The click of the safety behind them was loud enough to stop a heart.
"Don't turn around," Lyra whispered, her lips barely moving against the shell of Ethan's ear. Her hand remained pressed against his chest, but her muscles had coiled into a deadly, kinetic spring. "Slowly. Toward the ladder."
"Who is it?" Ethan breathed, his voice cracking.
"Doesn't matter. Just move."
They peeled away from each other, a silent, fluid motion born of sudden terror. They scrambled up a rusted utility ladder, lungs burning, until they broke through a maintenance hatch into the hollowed-out lobby of a decaying apartment complex. The air was stale, tasting of ozone and dead dreams.
"Keep it down," Lyra hissed, pushing him into a corner behind a stack of rotted, moth-eaten mattresses. "They’re still down there, but they’re not following yet."
Ethan slid to the floor, his head spinning. "You were going to kill them, weren't you?"
Lyra leaned back against the wall, her chest heaving. She reached into a hidden pocket, pulling out a small, jagged bandage. "I was going to try. Being dead is bad for my schedule. Why? Are you feeling bad for the guys who want your head on a platter?"
"Hardly," Ethan wheezed. "It’s just... you’re terrifying when you’re quiet."
"And you're surprisingly decent at not dying when you're being an idiot," she retorted, tossing the bandage at his chest. "Patch yourself up. You’re bleeding through your shirt."
Ethan looked down. A dark stain was blooming across his ribs. "That was from the grate drop. I didn't even notice."
"Adrenaline is a hell of a drug," Lyra murmured, her eyes softening just a fraction. She moved closer, her hands moving with practiced, efficient grace as she took the bandage from him. "Hold still. If you keep twitching, I’m going to make you regret it."
"You're very bossy for someone currently hiding in a sewer-rat-infested apartment," Ethan chuckled, though his breath hitched when her fingers brushed his skin.
"I’m alive. That makes me the boss," she said, her tone dropping, the sharp edges of her sarcasm blurring into something else. She looked up, her gaze locking onto his. "Why did you save me? In the tunnel. You’re not a fighter. You would’ve had a better chance if you’d just let the rat take me."
"I don't know," Ethan said honestly. "Maybe I’m tired of seeing people die. Or maybe I just didn't want to be alone in this dump."
Lyra paused, the bandage hovering over his wound. "You’re a strange one, Ethan—or Cole, or whoever you really are. You talk like you’ve been asleep for a century."
"Maybe I have been," he muttered.
"Don't joke about that. Thirty years ago, we had a city. A real one. People lived, they loved, they didn't have to worry about acid-spitting rats," she said, her voice turning brittle. "Then the Betrayer happened."
Ethan felt his stomach drop. "The Betrayer?"
"Ethan. The man who brought the end," she spat the name like a curse. "He had access to the central grid. He was supposed to be our savior. Instead, he fried the thermal shields. The monsters poured in before the first alarm even finished ringing. He disappeared, and we got left with the ashes."
"What if he didn't mean to?" Ethan asked, his voice barely a whisper. "What if it was a mistake?"
"A mistake?" Lyra let out a harsh, jagged laugh. "My brother was on the surface when those shields went down. He didn't get a mistake. He got vaporized. There is no 'oops' for genocide."
Ethan felt the weight of her words like a physical blow. The guilt was suffocating—a cold, heavy ghost sitting in his lungs. "You hate him that much?"
"I don't just hate him," she said, her eyes turning into shards of flint. "I hunt him. Every day is just another day closer to putting a knife in his throat. If I ever find that coward, I won't just kill him. I’ll make sure he understands exactly what he took from us."
Ethan turned away, his heart hammering against his ribs. "Maybe he's already dead. Maybe he's been dead for thirty years."
"Then I’ll dig him up just to kill him again," she whispered.
The air in the room grew heavy, charged with a tension that had nothing to do with the war outside. Ethan wanted to tell her. He wanted to blurt out his name, to explain the stasis pod, the System, the terrifying gap in his memory. But the look in her eyes—the raw, bottomless grief—silenced him.
"You're trembling," she said, her voice softening as she pulled back.
"It’s cold," he lied.
"Yeah. It’s always cold in the ruins."
Suddenly, the floor beneath them lurched. A low, rhythmic thrumming vibrated through the foundation, rattling the window frames until the glass shattered inward. Dust rained down from the ceiling, choking the air.
"What was that?" Ethan scrambled to his feet.
Lyra was at the window in a heartbeat, her hand on her hilt. "Get down!"
Outside, a sleek, matte-black scavenger drone hovered in the dead of night, its searchlight cutting through the smog like a surgical laser. It pivoted, the red lens sweeping the building’s facade.
