Weston bites on his lower lip. Yeah, Coben is some bad guy but knowing why he's doing all these crazy stuff, Weston doesn't know why but he feels like he might be able to help Coben out of it. It doesn't look like Coben is enjoying any of this stuff he's doing.
He looks around the place. The party seems to have gotten more crazy. Two seats away from them, two guys are straddling each other. Weston quickly takes his eyes off them.Just as he stands up to drag Coben out of the place, a guy, the same guy who they saw in the bar outside comes over to him.“Is he drunk?” The guy asks.“I guess. I don't really remember the way out, can you help?”“What a waste.” The guy makes a tsk tsk noise. “Brought some cutie and got drunk.” He looks at Weston. “There is a backdoor.”Together, they help Coben out of the room. Weston almost wishes he were not able to see all the crazy stuff going on in the room as they go out of the place.

Outside, Weston calls Lorette. She answers on the first ring.“You're okay?” She asks hastily. “Yes. The cults here are fully funded by some X guy,” Weston says.“‘X guy’?” “Yeah. There seem to be only one person in charge of these cults. Tomorrow, I will have to meet with Liam and ask if his group too is funded by this X guy.”“Who is the X guy?” “I couldn't get Coben to tell me.” “Shit…” “I'll meet Liam tomorrow and ask him, but before then, you and San can find out anything that can help us.” Lorette sighs. “You're sure you're okay?” “Yes.” “Should I come see you?”“I'm not a kid, Lorette.”“Didn't say you were.”“You're making it look like I'm coming from a den of lions,” Weston says. He strolls to his room. “I wasn't. How was…um…you think he's cool?”“Who?” Weston notices a shadow. He looks around, he can't see anyone.

“Sleep tight, Weston,” Santiago says. Outside, Santiago closes the door as gently as his anger can allow without making Weston suspect anything. He storms after Jose until they are far away from the room. “What the fuck was that?” Jose is the first to snap.“I should be asking you the same. Why did you have to lie to Weston?”“Would you rather I told Weston that you are one of the Achievers and that you sneaked into my room to kill me?” “I'd rather you did that. I don't fucking want to owe anyone a favour.”“Now answer my question. What were you trying to do?” Jose asks.“You guessed correctly.”Jose scoffs. “I had no idea you'd stop low to this, man.”“For not telling on me to Weston, I'll not do anything to you for the rest of this month.” “You're really something else.” “End of discussion,” Santiago says and starts to walk away. “You're crazy, man. I swear you are. Ki

The next morning, Weston is drying his hair when his phone turns on on the table. A message pops up and the screen light goes off. Still cleaning his hair, Weston takes the phone to check the message. He hisses. It's from his brother. Those two will really not stop sending him messages? He already has like a hundred messages from his brother and two hundred from his sister even though he checked his sister's yesterday. He clicks on his brother's just to see what the fuck the man is sending. He scoffs. Most of them are shitty motivational stuff and a few invitations to some shitty parties. He navigates from the message app. He drops the phone on the table and resumes drying his hair. Wait a fucking minute. Weston grabs the phone again. He checks the last message. It's an invitation as a VIP to an exclusive party that the governor is organizing with his wife to celebrate his new house. The party will start by eight p

“Are you crazy?!” Jose shouts.“I guess I am.” He turns back to the attendant, her face is very coloured with blush now. “I'm relying on you to get my…um…honey, are you the wife or the—”“Weston, shut up before I pull out your tongue.” Weston chuckles. “This way, sir,” the attendant says. Weston sits down. Grabs a magazine and flips through it like he's some husband waiting for his wife to get dressed. He chuckles at his own humour. He never got to get married to Ivy. They only exchanged rings and that was it. He thought it's not really necessary for him to marry her since they were so ‘in love’ with each other. Crazy to think he was the only one in love with her all the while. Some minutes later, Jose comes out, dressed in a black suit.Weston frowns. “Are you preparing for a funeral?”Jose gnashes his teeth. “I'mma pay you back, trust me.”Weston quickly takes another picture of Jose's p

His phone rings. It's a call from Lorette. He can't explain things to her right now. He hangs up and sets the phone to airplane mode. The car pulls inside the gate, the security men by the door bows until the car drives past them. Right beside the white magnificent hall where the party is taking place, Weston can see a lot of expensive cars parked. Just looking at it, Weston knows for sure this is a kind of party that's meant for the governor. Like, really, the cars seem to be competing which is more expensive than the other. The cab pulls over to the curb and Weston gets out of it with Santiago. Santiago can see the cabman looking at him with some kind of ‘hey, had no idea you're some rich folk ‘ look as he pays the man. “I had no idea graves are this. I'll love to be buried here when I die,” Jose mutters, looking around the quiet place. Weston chuckles. They both stride to the door. The man at the door isn't armed, Weston is still growing relieved seeing this when he sights th

