The lights went out completely, and Mary’s scream tore through the darkness as she cried Ethan’s name. He reached blindly through the blackness trying to find her, but before his hand could close around hers, something struck the floor nearby with tremendous force. Victor shouted for everyone to get down just as the blast tore through the laboratory, sending shattered glass raining across the floor while thick smoke filled the air around them.
His Danger Sense flared again, warning him that someone was approaching, and he raised the Beginner Blade and waited tensely as a shadow moved slowly through the smoke. The figure from the doorway stepped forward, and though Ethan could not make out his face clearly in the haze, he could hear the steady sound of his breathing. “You have grown,” the stranger said calmly. Ethan tightened his grip on the blade. “Who are you?” The man ignored the question entirely, his attention fixed instead on Mary. “You were supposed to keep him away from this place.” She stepped forward despite her fear. “I tried.” “You failed,” he replied coldly. Ethan moved himself between them. “You know my mother.” The stranger finally turned his gaze toward him. “I knew her before you were old enough to remember her.” Anger surged through Ethan’s chest. “Then tell me what happened to me.” The man only smiled. “You are asking the wrong question.” “What should I ask?” “You should ask what happened to everyone else.” Victor suddenly raised his weapon. “Enough.” The stranger regarded him calmly. “You are Victor Kane.” Victor went rigid with surprise. “You know me?” “I know every player who survived the first awakening,” the man answered. Ethan turned to Victor. “You said you did not know these people.” “I do not,” Victor insisted. The stranger laughed softly. “That is what you tell yourself.” Before anyone could react further, the laboratory screens flickered back to life, displaying the same haunting image across every single one. A young Ethan sat inside a glass chamber, no more than six years old, while Mary stood outside it crying uncontrollably. Ethan stared at the footage in disbelief. “That is me.” “Yes,” the stranger confirmed simply. The recording continued, showing a scientist standing near the chamber. “Subject Zero remains stable.” Another voice responded from off screen. “How long before activation?” “Unknown. His body is responding differently from the others.” Ethan stepped closer to the screen, his stomach tightening. “Others?” The image shifted to reveal dozens of similar chambers, each containing a child, some unconscious and others crying softly. Ethan’s face drained of color. “What is this place?” Mary closed her eyes, unable to look at the screen. “A research facility.” “You brought me here?” “I brought you here because they told me you were sick.” He turned to face her fully. “You knew?” “I knew they were studying you. I did not know what they were doing to the others.” The stranger spoke from behind them, his voice flat. “She knew enough.” Mary looked at him with defiance breaking through her fear. “I did everything I could to get him out.” “And you succeeded,” the stranger said, pausing meaningfully. “That was your greatest mistake.” Ethan glanced between them in confusion. “What does that mean?” The stranger gestured toward the screen. “Watch.” The recording pressed forward, showing the younger Ethan suddenly opening his eyes as the scientists rushed toward the chamber in alarm, a red warning flashing across the display. SUBJECT ZERO RESPONSE DETECTED. The lights inside the chamber began flashing violently, and the child screamed just as every other chamber in the room burst open at once, the children inside collapsing one after another as their monitors flickered dark. Ethan stumbled backward. “What happened?” The stranger answered without emotion. “The first awakening.” Victor stared at the screen in horror. “That was impossible.” “It happened.” “How did anyone survive?” The stranger’s gaze settled directly on Ethan. “One did.” A knot formed in Ethan’s stomach as the screen showed his younger self sitting alone inside the chamber, his eyes glowing with a faint blue light. A scientist’s voice whispered through the recording. “The system chose him.” Ethan felt a wave of cold spread through his entire body as the blue screen appeared before him. MEMORY FRAGMENT RECOVERED. PLAYER ZERO IDENTIFICATION CONFIRMED. ORIGINAL STATUS: SUBJECT ZERO. He stared at the words in silence as Victor stepped closer. “Subject Zero was not a title.” Ethan turned toward him slowly. “What?” “It was your designation.” The stranger nodded in confirmation. “Player Zero was created from Subject Zero.” Ethan shook his head in denial. “No.” He turned to face his mother. “You told me I was ordinary.” “I wanted you to have a normal life.” “You erased my past.” Tears streamed freely down Mary’s