NOLAN POV
I woke with a blade against my throat, a woman kneeling on my chest, and my own blood drying into a stiff crust beneath my back. "You were supposed to stay dead," she said. Her voice was quiet and perfectly calm, which frightened me far more than shouting would have. I tried to swallow and felt the edge of the steel bite into my skin, so I went completely still. Silver-black hair fell across her shoulder, her amber eyes glowed faintly in the gloom, and two curved obsidian horns rose from her temples like something carved for a throne. "I think you have me confused with someone else," I said. "Do I?" She tilted her head toward my left. "Then explain him." I turned my eyes as far as the blade allowed. A man lay on the broken stone a few feet away with his chest torn open and his face gone gray. It was my face, down to a crooked scar through the left eyebrow that I had never owned until now. My stomach dropped. The last thing I remembered was a flickering monitor and a message that read *Character Transfer Initialized*. "That isn't possible," I whispered. "No, it isn't." The blade pressed a little harder. "Which is why I'm deciding whether to cut your throat a second time." Around us, the shrine was a wreck of cracked pillars, shattered weapons, and stone dark with old bloodstains. A ritual circle had been carved into the floor behind her, and half of it looked as though something had burst out from underneath. Memories began to surface in pieces, like photographs spilled across a table. My name was Nolan Rhyse, I was an adventurer in a world called Veydran, and most of the guild hall hated me. The corpse beside me had owned this body until a short while ago. "Say your name," she ordered. "Nolan Rhyse." "And mine?" "I don't know it." Something shifted behind her eyes, so I kept talking before she could decide what it meant. "You hold that knife like someone who has done this before, but your hand is trembling. You're also bleeding through your coat on the left side, and you keep glancing at that broken circle." I kept my voice level. "If I were just a body you needed to finish, you wouldn't care what happened to it." Her gaze snapped back to me, and the blade did not move. "You're sharp for a man who spent his last week begging the guild for scraps." "People change after they die." "They don't." She leaned close enough that I could smell smoke and iron on her. "My name is Veyra Noxen. You know me, Nolan, and you know exactly what I am. Yet you're studying me like a locked door." "Maybe I'm just trying not to scream." "Try harder." I nearly laughed, which would probably have been the last mistake I ever made. Instead I drew a slow breath and played the only card I had. "If you kill me now, you may destroy the only evidence of what happened in this shrine." Her eyes narrowed. "What evidence?" I had no idea. But her fingers had tightened on the hilt in a way that had nothing to do with anger, and every instinct I owned told me I had guessed right. "The kind you came here to find," I said. "The kind that dies with me." For a long moment neither of us spoke. Then she eased the blade back by perhaps an inch, and the relief that rushed through me was strong enough to make my vision swim. "Tell me what you remember," she said. "Scraps. A guild hall, an empty purse, and a lot of angry faces." I held her stare. "Nothing about this place and nothing about why you'd want me dead." "You expect me to believe you forgot?" "I expect you to tell me why you killed me." My voice cracked on the last word, and I hated how human it sounded. "From where I'm lying, you're the only one here who knows." Something like hesitation crossed her face. "You stole something that didn't belong to you." "What did I steal?" "The thing you died trying to carry out of here." Her lip curled. "You weren't the only fool who wanted it, but you were the one who bled for it." "That doesn't sound like a reason to murder someone." "It was an order." She said it too quickly, and her eyes slid toward the circle again. "Not that I owe you an explanation." "Then why are you still here?" She opened her mouth to answer, and the floor began to hum. The vibration crept up through my spine and into my teeth before I heard it. The carved lines in the stone lit one after another with a pale, sickly glow, and dust drifted from the ceiling in thin gray streams. Veyra spun toward the circle with her blade raised. A voice rose from somewhere beneath the stone, deep and flat and utterly inhuman. "Sovereign vessel detected. Resonance failure confirmed." I pushed myself onto one elbow. "What does that mean?" She didn't answer. When she turned back, all of her arrogance had drained away, and what replaced it was raw, unguarded fear, the look of someone watching the thing she dreaded finally walk through the door. "Get up," she said. "A minute ago you wanted me dead." "Get up, Nolan!" She seized my arm and hauled me off the floor with startling strength. "Now!" My legs nearly buckled, but I stumbled after her while the shrine groaned around us. A crack split the stone beneath our feet and widened into a gap that tore her grip from my sleeve. I hit the ground hard on my side, and she landed on the far edge of the fracture as the pillars overhead began to come apart. "Take my hand!" she shouted. I reached for her, and a tendril of black smoke erupted from the circle and coiled around my wrist like a living chain. "Veyra!" She lunged across the gap and brought her blade down on the tendril with everything she had. The instant steel touched shadow, every line in the floor flared white and the whole shrine seemed to inhale. Pain shot up my arm, and a pane of pale light snapped into being before my eyes. SOVEREIGN RESONANCE ACTIVATED. FIRST COMPATIBLE SOUL DETECTED: VEYRA NOXEN. CONNECTION INITIATION: FORCED. Veyra dropped to one knee with her blade still in her fist. A ring of glowing script was spreading across her wrist, bright and burning, and it matched the pattern crawling up my own arm. She stared at it, then slowly raised her eyes to mine, and her amber gaze blazed with naked fury. "What have you done to me?”Latest Chapter