At first, Weston wants to stay there and argue but he looks around. There are more than ten men with guns around. One funny movement and he's got his stomach filled with bullets. No.His life isn't all that cool but he ain't ready to die in such a manner. And, definitely, not before he meets Hannah and reconciles with her. Like an obedient lamb, he follows the security men inside the hall. They turn the opposite room to the room where the party is taking place. The security man opens the door. Weston looks around. Jose takes a sip from the wine. He glances around. Weston is still nowhere in sight. He sighs. What the hell is going on? He has no idea why Weston brought him here but he sure as hell knows this isn't some funeral party. Not with all these people on the dancefloor and the air filled with a lot of cologne that cost as much as all the clothes lower classes can buy in their lifetime. He takes another sip from the wine. The corner of his eyes catches the girl sitting opposite him staring at him again. It's weird. She's been doing that since she came to sit with him. Well, she's his type of girl with her long brown hair. He can't really tell if there are makeovers on her face, but if there are, they are moderate. And, he kind of likes her lips. Everything about her features are his type but her staring at him like she's seeing into his soul creeps him out. He clears his throat and she immediately looks away. He glances at the dancefloor

Just as she is going to wrap her hands around him, Jose steps aside. His head is hurting really bad now. The woman ends up grasping the space. “J–Jo-Jose…” Jose shakes his head. He heads to the door. He can't stay here. He has to go. “Jose!” The woman calls after him. He stops walking. He will himself to walk away but he can't. Maybe because his body, every part of his body, has been wanting to hear this. Waiting to hear this voice all his life. “I…I…where have you been?” The woman asks, her voice cracking up at each word like she might break down in tears pretty soon. Jose swallows hard. He slowly turns around, he slaps a smile on his face. “Oh, it's a great pleasure to see you, ma'am. Your governance is dope. Ever since the beginning of your tenure, I have been enjoying life like never before. My account balance had been increasing in a very incredible—”“Stop…” Jose's mother says. “Stop.” “I'm sorry, m

“I have now,” Weston drops the picture frame on the sofa and carries Hannah in arms. “How is that? Did they disappear and come back?” She asks. “Daddy, how do people become people? I have not seen anyone jump down from the sky. Are there places where people go to pick babies? Daddy…answer me…” she whines as he carries her in the car. “Which of them should I answer first?” “When I grow up, can I become an actor? I will be on the screen. Will you watch my movies?” “Of course. Why won't I?” About two hours later when Weston drives to his parents house, Hannah is sleeping in the back seat probably tired of rambling for hours. He smiles as he parks the park and wakes her. “Have we arrived?” She asks, looking at him sleepily. Weston nods. “Big pop and lala are waiting to see you.” He helps her get out of the car and holds her hand. He's barely climbed the first step leading to the house when his mother rushes

Later that evening, Weston is in the sitting room, watching Lorette and Hannah have one of their long funny conversations as they prepare for a visit to his parents. “When I grow older, I want to be a museum tour guide,” Hannah says. “Didn't you say you want to be a make-up artist some minutes ago?” Lorette asks as he helps her into her shoes. “I can do that as a side job. When I don't have clients in the shop, I'll quickly go to the museum,” Hannah says. “What about the online cooking tutorials? How are you going to have time for that?” “Oh…that? Daddy, I can shoot videos at midnight, right?” Weston frowns. “When are you going to sleep then?” “I can sleep for two hours.” “Two hours?” Weston asks in horror. “Yes. I am going to shoot the cooking tutorial videos for like two hours. Another two hours, I'll use it to shoot videos for my dance clas

Three days later, Weston knocks at the door of a hospital room before going in. The patient on the bed raises his head. He stares at Weston then at Hannah whom Weston is holding.“You're okay?” Weston asks before realizing it's the dumbest question to ask a person on a hospital bed. “Yes…?” Jose answers. Weston can't really tell if Jose is trying to play dumb too or he doesn't know what he's saying. “Hannah, meet Jose, he's one of the best friends that daddy has,” Weston tells his daughter. “And, Jose, this is my daughter.” Jose's mouth parts slightly. He closes it a few seconds later and smiles. “She…she looks young.” Weston chuckles. “Young? What's a five year old supposed to look like? Old?” “I…sorry. I mean. Shit. You have a sure way of taking me by surprise.” “You think so?” Weston strides to Jose's bed. He drops the fruit basket in his hand on the table. “Last time I checked, you did some

