"I don't like this guy," Valerie commented after Cain had walked away, she stared at him suspiciously while keeping Nelson closer to herself like a child in danger.

"Neither do I," Manchester replied,

"I just fear that he might do something to make this whole thing work in his favour...

"Like tamper with the result?" Valerie took the words right out of his mouth,

"I thought as much. Is there any way to avoid that?"

Manchester shook his head from side to side,

"If he is going to do it then I just don't think there's anything I can do to stop him, I can only prove that he tampers with the result after it is out. I trust the law, but not entirely."

"Would you like me to get my father involved, if it gets out of hand?" Valerie offered, she felt so sorry for Manchester because so far, she hadn't seen anything wrong with this man to make her friend dumped for some wealthier.

"He is not that powerful," She continued,

"But there is something he can do to help out in this si

After the samples from Manchester and Cain were taken, the young detective left immediately along with Valerie and Nelson. Valerie had a driver, but she asked him to go back, stating that Manchester would drop her back home after everything was complete. But the true reason she waited behind was because of what that mysterious lady had told her about this case. She just couldn't get it off her mind and needed to communicate it with Manchester, but not in front of all these people."Thank you so much Valerie for waiting, I'm sure you had a lot of things to do today that you gave up to be here." Manchester acknowledged her as soon as they got into the car. "It's okay," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper, Nelson was peacefully sleeping in her arms and she didn't want to risk waking him up."I'm off today, so it doesn't matter. And by the way, I needed to talk to you about something, I just needed us to speak privately."At those words, Manchester's heart skipped a beat."i

"Manchester!" Valerie snapped. "I think a peaceful negotiation with him might be a lot better. You could lose everything if you chose to fight with him. I don't mean this in a bad way but you can not match up with him in that level even if you know the law." Manchester's face fell, her words hurt but she was right, he wasn't as wealthy as Cain, nor as powerful. But he wasn't going to fold his arm and do nothing about it, and he also wasn't going to waste his time negotiating with a man who didn't seem interested. "I'm sorry," Valerie apologised, wishing that she never let those words off her lips. It isn't her intention to mock anyone of lower status and it has never been. "You are right," Manchester replied, "I can not match up to him, but at least I can keep my son safe, even if it is the last thing I do. Please, Valerie, I will hire a nanny, two nannies if you want me to, they'll take care of him while he's with you. You don't have to lift a finger, I just don't want him to b

“So can I,” Alex replied, the menacing grin on his face along with his messed-up brunette hair made him appear fierce, but Manchester wasn’t impressed. Before now, he was a well-trained military personnel, and the only reason he deviated into the investigation department was that Mel didn’t want to be married to him if he was going to constantly put his life at risk in the military.Manchester inched closer to Alex, his fist itching to release yet another punch, but he had to be careful to avoid killing him.“Why did you do it?” He asked, now standing only a few feet away from Alex.“I didn’t...“Lie!” Manchester cut him off and delivered yet another punch that Alex couldn’t dodge.“You are only this powerful because my hands aren’t free,” Alex yelled, groaning in pain as he tried to grab onto his hurting stomach.“If only I were free, you would have been dead by now.”“You are truly violent,” Manchester said and let out a broad smile. "Number thirteen, Haven Crescent," Manchester muttered as he peeped through the partially rolled-down car window. His eyes glance at the apartment, and the house number that hung near the gate. The apartment was magnificent, simple and classic from the outside, it was obvious that whoever lived there wasn't struggling, and then it occurred to him that Alex had said that it wasn't their home. With a long sigh, Manchester rolled up the tinted glass and walked out of the car. He wasn't alone; two cops were with him, and there were four others on standby in case of emergency. Manchester tapped the doorbell sign on the gate and waited; the gateman, a man in a white shirt and pants, stepped out and asked. "Who are you looking for?" Manchester flashed his ID immediately and replied, "Detective Duke, I would love to speak with the house owner immediately. If he delays or declines, we have a permit to search the house and wouldn't hesitate to do so." At his words, the gateman sneered, s

With a deep breath, Manchester dashed into the grand hallway, the echo of gunfire behind him fading beneath the pounding of his own heartbeat. His mind was locked. Every inch of this place screamed luxury, from the paintings in gilded frames to the marble floors, even a chandelier. But Manchester knew could smell the criminal acts that purchased them all.// System Notification: Six remaining hostiles detected. Two on the ground floor and four in the basement.//“System, keep me updated. I don’t want any surprises.” Manchester muttered, bracing himself for the fight he was about to experience. He had faith in the system's strength, but at Level 1, he believed that most of his efforts would be required. As if in response to his statement, the system highlighted a figure moving around the corner just ahead, so Manchester lowered his body and silently advanced. The man stepped out with a silenced pistol, but Manchester was faster. He grabbed a bronze statue from a side table and slammed

