Meanwhile, in the elevator, Edward and Adriana quickly pulled away from each other.

Standing inches away from Edward suddenly made Adriana feel shy, the air around them felt suffocating.

Unlike the picture she had, the man had a tall masculine build. Though he looked tired, his handsome features still stood out under the light.

His shoulders were so broad that she imagined how it would feel to lie on them. But she quickly cautioned herself he was the son of the man who had destroyed her family.

Focus, Adriana! Focus on the plan. She took a deep breath.

An hour ago at the airport

Adriana raised her head to watch the little stars shining up above, the wind blowing her hair violently. The stars, she heard, were dead people watching over their families. Tears welled up in her eyes at the thought of her parents watching her as one of those stars. It had been almost three years since it all happened.

A car pulled over, honking in front of her.

"Ma'am, welcome back to Goldmere." A man in his twenties opened the passenger door of a limousine. He stepped out, took her luggage, and arranged it inside the booth.

Adriana brushed away the tears threatening to roll down her eyes with the tip of her finger. She took a deep breath, then suddenly put on a deadly face, pushing the emotion aside. She was here to hunt the man who had caused her parents’ deaths and left her sister in a vegetative state.

"What news do you have?" she said, entering the car with Marcus.

The driver sat at the front behind the steering wheel, while she sat beside Marcus, her personal assistant, at the back. She and Marcus had been friends ever since she traveled abroad at age five, he was the first friend she made. They had remained close even after college. When that incident happened, he was there. He had helped plan everything for her from the establishment of her company to the information about her parents' killer. She already had their pictures, their names imprinted in her mind.

"Just like the plan," Marcus replied. "The disinherited son is not like the father. I suggest you befriend him let's start from there. For now, you need to rest. I'll brief you on anything else tomorrow after the meeting."

Adriana simply nodded.

The drive to the hotel was quiet afterward, allowing Adriana to look out through the window. Goldmere had really changed a lot, unlike twenty years ago when she was last here.

"How do you plan on me befriending him?" she finally broke the silence. "You know what? Send him an invite tomorrow. I want him to come to my welcome party." She was eager to bring justice for her family ASAP.

But on stepping into the lobby of Goldmere Grand, she saw them… the two sons. The heavens were in support of her plan she almost jumped in excitement. At that point, all that registered in her mind was the urge to choke that bastard Ethan with her long nails. He was the cause of everything if he had let Camila be...

Seeing how he was embarrassing his brother, Adriana knew there was no better time to befriend Edward than now. Fate had offered her gold on a platter she wasn't going to let it slip by.

...

"Hello... Why did you help me? We've not met before, right?" Edward tapped her shoulder lightly. He had been talking to her for some minutes now, but she seemed lost in thought.

"Erm... what did you say?" Adriana stammered, coming back to reality.

Edward repeated "What you did back there, why did you do it? Why did you help me?"

"Nothing... Can't I just help someone?" Adriana looked away, flinging her hair backward.

Edward caught it. She was not telling the truth she couldn't even keep a straight face. Was this the same woman who had acted like she knew him so well back there?

Edward knew better nothing comes for free, People rarely helped without expecting something in return.

So he wasn't going to believe some crappy lie of "nothing."

Either the woman knew who he was already, or something else was going on. He could feel it in his instinct.

Ding

The elevator sounded, announcing their arrival at their destination.

Edward started walking toward the door. He wasn't going to force her to say anything. He would just keep an eye on her. He swiped the key card, and the door swung open.

Adriana walked behind him, her heels announcing every step. She found herself staring at his broad back as he walked.

This man is going to be the death of me. She rubbed her palms together.

On stepping into the room, Adriana shut the door behind her. She needed his help, so she decided coming clean was best. He wasn't on good terms with his family, so he wouldn't even tell his father. And even if he did, his father might not want to hear him out. Or worse still, that bastard would know she had come to take revenge on him.

Mustering some courage, she finally spoke "You asked why I helped you, right? I need your help. I need your help to destroy Caleb Gavin your disowned father. That man destroyed my family, and I will kill him!”

  • Zhenyu blood detected

Edward scanned the environment. Thirty men. Maybe more. If that man had told the truth, Caleb was hiding something big. Edward could read these men at a glance, they weren't ordinary security guards. They were trained assassins. The kind who killed for a living, not the ones who fought or protected. The men he had taken down at Ethan's place were amateurs compared to this. And they were there to kill him. One thing was certain now he wasn't just some orphan. Caleb must have killed his parents. And he'd sent these men to finish the job, to bury the truth for good. Edward prayed silently. Not for a miracle just for a chance to survive long enough to find answers. But he knew the odds. Against thirty trained killers with guns and machetes? One percent. Maybe less. His eyes darted to their hands. Handguns Rifles Machetes. Fighting them meant death. Running was not even an option. So he just stood there, cycling in the center surrounded by a circle of huge, masked men. Then an
