gathering was completely forgotten as people pushed past each other to get outside.

However Alex didn't follow the crowd through the main entrance. Instead, he slipped out through a different exit on the opposite side of the building. His face was grim with determination. This wasn't just about Rose's daughter anymore. That little girl was his daughter too, and there was no way he was going to let some demon hurt his own child.

Within minutes, everyone who had been at the hall was racing through the city streets toward the Cliff Area. But when they finally arrived at the district borders, they found their path completely blocked.

Awakener guards in full combat gear stood at every entrance to the area. They were systematically evacuating civilians who were fleeing the neighborhood, but absolutely nobody was being allowed to enter the danger zone.

However Rose rushed forward through the panicked crowds with her parents struggling to keep up behind her. Master Lawrence and Mrs. Lawrence pushed past evacuees and emergency workers until they reached the command post where the senior officials were coordinating the rescue operations. Rose's voice cracked with raw desperation as she confronted the officer in charge.

“My daughter is trapped somewhere inside that area, and your guards are refusing to let me through! I need you to give me official clearance right now so I can show them my identification. I have to get in there and save my daughter - she's only five years old!”

Rose had completely abandoned any attempt at maintaining her usual composed demeanor. Her voice was shaking and getting louder with each word. Respectful tones and proper military protocol meant absolutely nothing to her anymore. Her emotions were spiraling completely out of control as terror consumed every rational thought in her mind. The maternal instinct to protect her child was overriding everything else. The only thing that existed in her world right now was finding little Lilly alive and bringing her to safety.

Master Lawrence placed a trembling hand on his daughter's shoulder, his own face pale with worry. Mrs. Lawrence was openly crying, wringing her hands as she looked toward the blocked entrance.

The Cliff Area had always been promoted as one of the most secure and peaceful neighborhoods in all of Lakewood City. The magical barriers there were supposed to be impenetrable. Demons had never once been spotted in that district throughout all the years since the protective enchantments were first installed. The area had such a perfect safety record that most families with young children specifically chose to live there because of the guaranteed protection.

That legendary reputation for absolute security was exactly the reason Rose had felt completely comfortable leaving Lilly at home with the babysitter instead of bringing her to the military gathering. The Cliff Area was supposed to be the one place in the entire city where parents never had to worry about demon attacks or monster invasions.

If Rose had known that something like this could possibly happen, she would have kept her precious daughter by her side every single second of every day.

The evacuation commander, a stern-faced man in his fifties with military insignia on his uniform, stepped forward to address Rose directly. His voice was flat and bureaucratic, showing no emotion despite the desperate situation unfolding around him.

“Listen carefully, ma'am. There is absolutely nothing we can do to accommodate your request. We do not have authorization to grant special access permits to anyone, regardless of their circumstances. Every single civilian is being evacuated from the danger zone without exception. Our Super Soldiers will be deploying shortly to sweep through the entire area and eliminate all hostile monsters. With that operational plan in place, you can only stay put behind the safety barriers and hope that your daughter remains safe and unharmed until we complete our mission.”

Immediately hearing what the man just said, Rose felt like the ground had disappeared beneath her feet. She stared at the man in complete disbelief, her mind struggling to process what he had just said. The cold, heartless way he had delivered those words made her blood boil with rage. After a long moment of letting his response fully register, something inside her snapped entirely.

“Slap!!”

Her hand moved before her brain could stop it. The sharp crack of her palm connecting with the official's cheek echoed through the immediate area around them. Several nearby soldiers turned to look at the commotion.

“How dare you speak to me like that! How dare you tell me such a heartless thing when my child's life is in danger!”

Master Lawrence's face flushed red with anger as he stepped protectively in front of his daughter. His voice boomed with authority that came from years of military leadership.

“That was completely unprofessional conduct, officer! How could you possibly say something so callous and dismissive to a desperate mother? What kind of training did you receive?”

Mrs. Lawrence was shaking with fury, her usual gentle demeanor replaced by fierce maternal protective instincts.

“You should be ashamed of yourself! A five-year-old little girl is trapped in there with monsters, and you're standing here spouting bureaucratic nonsense like some heartless robot!”

Master Lawrence moved closer to the commander, his voice taking on a threatening tone that made several guards reach for their weapons.

“I'm giving you one final opportunity to reconsider your position. Either you provide us with the necessary authorization to enter that area immediately, or we will physically disrupt and interfere with this entire evacuation operation until you do.”