They arrived at the station, and all three men were immediately detained; Manchester couldn't believe how quickly he completed this task. Even Sophia Patel's disappearance took longer than a case that appeared to be more difficult. "I can't believe it," Detective Jameson uttered. This is probably the hundredth time he had made that statement, and each time he did, Manchester smiled. "It's for the people," Manchester said, sipping from the bottle of wine that stood on the table separating him from Jameson. He's had quite a hectic day, from the court to fighting with Alex to catching the others. Overall, the entire police department detained twelve men, excluding the trio that Manchester was focused on finding. He immediately wanted to rush in for Interrogation, but Jameson pulled him from the shoulder and forced him to the cafeteria. Bought some bottles of wine, one for himself, one for Manchester and one extra. "Relax," he said, "Seventy per cent of the work is done; no need to

"Okay, now that I am done drinking, and not getting drunk, I can deal with these ones," Manchester muttered, bracing himself for one of the longest Interrogation sessions he's going to have in a long time. Speaking with all four men individually and compiling their words to find out if they correlate seems like a lot of work, but he had two hours before it's six o'clock, so why not start now? "Alex," Manchester started with a smile, his eyes fixed on the young man who didn't believe he'd catch the others. "Let me start by saying, I did it! I caught your friends, all of them, in one piece. I don't just say things, I get them done." Alex sighed, his face fell with embarrassment; perhaps this was when the reality hit him in the face; he had been caught, and so were his friends. "Did you attack Hi n BYE on the evening of ... "Yes," Alex replied before Manchester could finish his words, "Yes, I did." Shocked by how quickly he responded, Manchester glanced at his partner, Sop

After a long night spent drinking at the bar, Manchester had to wake up and face reality once more, and that is the legal case in hand. Of course, he didn't have the intelligence to crack the case open, but that's where the I-mode system comes into play. He spent a few minutes staring at the system's screen, his dashboard showed that he only needed 400 more exp to unlock the sixth and seventh case. And since the paternal dispute happens to be the fourth case, he desperately wants to unlock the other two before he gets to case number five. The whole reason why he's been thinking about this is because he wanted to spend three hundred exp to boost his intelligence. He could use the detective clue ticket, but from what he has seen so far, it wouldn't give him the immediate results he wanted. After a lot of consideration, Manchester decided that it was better to save his points and use the clue ticket instead, the last one remaining. "I hope I don't regret this," he uttered, befor

  • 66. I- would have to be dead to accept Mel back into my life

9 pm Manchester invited a close friend, Jesse, for a drink and a chat. As expected, he disclosed everything that had happened to him, while leaving the system out of the conversation. "She took him shopping!" Jesse exclaimed in shock as Manchester narrated today's incident to him, "She loves that kid more than she loves you, Man." "They even got matching pyjamas," he added, followed by a humourless chuckle, "They are having a lot of fun together, at least she likes him and isn't bothered at all to take care of him. Nelson even calls him mommy, I've told the little kid to stop that, but what does he know?" "Just marry her," Jesse commented, immediately followed by a heartfelt laughter, "I'm just kidding, but women like her are rare, but you are not that kind of guy, that I know." "No, no, absolutely not," Manchester shook his head from side to side before tightening his grip on the beer mug and taking a sip, "I'm not the kind of guy that will move on with his wife's friend be

  • 65. I- think you love this baby more than I do

As Manchester stood before the lady who was now back home, his heart was crushed as he watched the tears drop from her eyes. In as much as he wanted her to get some answers on her husband's whereabouts, he didn't expect it to be a picture of their burnt car with a statement confirming that he died in flames. "I am so sorry," he muttered because it was the only thing he could say. Certainly, nothing can console a woman who learns that she lost her husband to this kind of accident three months later. Both her kids stood next to her, their hands on their mother's shoulder while they stared at the pictures in her hand. Tears clouded their eyes, and they trickled down their chins at intervals. "He shouldn't have left," she said, "He should have just stayed at home; he would be alive today, wouldn't he?" While the family grieved, Manchester excused himself and returned to his car, parked in front of their apartment. He sighed heavily after taking a seat behind the steering wheel.

