[ "Ren?" ] Kaito rumbled, the sound echoing off the polished obsidian walls. [ "That’s a name that doesn't sound like a serial number. That’s a start. Now, let’s see if we can get you a retirement plan." ]

Ren, the mirror-image guardian, didn't answer. His optical sensors flickered from a calm violet to a harsh, strobe-light red. The human hesitation that had flickered for a second was violently purged by a loud, internal WHIRR of cooling fans.

[ "Target identified as rogue prototype," ] Ren’s voice was now a cold, synthetic monotone. [ "Initiating immediate terminal decommissioning." ]

[ "Oh, wonderful," ] Kaito sighed, planting his heavy iron boots into the flagstones. [ "You’ve got a factory reset button. I’m just a guy who needs an oil change and a nap. This is going to be a long morning." ]

Ren didn't wait for pleasantries. He moved with a blurred, hydraulic grace, his blade arcing toward Kaito’s throat. Kaito ducked—or tried to, his rusty joints screaming in a shrill, metallic protest—and the sword shrieked against his shoulder plate, carving a groove deep into the iron.

[ "Watch the paint job!" ] Kaito roared, swinging a massive, piston-driven fist that missed Ren by a hair. [ "That was custom work! Well, mostly just trash I found in a ditch, but still!" ]

Ren pivoted on his heel, his movements so fast he looked like a spinning top made of blades. A second strike landed square in Kaito’s midsection, forcing a plume of black, oily smoke to vent from his sides.

[ "You’re fast," ] Kaito grunted, taking a step back as the floor groaned under his weight. [ "And you’re incredibly annoying. Can you stop vibrating for five seconds so I can hit you?" ]

[ "Efficiency is the only metric," ] Ren stated, his movements becoming more aggressive. [ "Your structural integrity is at forty percent. You are an obsolete design." ]

[ "Obsolete?" ] Kaito swiped his arm in a wide, sweeping arc, catching a decorative stone pillar and turning it into gravel. [ "I’m not obsolete! I’m just... seasoned! I’m 'vintage'! And vintage hits harder than you think!" ]

Ren lunged again, his blade piercing the thin gap where Kaito’s neck met his chest plate. Kaito felt a searing, electric shock radiate through his core. It felt like someone was trying to rewire his nerves with a lightning bolt.

[ "That," ] Kaito gasped, his voicebox gargling with static, [ "is going to be a very expensive repair bill for you." ]

[ "You are failing," ] Ren noted, pulling the blade free and preparing for a final, lethal thrust. [ "You fight like a dying animal. A creature of raw, uncalculated impulse." ]

[ "Yeah, well," ] Kaito steadied himself, his iron feet digging deep into the stone as he forced his damaged servos to lock in place. [ "Animals are pretty good at biting back, aren't they?" ]

Ren charged, a streak of shimmering steel. Kaito didn't move. He stood, his chest cavity exposed, his internal cooling system sputtering like a dying fire.

[ "End of cycle," ] Ren whispered, his blade aimed squarely at the center of Kaito’s heart-core.

[ "End of the line, pal," ] Kaito growled.

As the sword plunged forward, Kaito didn't try to block. Instead, he lunged into the blow, letting the blade impale his chest plate. The sharp metal crunched through the synthetic fiber and rusted iron, pinning Kaito to his own momentum.

[ "What?" ] Ren froze, his eyes widening as Kaito’s massive, grime-covered hand slammed onto his neck. [ "You are... sacrificing your core?" ]

[ "I’m not sacrificing anything," ] Kaito hissed, blood-black oil spraying from his chest onto Ren’s pristine armor. [ "I’m just closing the distance. My armor isn't just iron, Ren. It’s a mess of rust, dirt, and pure, concentrated spite." ]

Kaito’s hand, coated in years of Gen’s crude, alchemical grease and literal forest floor debris, locked onto Ren’s neck-joint.

[ "You wanted to know why I’m a prototype?" ] Kaito grunted, pulling Ren’s face closer until their optical sensors were nearly touching. [ "Because I don’t follow instructions. And because I’m filthy." ]

Kaito shoved his thumb into the delicate maintenance port at the base of Ren’s neck. He didn't just push; he ground his iron thumb into the assembly, forcing the gritty, rusted, acidic oil from his own inner workings directly into Ren’s sensitive, calibrated cooling system.