face. “I was trying to give you a future.” He wanted desperately to be angry with her, but the raw pain in her voice held him back. Then another recording appeared, showing Mary carrying a young Ethan through a darkened hallway while alarms blared around them and several armed men gave chase. She reached a large door and spun around to face a man in a white coat standing at the far end, the same man now standing before Ethan in the present. Mary’s voice rang out through the recording. “You will never get him back.” The footage ended abruptly. Ethan looked at the stranger. “You were chasing her.” “Yes.” “Why?” “Because the System had already chosen you.” His eyes narrowed. “Chosen me for what?” The man offered no answer, instead tilting his head toward the ceiling. “They are coming.” Victor caught the sound of distant footsteps approaching. “How many?” “Enough,” the stranger replied grimly, just as the laboratory doors began shaking violently under some outside force. The Hunters had found them. Ethan studied the stranger carefully. “You are not one of them.” “No.” “Then why are you here?” The man’s expression shifted into something Ethan could not quite read. “I came to make sure you survived.” Ethan raised his blade defensively. “Why would you care?” The stranger smiled faintly. “Because if you die, this world dies with you.” The laboratory doors exploded inward, and Hunters flooded into the room as their commander pointed directly at Ethan. “Take him alive.” Ethan braced himself for the fight, and then the System flashed before his eyes. NEW MISSION: ESCAPE THE FACILITY. TIME LIMIT: 20 MINUTES. OBJECTIVE: PROTECT MARY COLE AND REACH THE SURFACE. REWARD: LEVEL UP. His eyes lingered on the mission details, noting that he sat at seventy experience points, meaning survival and success here would finally push him to Level 2. But before he could move, the stranger stepped forward to face the incoming Hunters. “I will hold them.” Ethan looked at him uncertainly. “You said you came to make sure I survived.” “I did.” The stranger shrugged off his coat, revealing for the first time a strange mark etched across his right arm, the very same symbol Victor had recognized from the Hunter documents earlier. He looked at Ethan one final time. “Take your mother and run.” Ethan grabbed Mary’s hand and pulled her toward the emergency exit as the stranger turned to face the Hunters behind them, the sounds of weapons fire and explosions erupting through the laboratory as they fled down the corridor. Mary struggled to keep pace, and Ethan slowed to check on her. “Mom, are you okay?” “Yes,” she said, though her expression carried something heavier than exhaustion. “But there is something you still do not know.” Ethan stopped in his tracks. “What?” Fear filled her face completely. “When they took you from that facility, you were not alone.” He stared at her in confusion. “What do you mean?” She swallowed hard before answering. “There was another child.” At that moment, Ethan’s Danger Sense flared to life, warning him that someone stood behind them. He turned quickly to find a young woman standing at the far end of the corridor, tears glistening in her eyes as she looked directly at him and whispered his name. “Ethan.” The System appeared once more. UNKNOWN PLAYER DETECTED. CONNECTION TO PLAYER ZERO: CONFIRMED. Ethan stared at the woman in stunned silence as she slowly raised her hand toward him. “I have been looking for you for twenty years.” Mary’s face turned white as she stared at the stranger before them. “She survived.” The woman offered a sad, knowing smile. “No, Mary.” Her eyes shifted back to Ethan. “I was the one you left behind.”Latest Chapter
My Father’s Voice
Ethan could not breathe. The voice beneath the Safe Zone had called him by his name. Not Player Zero. Not Subject Zero. Ethan. Then it had called him something even more impossible: my son.His eyes remained fixed on the cracked ground."Dad?" The word came out barely louder than a whisper.Mary stepped toward him. "Ethan," she began, but he turned to her before she could say more."You knew," he said. "You knew he was alive?"Mary's face tightened with pain. "I don't know if he is alive.""Then who is speaking?""I don't know."Ethan shook his head. "No more lies."The ground shook again, and several guards fell as cracks spread across the floor of the Safe Zone. People screamed and rushed away from the center. Victor grabbed Ethan's shoulder and told him they needed to move, but Ethan pushed his hand away."I need to know," he said."Knowing will not keep you alive," Victor warned."Neither will running forever."A deep vibration passed beneath them, and then the voice returned. "Et
The Door Beneath Blackridge