“Hey, Santiago,” his godfather says once there is an answer at the other end. “How are you, sir?”“I…I'm sorry.” His godfather shut his eyes. “What the fuck did you do again? I already told you I got Weston and Lorette covered. I have Weston's kid with me, I'll use her to—” “That's not it,” his father cuts in quickly. “I…um…I told Weston about Dylan.” For a lot of seconds, there is silence at the other end. “Where are you?” Santiago's voice is unbelievably too calm for the revelation. “Home, of course.” “Let's talk face to face.” Then the line goes off. The phone falls from his godfather's hand. He runs his hand through his grey hair. “You have a kid?” “Am I supposed to answer that?” “If I knew you had a kid, I'd have abducted her and used her against you. I had no idea at all.”What? Is he out of his mind? His godfather raises his head and looks at Weston. “Once San

Weston can tell from the look on her face that there is something more. He waits for her to tell him. “I stumbled in on San and his father arguing one day, San was kind of telling his father to keep shut if he doesn't want his ass in the pool.” Weston waits. He's sure she isn't just telling him just for telling sake. There must be something more. He waits a while longer, forcing his damn brain not to think his daughter is five and she's with fucking Santiago. “He hates it when people snitch on him,” Lorette adds. “Kind of…he…” she lets out a deep breath. “Sorry. I just…I had no idea I'd be telling this to anyone.” For some seconds, she stops to get her emotions back together. “Even if San tells me something as little as what he ate last night that nobody knows about, he doesn't want me to tell anyone. When…I think we were sixteen when I first realized it. He told me he was fooling around with a girl and I kind of jokingly told the girl to tak

Weston stops the car and runs his hand through his hair. “I begged you, apologized to you, did all sorts of things but you still didn't agree to get married to me, so why do you keep asking about your daughter?” “When did you apologize to me?” There is silence at the other end before Ivy starts to talk. “Okay, since you want to hear it, I'mma tell you. If there is anything I regret, it's having Hannah. I thought you would dump me for some other women later if I didn't have a child for you since you don't really seem all that ready to get married to me. I needed something to assure me you're not going anywhere and getting pregnant seemed like the best deal.” Weston bites hard on his lower lip. “You must have figured this out but I stopped using contraceptives without telling you. But I'm starting to realize it's all stupid now. If I knew Hannah was going to be a burden to me, I wouldn't have gotten pregna

With rage, he dials Santiago's number. “What the fuck do you think you're doing?” He shouts. “Hey, you wanna make me deaf or something?” “Whatever shit you're up to, you should know better than to involve my daughter.” “What can you do?” “Where the hell are you?” “Not so easy, bro. Not so easy. I need to spend some time playing with Hannah and getting to know her before we come to an agreement of what to do. Till then, stay anxious.” With that, the line goes off. Weston dials the number again, it doesn't ring. Obviously, Santiago blocked him. He dials another number. “Find out where that fucking bastard is.” “Alright, sir.” He dials his father's number. “I need to find out where Santiago is.” “Okay. Weston comes out of his car. It's been more than thirty minutes since the cop pulled him over but he's not responded to him since then. The other cars he pulled over before Weston's are long gone and the cop doesn't seem like he has anything he's doing at the moment. “Excuse me,” Weston calls the cop’s attention. The cop glances at Weston. “I'll attend to you soon, I'm quite busy.” “If you're not going to come check whatever it is that you want to check, I might as well start going. I didn't do anything wrong in the first place.” “You didn't do anything wrong?” The cop scoffs. “Was that how you were supposed to put on your seatbelt? Was that how you were supposed to fasten it?!” Weston frowns. “What?” Is there a certain way to fasten seat belts? “Come with me,” the cop says, already walking to Weston's car. “Daddy was smiling in the picture Abigail gave to me. And, daddy only smiles when he is with people he likes.” Santiago chuckles again. “How old are you?” “I am five years old. How old are you?” “Me? I'm the same age as your father.” “Daddy is…um…twenty five. You're twenty five?!” She asks in surprise.Santiago nods. “Yeah. Why?”“Daddy said monsters are old, like five hundred years old. And Father Richard said only monsters kill people. Does that mean you're a young monster?” The smile dies off Santiago's face. “I'm not a fucking monster.”“‘Fucking’? What does that mean? Do you have a dictionary? I'll look up the meaning.” “I mean, I'm not a monster. That's the meaning.” He glances at Hannah to see her staring at him. The glasses on her face feel like some gadget she's using to scan his thoughts. “What…” he clears his throat. “You can't see without your glasses?” She sighs. “It's a lon
