CHAPTER 21: THE GRAND REWARD AND THE REVENGE PLAN

As soon as the door of unit 405 was locked from the inside, the warm atmosphere Julian felt together with Chloe vanished immediately. His cold true nature was visible again. After ensuring Chloe was already safe in her room, Julian walked to the small wooden table and opened his old laptop.

Bzzzt!

The laptop screen suddenly turned on by itself, emitting the bright blue light characteristic of the System. Text after text began to appear on the screen, calculating all the profits Julian obtained after messing up the auction event of his stepmother, Valerie Vance.

"Forty-two million dollars in the account, and a restaurant under my name," Julian murmured, his voice hoarse yet accompanied by a low chuckle that sounded satisfied. "Not bad for a man who two nights ago was considered to already be a corpse at the bottom of the Long Island ravine."

Julian shook his head slowly. There was a joyful feeling burgeoning in his chest when seeing those digital numbers. This System was truly a miracle. In a short time, he could reverse the situation and lock his stepmother's illicit money movements from a narrow boarding room.

However, as his eyes shifted to look around the room—at the thin floor mattress and the wall paint which was beginning to peel off—his jaw clenched tightly again. A feeling of annoyance suddenly jabbed the pit of his stomach.

"Damnit," he hissed while clenching his hand until his knuckles turned white. "I should be sitting in a Manhattan penthouse presiding over a directors' meeting. But look now? I have to crawl again from the bottom, hiding in a slum district, and pretend to be a poor young man named Ian merely to survive."

Julian let out a rough breath. It felt truly ironic. The former sole heir of Vance Corporation now had to start everything from zero, relying on a cracked laptop to rebuild his empire.

However, that annoyance did not last long. The next second, the memory of his father's cold voice and his dying mother's tears burned his head again. Julian's gaze turned as cold as polar ice, radiating a pure revenge that was highly dense.

"Just enjoy the remainder of your peaceful days while you can, Arthur, Valerie," Julian whispered, his voice trembling withholding an overflow of anger. "You think you can sleep soundly after seizing everything belonging to my mother? Never."

Julian wore a predatory smirk toward the glass window displaying the darkness of New York.

"I will become the shadow stalking your every step. I will destroy your business bit by bit, make your shares trash, and drag you to claw at each other from within. I swear, I will not let a single day pass without making you feel like you are living inside a hell."