Ethan stood frozen in the middle of the street. The System message remained in front of him: PLAYER ZERO REQUIRED TO OPEN THE SEALED STRUCTURE. The words made his stomach tighten. He looked toward the Safe Zone in the distance. The tall walls were visible through the smoke, surrounded by hundreds of fleeing survivors, while searchlights swept across the streets and armed guards stood along the gates. It should have looked like safety, but instead Ethan could not stop thinking about Mary's words. The door beneath Blackridge."What is underneath the Safe Zone?" Ethan asked.Mary did not answer immediately, and Ethan turned toward her. "Mom."Mary lowered her eyes. "I don't know everything.""You know enough.""I know that the facility was not the only place they built."Ethan's expression hardened. "What does that mean?"Mary looked toward the Safe Zone. "There was another structure beneath the city. Your father knew about it."Ethan went completely still. His father was a subject he ra
The Race To The Safe Zone
Ethan ran through the burning street with Mary beside him as the timer continued counting down. 00:38:56. Three kilometers separated them from the Safe Zone, but the distance meant nothing compared to what stood behind them. The Seeker's avatar was following, and Ethan couldn't hear its footsteps, which frightened him more than anything else that night. A creature that powerful should have made the ground shake with every step, yet it moved through the city almost silently.Claire ran beside Ethan. "Do you still feel it?"He glanced behind him. "No."Victor looked at him. "That is worse."Ethan understood what he meant. If his Danger Sense couldn't detect the creature, then the Seeker was either moving beyond its range or deliberately hiding from it, and neither possibility offered any comfort. They reached an intersection where three roads stretched ahead of them. The main road was filled with Shadow Eaters, the road on the left was blocked by overturned buses, and the road on the ri
The Seeker’s Mark
Ethan ran directly toward the creature, and everything around him seemed to slow. The Seeker's avatar stood behind Mary, its dark body almost blending into the smoke that covered the street, its long arm already reaching toward her. Ethan didn't think. He acted, pushing himself forward with everything he had and swinging the Beginner Blade. The blade struck the creature's arm, and a violent force exploded between them. Ethan was thrown backward, but the creature staggered as well, and for the first time he saw something unexpected. The blade had actually wounded it. A thin line of black liquid ran down its arm.Ethan stared at it as the System immediately appeared. ATTACK EFFECT CONFIRMED. BEGINNER BLADE CAN DAMAGE SEEKER AVATAR. His breathing grew heavier. So it could be hurt. That alone was enough."Ethan!" Mary rushed toward him."Stay back!" he shouted. The creature turned toward him, its eyes glowing brighter. "You should not have this weapon."Ethan's expression hardened. "You t
One Hour
The ground split open beneath Ethan's feet. He jumped backward and pulled Mary with him as a deep crack tore across the street, sending pieces of broken concrete flying into the air. The survivors around them screamed and scattered in every direction.Ethan looked up. The massive shadow above the clouds was moving, and for several seconds nobody understood what they were seeing. Then something enormous pushed through the dark clouds, and Ethan's body went cold. This was not a monster like the Shadow Eaters. This thing was far larger. Only part of its body was visible, but Ethan could make out what looked like a huge black hand pressing against the clouds, a hand larger than several buildings put together.Victor slowly lowered his weapon. "We need to leave."Ethan looked at him. "What is that?"Victor didn't answer right away. His face had gone pale. "I don't know."Claire stepped closer to Ethan. "You said the System warned you about an unknown entity."Ethan nodded, and the blue scr
The One They Left Behind
Ethan stood completely frozen as the young woman remained at the end of the corridor, watching him with an expression that suggested she had spent her entire life waiting for exactly this moment. Her clothes hung torn around her, and blood stained one sleeve, though she seemed entirely unconcerned with the wound, her eyes locked steadily on Ethan instead.“You know me?” he finally managed to ask.She offered a small, pained smile in response. “I knew you before you forgot me.”Mary quickly stepped between them. “No.” The woman turned her gaze toward her. “You remember now, don’t you?” All the color drained from Mary’s face, and Ethan turned toward his mother in confusion. “Mom, who is she?” She gave no answer as the woman continued walking closer.“My name is Claire,” she said.Ethan studied her features carefully, sensing something oddly familiar about her though he could not place why. “I don’t remember you.” “I know,” she replied softly, pressing a hand against her chest. “But I re
