“Edward, you are useless! Do you know what you've done?” Ava fume as she paced in the sitting room, her heels clicking against the marble floor.

They had just got off the phone with Ethan. He was in rage telling them Edward had come there to cause trouble not only injured his security men but also had the nerve to hit him. He swore to deal with Edward before ending the call in anger.

When Edward walked through the door, she spun on him. “Ethan will never let this go! He promised to make life difficult for you in Goldmere. you do not pity yourself? How could you do this?”

Sofia clapped her hands together, each clap sharp as a slap. “You had the guts to hit your brother? He will come for you, Edward. And before then, I cannot accommodate you under my roof. You must leave. Ethan cannot find you here.”

Ava rushed at him, her fists pounding against his chest. "How could you make things so difficult? He wasn't going to do anything except be with me. But now you've angered him, and he won't let this slide. He won't let you stay here in peace."

Edward said nothing. He moved past them and took the stairs two at a time. His face showed no trace of fear. Instead, a victorious smirk tugged at the corner of his lips.

He knew Ethan. Knew how his brother wielded power like a weapon. The only power Ethan had? money. And he used it to crush anyone who crossed him. Edward had heard it all, everything that Ethan did to that girl, he heard everything while he was abroad. How Caleb used money and connections to sweep it all under the carpet that was where the whole issue started between Caleb and Edward.

They used to be close once, brothers who trusted each other. Now Edward expected Ethan to bite back, to try to frustrate him at every turn. He didn't care as long as he had put that little man in his place.

He had some cash left money he had saved for last night's outing with Ava. Since that didn't happen, he still had it. He was leaving, anyway. Not because he feared Ethan, but because he had already decided to leave Goldmere for good. He would go back abroad, to the place he had studied, and start over. He had been saving to leave with Ava, but that plan was dead. Now it was just him. He would fight for his life, for his future. He would make those who treated him so badly regret their actions.

He dashed into the bedroom, while Ava chased after him, still yelling.

"I no longer love you, Edward. We will divorce before the week runs out. I can't do this anymore. Like my mother said, you have to leave this house. Remember, legally it belongs to her you bought it for her, didn't you? So you have to leave. You can't stay under the same roof as us."

Edward pulled his backpack from the wall. In the next seconds, he yanked clothes from his wardrobe and shoved them inside.

"You can act like you're not hearing me, for all I care." Ava's voice turned nastier. "What kind of man are you? You keep making me regret marrying you. And just once that I decide to be with another man, one who can actually take care of me, you get pissed? Some men watch their wife in bed with another man and do not say a word. Because they know they can't take care of her, so they let other men have her. At least those men are happy she's still married to them. But you? Who do you think you are to get angry and cause problems?"

"Don't you dare, Ava." Edward dropped his backpack and spun to face her. His voice came low and dangerous. "you do not have any shame?"

He would not take that. To think she expected him to stay after everything even making reference to men watching their wives get fucked by another man right before their eyes and saying nothing because they had no money. That was completely out of line. He refused to let her speak such rubbish where he could hear it.

"I am not a puppet. I don't take nonsense just because I don't have money or connections." He held her gaze. "And for the divorce, trust me Ava I will divorce you before you do. So expect papers by tomorrow."

Edward said it with such confidence you might believe he had a lawyer on retainer. He didn't. He hadn't even started the process. He knew it was nearly impossible for divorce papers to be ready by morning. But he didn't care.

He was the kind of man who hardly ever loved. Ava was his first love. When he saw her two years ago, he fell hard and fast, pushing their marriage through swiftly. Now all he felt for her was hatred. He wondered if she had ever loved him at all, or if she had only pretended because of what he had back then. He wanted nothing to do with her ever again. Her affair with his younger brother was the last straw.

Ava curled back. Edward had never spoken to her like that. The way he talked about divorcing her first, it broke something in her. She hadn't expected that.

Edward opened the cupboard and pulled out a stack of dollar notes. He began counting. Part of it was what he had been saving for their relocation together. The rest was meant for their two-year wedding anniversary outing.

"Don't tell me you are this bold because of that change you've got, Edward." Sofia had followed them into the room. She leaned against the doorframe, smirking. "That won't even last you a week."

Edward zipped his backpack all his belongings inside now, not that he had owned much more than a few clothes anyway, then he walked toward the door.

"Like I said before," he said without looking back, "expect a divorce in the morning."

He strolled out of the room, down the stairs, and out of the house.

Behind him, mother and daughter stood frozen, mouths wide open in shock especially Sofia, who expected that he was going to beg since he had no where to go even with the money she saw him with moments ago, can't even rent a decent hotel for the night.
