It was a quiet coffee shop, playing old Kathan folk songs that drifted gently through the dim, yellow light.

Laura was sitting by the window. On the table was a cup of coffee and a single, vibrant local rose in a small vase.

I walked towards her, looking at the face that seemed even softer under the warm light.

She stood up and gave me the same sweet smile I remembered so well.

I nodded and sat down.

The whole time, neither of us said a word. No "You're here," or "How have you been?"—none of that pointless chatter.

"Sir, what can I get for you?"

A Kathan waiter in an embroidered uniform came over and asked politely in his native tongue.

"Do you have Ayaran Elephant Lager?" I asked back in Kathan.

"Yes, we do, sir."

"One bottle, please. Thank you."

"Right away, sir."

After the waiter left, Laura seemed to have found her opening. She smiled. "I almost forgot how well you speak Kathan."

I managed a small smile. "That's understandable. It would be strange if you hadn't forgotten."

"Yeah.""Oh my gosh, I'm so, so sorry! I love to sleep. Once I'm holding a pillow, I forget everything. You haven't been waiting long, have you?"I glanced at my phone. "Not long. Just two hours. Your flight takes off in a little over two and a half hours.""What?" Wendy froze, then shot up from the bed like a rabbit. "I'm so late, so late!" she cried, shuffling into the bathroom."Don't rush too much. It's only a fifteen-minute drive to the airport from here."I then noticed that Wendy was a bit clumsy. Her luggage was a mess, and her things were scattered everywhere. In the end, I had to be the one to shake out her blanket to find her headphones.By the time she had washed up, changed, and gathered all her things, half an hour had passed—and that was without putting on any makeup. After a quick breakfast, we left for the airport. By the time we arrived, there was only an hour until takeoff.I helped her get her boarding pass. As she was about to go through security, she stood in fron

"Kian…""No more talk. Just listen to me."Rocco sounded deflated. "Alright. But don't send the money just yet. Let me find out how much it'll cost first. If it's not too much, I can probably cover it. By the way, where did you get three thousand dollars?""Break-up money from my ex-girlfriend.""Whoa, seriously? Which ex? Introduce me, maybe I can make three grand too.""Get lost.""Heh heh. Alright, I gotta get back to work. Kian, if anything happens, call me. You hear me? Make sure you call.""Yeah, yeah. Go on."After hanging up with Rocco, I took a shower, then lit a smoke and thought quietly about how to deal with Gavin Price. Before I'd even finished my smoke, I suddenly thought of Wendy. I found her number and gave her a call.It rang for a while before she answered, her voice sleepy. "Kian? What's up?""Uh… nothing. Nothing. Just wanted to see if you were asleep."Wendy was quiet for a moment, then asked, "Are you calling to check if I'm okay because you're worried, or are you

  • Chapter 38: Making a Plan

"Kian Shaw, you stop right there! We're not done talking."Ava’s commanding voice echoed from behind me.I turned and looked at her, my expression blank. "What else do you want?"Her face was like ice. "I trust Gavin's character. He's known you for one day, and he's spent most of his time in Katha with me. He wouldn't do something like what you've described. You must be mistaken. As for those men who came after you, was it Caleb Vance who sent them? Or did you provoke them yourself?""Heh. Believe whatever you want."I wasn't going to waste my breath explaining. There was no point trying to reason with someone so self-righteous.Bansa had no reason to lie. He said the one who paid him was a young, rich man from Astoria, but it wasn't Caleb.Besides Gavin Price, I couldn't think of anyone else who would be willing to spend that kind of money to mess with me. Two million Kathan currency was only about forty thousand dollars. That was pocket change for Gavin. He must have known Caleb alr

  • Chapter 37: Paying the Price

Her words broke the awkwardness, and I managed a smile. "Don't worry. We can talk about that when you decide you want a boyfriend."She let out a satisfied "hmph" and went back to drying her hair, her head still bowed.I found something else to do, pulling out my phone to book her a flight for the next day. It wasn't easy, but I found one. After that, there was nothing left for me to do. I probably shouldn't be lingering in a young woman's room.It was time to go. She was just too pure, too flawless. So, I stood up to leave. At the door, I checked the lock again to make sure it was secure, then couldn't help but turn back. "Remember, don't open the door for anyone until I come get you tomorrow morning to take you to the airport.""Okay," Wendy's voice was soft.I couldn't think of any other excuses to stay, so I just smiled at her and turned to leave."Be careful," she called out from behind me.I took the opportunity to glance back at her one more time. "Don't worry. I'm a good fight

  • Chapter 36: Don't Hit On Me

"Why should I believe you?""You don't have to. But you don't have a choice."Bansa didn't argue. He just stood there, angry and tense, as Wendy finished recording the video, making sure to get all of his men in the shot.I had Wendy open my messenger app and send the video to a friend back home—the only friend I could truly trust, someone I met in prison.I even recorded a voice message, explaining what the video was for.Putting the phone away, I glanced behind me. "Mr. Bansa, you can tell your men to clear a path now. My friend and I would like to go back and get some rest."Bansa hesitated for a moment, but finally told his men to make way.His men didn't gather in one spot, though. They spread out in all directions, still forming a large circle around us.I paid them no mind. Keeping one arm locked around Bansa's neck and the shard of screen protector pressed against his artery, I started backing away slowly down the street, pulling him with me.Wendy stuck close by my side witho

The thing is, I didn't have a weapon. Not even a key or a pen. Just my hotel key card, wallet, and phone.Wait, my phone. The corner of my screen protector was shattered. At this point, I had to use whatever I could to try and fight my way out of this. With that thought, I pulled out my phone. I slid a fingernail under the edge of the shattered screen protector and flashed the phone at Bansa."Mr. Bansa, the videos are on this phone. I can give it to you. I can also delete all the copies, including the one with Avara. But on one point, I'm sorry. I have to keep my leg."Bansa's voice was cold. "You don't have a choice. I took the money, so I have to do the job. I have to break your leg.""If that's how it's going to be, then I'm sorry. If you so much as touch my leg, I'll hand the videos to the police tomorrow. If I go down, I'm taking you with me.""You dare? I'll make sure you don't leave Ayara alive. I could finish you right now," Bansa threatened, his face twisting with menace.I
