"Spire Rats," Lyra spat, the tip of her blade vibrating as the swarm surged forward. "Don't just stand there, Cole. Move!"

"I’m moving, I’m moving!" Ethan shouted, scrambling backward as a rodent the size of a bulldog skittered across the ceiling. "Do they bite? Please tell me they don't bite."

"They don't just bite, they dissolve your skin with acidic saliva," Lyra said, parrying a lunging creature with a sharp, metallic clink. "Any 'elite' combat tips, or are we just going to dance?"

"Right. Combat. Got it," Ethan gritted his teeth, forcing the System to flood his nerves again.

The familiar, burning electric jolt hit his spine. He lunged forward, his mind calculating the exact arc required for a skull-crushing strike, but his body betrayed him. Instead of a lethal blow, his foot caught on a patch of slick moss. He stumbled, arms windmilling, and accidentally clocked the nearest rat with his shoulder instead of his fist. The creature squealed, tumbling into the muck.

"Nice… pivot?" Lyra grunted, kicking a lunging rat into the tunnel wall with effortless grace.

"Calculated," Ethan wheezed, his heart hammering against his ribs. "That was totally a tactical shoulder-check."

"Keep it up, Tactical-Steve. You’re doing great at being a human shield."

A swarm of smaller rats erupted from the shadows, chittering in a chaotic, high-pitched chorus. Ethan tried to mimic a defensive sweep he’d seen in his memory, but his knees buckled halfway through. He ended up collapsing into a crouch, barely avoiding a spray of green sludge that hissed against the brickwork where his head had been a second ago.

"I’m really not built for this!" Ethan yelled, frantically swiping his pipe at the air to keep the vermin at bay.

"Then grow some muscle or start praying," Lyra snapped, her back pressed against his as they formed a desperate, rotating defense. "On three, we push toward that alcove. One. Two—"

"Wait, wait! That one’s huge!"

A massive alpha rat, its fur matted with toxic slime and its eyes glowing a sickly, pulsating crimson, lunged from the rafters toward Lyra’s blind spot. She didn't see it—she was too busy pinning a smaller scavenger-beast to the floor.

"Lyra, look out!" Ethan didn't think. He dove.

His body, starved and weak, felt like a lead weight, but momentum carried him forward. He slammed into her, his shoulder catching her waist, and they tumbled across the wet floor, rolling hard until they crashed into the recessed darkness of a dry alcove.

"Oof!" Lyra groaned, the breath knocked out of her as they landed in a heap.

Ethan scrambled to pin her down—not to harm her, but to shield her—as the alpha rat skidded into the space they had just vacated, its claws gouging deep furrows into the concrete.

"Are you insane?" Lyra hissed, her face inches from his, her eyes wide with shock. "You could have gotten yourself killed!"

"Better me than the person who actually knows how to survive down here," Ethan panted, his chest heaving. "Besides, you owe me a drink if we make it out of this."

"You’re unbelievable," she whispered, her gaze flickering from his panicked eyes to the hulking beast circling the entrance of their alcove. "Look at it. It’s waiting for us to bolt."

"Any ideas, partner? My 'Elite Combat' mode just went on lunch break."

"My knife is out of reach," she muttered, her fingers twitching against her hip. "Wait. Look at its underbelly. When it rears up to charge, it’s exposed."

"And then?"

"And then we pray you don't trip again."

The alpha rat let out a guttural, wet hiss, its jaws dripping with acid. It coiled its muscular frame, preparing to launch itself into the cramped space.

"It’s coming," Ethan whispered, his grip tightening on his rusted pipe.

"On my count," Lyra murmured, her voice steadying. "Now!"

She shoved him hard to the right. Ethan didn't resist; he lunged, not with grace, but with the desperate, jagged intent of a man with nothing left to lose. He jammed the pipe toward the beast, catching it squarely in its soft, exposed belly. It screeched, a sound that tore through the tunnel like a serrated blade.

Before it could retaliate, Ethan followed up with a clumsy, heavy-footed kick that sent the creature teetering back, its claws scrabbling for purchase before it toppled over the edge of the tunnel walkway, sliding into the rushing, dark sewer current below.

The chittering of the smaller swarm died down, the remaining rats scattering back into the dark as their leader vanished.

Silence reclaimed the tunnel, thick and heavy.

Ethan collapsed, his back hitting the wet brick of the alcove. He was drenched in sweat and sewage, his lungs screaming for oxygen. Beside him, Lyra slid down, her breathing ragged, her tactical gear torn at the shoulder.

For a long moment, nobody spoke. The only sound was the distant trickle of waste water and the erratic, frantic beating of their two hearts.

Slowly, Lyra turned her head. Her face was smudged with dirt, her hair matted, but her eyes were fixed on Ethan with an intensity that made the air feel suddenly, impossibly thin.

"You," she started, her voice barely a whisper, "are the most infuriating, reckless, and bizarre man I have ever met."

"I try," Ethan managed, his voice cracking. He tried to pull back, but his movement was limited by the cramped space. He found himself effectively pinned in the corner, with Lyra’s hand resting against his chest to steady herself.

She didn't pull away. Instead, she leaned in, her gaze dropping to his lips before snapping back to his eyes. The adrenaline from the fight hadn't faded; it had transformed into something sharp, electric, and dangerous.

"Who are you, Ethan?" she asked, her voice dropping to that same low, velvet hum he had used on her earlier. "Because you aren't just a civilian. And you definitely aren't just 'Steve'."

Ethan stared into the dark, swirling depths of her eyes, his pulse jumping. He opened his mouth to lie, but the words died as he felt the warmth of her breath against his skin.

"If I told you," he murmured, his voice thick with a sudden, overwhelming tension, "would you still look at me like that?"

Lyra’s fingers tightened slightly against his shirt, her knuckles pale. "Maybe I’m waiting for the truth to decide."

The shadows in the tunnel seemed to press in on them, narrowing the world down to just the two of them, breath to breath, heart to heart. Then, from the darkness behind them, a soft, distinct click—the sound of a weapon safety being disengaged—echoed through the silence.

Lyra’s eyes widened. She didn't move, but her entire body went rigid.

"Don't turn around," she whispered, her voice a ghost of a sound. "We aren't alone."