"Thermal scan active," a mechanical voice droned from the street below. "Searching for heat signatures."
"They’re back," Lyra whispered, her face pale. "And they've got active tracking now."
"We're exposed," Ethan said, watching as the light crept across the floor toward their feet.
Lyra grabbed a nearby heavy, water-soaked blanket from the pile of debris. "Move! Into the corner! Now!"
She slammed them both against the wall, throwing the wet fabric over their heads. "Don't move. Don't breathe. The moisture will mask our core temp for a few seconds. That’s all we get."
Ethan was pinned against her, the damp wool pressing them into each other. He could feel her heart racing, a frantic staccato against his own.
"They're scanning the wall," she breathed against his neck, her voice barely a tremor.
Outside, the drone’s light hit the window, turning the room into a blinding, white-hot space. The drone’s engine whined, shifting gears, hovering right outside the shattered glass.
"Target detected," the machine announced.
Heavy, metallic footsteps echoed on the staircase outside the room. Someone was coming up.
Lyra gripped his hand, her knuckles white. "If they find us, you run. Don't look back."
"Not happening," Ethan whispered, his hand tightening around hers.
The door to the apartment groaned as a heavy boot kicked it off its hinges. The light from the drone swept inches from their faces, illuminating the dust motes in the air.
"Check the corner," a voice growled from the doorway.
The searchlight stopped. It settled right on the blanket.

Chapter 28: Pushing MetalThe silence that followed the engine’s final, pathetic gasp was louder than the roar of the cylinders had ever been. It was a thick, heavy silence—the kind that only existed in places meant to kill you."Tell me that was just a vapor lock," Ethan said. His voice was steady, but his eyes were locked on the dashboard."It was a vapor lock," Kaelen repeated, his hands still white-knuckling the steering wheel. "Also, the tank is empty, the fuel pump is shredded, and we’re sitting in the middle of a literal frying pan.""So, not a vapor lock.""We’re bone dry, Ethan. Not a drop. Not a sniff. Not even a greasy smear in the lines." Kaelen slammed his palms against the wheel, the sound echoing flatly in the cramped cab. "I told you! I told you we were pushing the RPMs too high!""If we hadn't pushed, the Syndicate enforcers would have picked us up five kilometers ago.""And now we’re just corpses in waiting! The pedal’s touching the rusted-out floorboards!" Kaelen yelled back, white-knuckling the steering wheel as the truck lurched over a deep fissure in the salt-crusted earth. "We’re losing compression in three cylinders! Ethan, this isn't a long-haul vehicle! It’s a yard dog! It was never meant to cross the flats!""It’s what we have! Adjust the mixture!""With what? My hopes and dreams? There isn't even a knob for that!"Ethan turned his attention away from the dashboard and back to the heap of blankets in the backseat. Lyra’s breathing had turned into a rhythmic, wet rattle that set his teeth on edge. Her skin was a translucent, sickly grey, mapped with veins that pulsed with an angry, fluorescent violet light."Lyra? Can you hear me?""The... the vents are closed," she whispered, her eyes rollin

Chapter 26: Heavy Metal Escape"Left! Go left!" Kaelen’s voice cracked as a bullet whined off the rusted lip of a dumpster, showering them with orange sparks."I am going left!" Ethan grunted, half-carrying, half-dragging Lyra. "Which left, Kaelen? The one with the armored patrol or the one with the cliff?""The motor pool!" Kaelen shoved Ethan toward a narrow gap between two warehouse units. "Third bay. They keep the logistics runners there. Most are stripped for parts, but some still have juice!"Ethan didn’t argue. Chapter 24: The Structural Weakness
Chapter 24: The Structural Weakness"The air is getting thin in here, Ethan," Lyra whispered. She leaned her head against the corrugated steel wall, her breath coming in ragged, shallow intervals. "How long has it been?"Ethan didn’t look up. His eyes were fixed on the door’s interior handle, or what was left of it. Chapter 23: The Mechanics of Betrayal"Is the safety on, Kaelen? Or has it rusted into place since the last time you actually had to aim at something besides a target board?" Lyra leaned heavily against the corrugated steel wall of the shipping container, her fingers tracing the edge of a deep dent in the metal."It’s not rusted, Lyra," Kaelen said, his voice grating like gravel over a dry heat. He didn't lower the submachine gun. The barrel remained centered on Ethan’s solar plexus. "And I don’t need it to be perfect to hit him from six feet away. You know what he is. You know what he represents.""I know what he looks like," Ethan interrupted, his voice intentionally level. He kept his palms open and away from his waist.