Chapter 10: The First Seal Breaks
NOLAN POVThe thing that stepped out of the Hollow Gate had no face. Its body was a human silhouette assembled from shards of black glass, and ancient markings crawled beneath its surface like veins of light. Every step it took made the magic in the chamber flicker. The Quiet Meridian researchers dropped to their knees, and one of them began to laugh. "We succeeded," he said. "We actually succeeded."The entity turned its head toward him, and the laughter died. The man rose into the air with his limbs twisting as the creature drained the magic out of him, then fell like a dropped coat.Thessari clutched my wrist with trembling fingers. "That is not what they were trying to summon."The entity turned to me, and its voice scraped through the chamber like a blade on stone. "The vessel has returned."A wave of force rolled outward and shattered every artificial anchor in the room. Researchers screamed and scattered, and several of them did not get up again. Orlisse shouted for everyone to
Chapter 9: The Woman Who Dreams of My Death
THESSARI POVI have watched Nolan Rhyse die eleven times. In one future a blade finds his chest, in another the Hollow Gate collapses on top of him, and in the worst of them he survives long enough to become something that no longer remembers why it wanted to save the world.I have tried to change those visions, and I have tried to ignore them. I once even tried to kill him before he could reach the gate, but every choice I made changed one thing while making another worse. Now the Quiet Meridian has chained me to the First Seal, and the woman who once promised to help me escape stands beside the machine that will open it. I close my eyes as the eleventh vision ends and the twelfth begins. In this one the Meridian wins. Its researchers bend the mechanism to their will, and the gate obeys them like a well-trained hound. In the next they die screaming, torn apart by the force they woke. In the third Nolan stands on the central platform with both palms pressed to the ancient anchors whil
Chapter 8: The War Demon's Price
NOLAN POVThe woman waiting outside the maintenance exit carried no visible weapon, and she clearly did not need one. The air around her hummed with pressure, and the flagstones cracked beneath her boots with every unhurried step.Orlisse Drevane looked at Veyra first. "You look terrible."Veyra raised her blade. "You look like someone who has come to make a mistake."Orlisse ignored the threat and turned to me, her gaze settling on the mark glowing at my wrist. "So you are the human soul that has everyone digging up graves. Tell me, Nolan Rhyse, do you know what happens when a prison recognizes its key?""I'd love to say yes," I said. "But I've been here less than a day.""Then you are either very lucky or very doomed." She finally glanced at Mireth, who was trying to melt into the wall. "I was a war strategist in the old Sovereign territories, and I have tracked the Quiet Meridian for months. Their digging is shaking sites that should have stayed buried. This is no longer only about
Chapter 7: The Woman Who Sold My Death
MIRETH POVI have three rules for surviving a Quiet Meridian excavation. Never enter alone, never touch anything that recognizes your soul, and never bring a demon like Veyra Noxen anywhere near your hiding place.Today I have broken all three.Black mist was already creeping through the passage behind me, and the structure had recognized the man trailing Veyra. I had no wish to learn what it would do once it finished identifying him. I glanced over my shoulder and found him standing in the corridor with his head tilted, like someone who meant to demand a full explanation while the ceiling fell on him."Run!" I shouted."Which way?""Away from the mist! Follow my light!"I had come into these ruins days earlier to steal a ledger from a Quiet Meridian courier, so I knew the passages well enough to lead them. My lantern burned violet and exposed carved markings that ordinary light could never reveal, and I used them to steer us around the unstable sections. Every few steps I checked the
Chapter 6: The Voice That Called Me Back
NOLAN POV"The vessel has returned," the voice repeated, deep and patient. "Initiate recovery."The ground shuddered beneath my boots, and dust sifted down from the ledge above our hiding place. Veyra had her sword drawn, but she wasn't watching the ravine. She was staring at my wrist, where the black marking had begun to crawl toward my elbow like ink spreading through water."Tell me you know what that means.""I've been in this world for less than a day.""That was not what I asked."Before I could answer, the black crystal crumbled to dust in my palm. A deep metallic groan rose from beneath the ravine, as though an enormous door had begun to turn on hinges that had not moved in a thousand years. My interface flooded with unstable readings, and I forced myself to parse them. The signal wasn't radiating outward like ordinary magic. It was searching, sweeping through the stone until it found one particular soul, and when it touched mine, the bond between Veyra and me cinched so hard
Chapter 5: The Man Who Knew I Wasn't Him
NOLAN POVThe man in the silver-trimmed coat said my name as though he had waited a long time to say it. He did not sound surprised that I was alive. He sounded like someone ticking an item off a list.I kept my face neutral. "Should I know you?"His smile widened. "No. The man you replaced certainly did."Veyra's hand drifted toward her sword, and the emissary noticed at once. "Careful," he said mildly. "If you kill me, you will never learn why the Quiet Meridian chose you to murder him."Her fingers stopped an inch from the hilt. Her fury rolled through the bond like heat from a forge."I serve High Inquisitor Odran Pell," he went on, "and I have come with an offer. Surrender peacefully, Nolan, and we will remove the resonance bond, answer your questions about the transfer, and allow Miss Noxen to walk away unharmed."It was a very good offer, which was exactly what bothered me. "You know a lot about a bond that's an hour old.""We know a great deal about many things.""Then why bar
