Two hours earlier…

The matte black Bentley Continental GT Mulliner slid into the parking lot, its engine revving softly. As it approached, the crystal-cut LED headlights splintered the shimmering light like fractured diamonds. It slowly came to a halt, sitting under the club’s neon awning like a chasm in the night. Its velvet-textured paint swallowed the city's glare, until the car looked less like a vehicle and more like a solid iron beast.

The valet hesitated, afraid to touch the car's handle

Darlington stood still for several seconds, like a mannequin. His eyes were fixated on James Whitefield who seemed perfectly detached. He couldn't help but wonder how the man had gotten his hands on details of his life. They were supposed to be perfectly concealed by the Underground Synagogue.‘It seems they didn't do their job well…’ he thought to himself. ‘And right now two groups of people know my secrets… Jack Neuman and James Wuitefil…Two extremely manipulative and intelligent people.’His eyes drifted back to James who had a calculating smile on his face. The man gave off an unhinged aura, as if nothing in this world could bother him. But was that truly the case?Darlington felt that James was really bothered by something, or else he wouldn't have asked the police to bring him here. Jack Neuman was also troubling him.The thought of that made him smirk inwardly… He realized that he'd gotten leverage over James, in case the man decided to use and discard him like trash.“You've b

  • Chapter Sixty-Three: Allies in Sin

After getting all the information he wanted, Jack walked out of the interrogation chamber. He then said to Jane, “Make sure to call the police and turn him in.”Jane squinted, wondering what he was up to. All his actions so far have always ended in victory. Perhaps, he wanted to have Darlington arrested to achieve a particular goal. But what goal was that? Letting a dangerous enemy go wouldn't achieve anything… If not, it'd make things very difficult for Jack and everyone around. People's lives would be endangered.“Don't you want to sue him for attempted murder?” She asked. “I can do that and make sure he never comes out of prison.”Kate and Brandon nodded in agreement. They'd seen how dangerous Darlington Campbell was… A CIA ex-agent like him mustn't be turned into the police like that.“It's even better if we inform the CIA,” Kate said. “I've worked with them once—”“Just get him arrested,” Jack said, adjusting his cufflinks. “There's a reason I want to have him arrested.”“But you

The room was quiet for several seconds, the two men staring at each other. If not for Jack's wristwatch ticking, Darlington would have thought he'd gone deaf. Well, he almost did. Almost. Finally, Jack grabbed a chair and slid it in front of the private detective. He made sure to keep it some meters from the man, to avoid any possible attack. He then sat down and crossed his legs.“You're very cautious,” Darlington said. “I thought someone like you…who believes in his strength…would be confident in himself.”“Oh, I am confident,” Jack replied, raising an eyebrow. “But there's a difference between confidence and stupidity.”Darlington scoffed. “Right. So the rumours were also true. You're excellent in psychological warfare… No wonder you won against Winston, Damien, and Hugh.”“You see, that's only true from your perspective,” Jack said. “I'm not excellent at anything. I'm just good at utilizing things.”Darlington grunted. “And what's that supposed to mean?”“Nothing,” Jack answered.

  • Chapter Sixty-One: An Ex-agent in the Interrogation Chamber

Jack's eyelids quivered open, a groan escaping his lips. He squinted, adjusting to the light that hit his face. Soon, he opened his eyes slowly and saw Jane standing over him. His eyes drifted around and he saw that it was his bedroom.“You're finally awake, Sir,” Jane said, heaving a sigh of relief. “The doctor said you might not wake up till the next day.”He tried sitting up but felt a jolting pain in his arm. He winced and grabbed his arm, closing his eyes. When he opened them and looked at his arm, he saw that it was covered in a bandage. In fact, there were bandages on his head, right shoulder, and leg.“The impact of the fall caused some injuries,” Jane said. “The doctor said it's not severe so you should be back on your feet in a week.”“A week?” Jack's pupils dilated. Even though his tone was completely flat, his heart thumped speedily behind his chest. How could he stay in this condition for a week?! There were several things to do—plans to carry out! Besides, James Whitefie

Jack and Kate stepped into the massive hall, the gunfire becoming louder than ever. The former had the urge to grab his ears, but he didn't. Instead, he gritted his teeth and took cover behind an overturned piece of machinery covered in rust. The shattered skylights overhead filtered the harsh midday sun into sharp, dust-choked beams, illuminating a chaotic battlefield inside the cavernous husk of the abandoned Cowpea factory.Jack inhaled and coughed immediately, scrunching his face afterward. The air was thick with a suffocating mix of dust, rusted iron, and the sharp, chemical burn of gunsmoke. He wanted to sneak around, just like Jane was doing, but ended up crushing millions of shriveled black-eyed peas scattered across the concrete floor.Crunching sounds blended with the gunfire, but a few men close to him still heard. They all spun around, ignoring Brandon. There were at least eight others who could take him down. So far Brandon had only killed two people.‘It must be the damn

Kate drove to the North Gang District while staring at the Google map on the dashboard’s screen. Jane's location kept blinking and she realized they were close.Tightening her grip on the steering wheel, she tilted her head at Jack and said, “We're here at the Cowpea abandoned factory.”The SUV came to a stop in front of the abandoned factory. It was a massive building towering over every other building in the North Gang District. The walls had cracked and were covered with vines—a testament that it had been abandoned for a long period of time.Jack and Brandon walked out of the SUV toward the building. They'd expected the place to be guarded, but there was no one. The surroundings were eerily quiet and empty.Jack's eyes narrowed as he tilted his head at Kate, “Stay put and always ready.”“Yes, Boss!” She nodded firmly, compelled by her guilt-driven self.Meanwhile, Brandon's eyes swept over the surroundings cautiously as his right hand reached out to his hidden holster. He then walk