  • 64. I- found the subject's car

The entire crew, consisting of over thirty policemen in cars and motorcycles, went in search of the car that Manchester had shown them. They followed the alternative route, which they assumed the restaurant's owner had taken, and a search along that area is nearly similar to searching for a needle in a haystack. Both sides of the road were covered in thick forest, stretching a few hundred kilometres. Upward on the left, which mostly consisted of rocks, and downwards on the right. It'll take a twenty-minute drive through this lonely path before getting to the highway, which is why most people avoid it. Usually, the road is closed down for most of the year due to how lonely it is but it reopened from November to February when it gets a lot busier. Another reason it was closed down was because of numerous reports of car theft and robbery along the path, which is not a surprise. "It has been over two hours," Manchester sighed heavily, "No signs of his car anywhere yet; we've drive

  • 63. I- promised his wife an answer

"So tell me, where did he say he was going?" Asked Manchester; he couldn't care less whether she put her hopes on him, after all, he couldn't be one hundred per cent sure that he could solve the case. "To the restaurant, towards the evening," she replied, "He said he wanted to see how it was doing and check on the kitchen wares that needed to be fixed. I remembered the manager called to tell him that one of the cookers was faulty, so he was going to check that out." "Alright," Manchester nodded and noted that down, "And did he call anyone else before leaving?" "I'm not sure," she replied, "If he was going to call anyone at all, he'd call our repair man to come and take a look at the cooker and get it fixed, but he certainly didn't make that call at home, maybe he did it on his way, I don't know." "Hmm," Manchester muttered and took another note, "How long is the drive from your home to the restaurant ." "Ten minutes, it can be shorter, because we live really close to

  • 62. I- am willing to give you answers

Manchester wasn't sure how to begin that investigation; he left the court feeling overwhelmed, which is surprising, especially knowing that he is a detective and solving mysteries is what he does. On his way to the station, his mind was occupied by negative thoughts, like what if Nelson wasn't truly his son and he had no choice but to let the kid go? What if the result were true?Suddenly, his phone buzzed with a notification, and while driving, Manchester picked it up with his left hand and stole a glance at the screen. "The four culprits will stand before the jury in a week, they will be detained until then. Once again, thank you so much, Mr. Manchester, for this; your name would appear on the headline newspaper in no time." As Manchester read through the messages, a smile crept upon his face, but just then he realised that it wasn't over yet. He still has to find the restaurant owners to mark this task complete and get paid. But he had no clues to work with, and with the c

  • 61. I- am the one you want

"Hello, who is this?" Mel asked; her tone was soft and welcoming. She laid back on the bed, wrapped in thick duvet, after giving up her plans of going to the mall. "You can't tell from my voice, Mel, can you?" asked the voice from the other side of the phone. Mel raised a brow, sat up and put the phone on speaker. "If I could tell who you were from your voice then I wouldn't be asking." "I'll make this introduction very short, Mel; this is Cain, Cain Hycinth; remember me now?" Mel's jaws dropped in shock, her eyes glued to the phone screen as if she had seen a ghost. Just a few days ago, Manchester had called her concerning this man, and now she is receiving a call from Cain himself; what does he want? "What do you want?" She cut straight to the point, "I don't even want to know how you got my number; just tell me what the hell you want. Let's end this call as soon as possible. I'm pretty sure that you have succeeded in taking Nelson away from Manchester and you want to rob it

  • 60. I- bought you that time

The courtroom was thick with silence, the kind of silence that weighed in Manchester's chest like a damped wood. His heart raced with every passing second as they all waited for the judge to come in. Once she was in, Manchester was directed to the defendant's table; he took a deep breath and held tightly onto its frame while tapping his foot on the floor at intervals. Across the room, Cain sat with a smug, his arms were folded as he anticipated the result. The judge leaned forward, her expression unreadable as always. She adjusted her spectacles, and after the introduction was made by the bailiff, she read from the paper on her desk. "After a thorough examination of Paternity test conducted by an independent laboratory, and in consideration of testimonies and submitted documentation, the court finds that the child in question, Nelson Wilfred Duke, is not the biological son of Mr Manchester Duke." These words hit Manchester on the chest like an atomic bomb, he felt the explosion in

When he was close by, Roger noticed a car that had just driven out of where he was going, and he couldn't help but wonder if Valerie was inside it, and with who? But then again, he just kept driving until he parked at the front of her apartment and stepped out. This was the first time he visited her without a gift, not even a flower. He knew that she would ignore them anyway and probably not even let him into the house. Ding dong The sound of the doorbell was heard from inside as Roger pushed the button. He took a deep breath and waited until she unlocked the door and opened it "Valerie," he muttered with his jaws dropped in shock, not because he hadn't seen her in a while, but because there was a child in her hand. 'could she have been married without my consent, long enough to have a child already. But it's only been two months since I last saw her, so this can't be her child, then whose?' "What are you doing here?" Valerie frowned, "Who gave you my address... oh damm