[ "Contamination detected!" ] Ren shrieked, his voicebox glitching into a high-pitched, harmonic whine. [ "System... override... impossible!" ]

[ "Oh, it’s very possible," ] Kaito wheezed, his own heart-core stuttering as the blade remained lodged in his chest. [ "It’s called 'getting your hands dirty.' You should try it sometime. It’s remarkably effective at ruining someone’s day." ]

Ren thrashed, his limbs spasming as the contaminants hit his internal processors. Sparks showered the room like a fountain of molten gold.

[ "You are... destroying the... foundation," ] Ren gasped, his red sensors flickering back to a dim, fading violet.

[ "I’m setting you free," ] Kaito groaned, his own systems nearing a total, final shutdown. [ "Now, do me a favor. Stop being such a... perfectionist." ]

Kaito gave one final, monstrous tug. With a sound like a cathedral bell being smashed, the metal gave way. Ren’s head-joint snapped, the internal gyros failing instantly. The guardian went limp, his body sagging against Kaito’s weight.

Kaito ripped the blade out of his own chest, the movement causing a groan of tortured metal that rattled the entire labyrinth. He caught Ren as he fell, lowering the limp, iron-clad form to the stone floor.

[ "Well," ] Kaito breathed, his voicebox clicking and whirring as he struggled to maintain consciousness. [ "That was... a workout. I think I’ve officially hit my quota for the year." ]

He leaned back against the wall, the blade he’d pulled from his chest dropping to the floor with a heavy CLANG. He looked down at Ren. The guardian’s eyes were dark, but for a brief moment, the faint, human pulse of a trapped soul seemed to be at peace.

[ "You were right," ] Kaito whispered to the silent figure. [ "I am a disaster. But at least I’m a disaster that gets to decide where it lands." ]

Ren’s optical shutter clicked one last time, a ghost of a blink. [ "They... the capital... the Iron Lords are waiting, Kaito. They know... the prototype has gone rogue." ]

[ "Let them wait," ] Kaito grumbled, his vision fading into static. [ "I’ve got a reputation to maintain. I can’t just walk into a capital looking like a clean suit of armor. I need to make a proper entrance." ]

[ "They won't... stop," ] Ren’s voice was a whisper of static. [ "The Seven Lords... they are not like me. They are... refined." ]

[ "Refined?" ] Kaito scoffed, the sound coming out as a wheezing hiss. [ "Great. More snobs. I hope they’re as flammable as you were." ]

Ren didn't respond. He simply went still, his form a silent monument to the cruelty of the foundry. Kaito sat there for a long time, the only sound the slow, rhythmic drip-drip of his own leaking fluids.

[ "Seven Lords," ] Kaito muttered to the darkness. [ "I guess I’m going to need a lot more oil, Gen. And maybe, just maybe, a really, really big hammer." ]

He forced his optical shutters to remain open, staring toward the far end of the maze where the path to the capital lay. He felt like he was falling apart, his every bolt screaming for relief, his frame leaning dangerously to the left.

[ "But hey," ] Kaito chuckled, a sound like a rusty gate swinging in a storm. [ "If they want an iron man, I’m going to give them a wrecking ball they’ll never forget. Provided I don’t trip over my own feet on the way there." ]

He stood up, his joints shrieking, his chest plate held together by sheer willpower and a prayer. He didn't look back at the broken guardian. He turned, the heavy CLANG-CRUNCH of his march echoing through the maze, and stepped out toward the horizon. The journey had only just begun, and for the first time, he wasn't running from his past. He was walking directly toward his future, with all the grace of a collapsing mountain.

The temple ahead was small, weathered, and perched on the edge of a cliff.[ "Finally," ] Kaito wheezed, his voice box crackling with static. [ "A place to die. Or at least a place where they have better tea than Gen’s 'swamp-water special.'" ]He stumbled through the temple’s wooden archway. Kaito’s optical shutters clicked open with the rhythmic, wet thunk of a meat tenderizer hitting a butcher’s block. His vision was a mosaic of fractured static, flickering in shades of violent violet and dead-grey. The forest around him seemed to be vibrating, the very trees leaning in to inspect the rusting, leaking heap of scrap that had dared to collapse at their roots."Status report," Kaito wheezed, his internal cooling fan spinning up with a shriek that sent a nearby squirrel bolting for the heavens. • Chapter 6: The Monk's Gamble

[ "I’m not a man anymore," ] Kaito repeated, the metallic static in his voicebox rising like a swarm of angry hornets. He stood motionless, his rusted joints locking in a rigid, awkward pose. [ "I am a walking, clanking, screeching pile of inventory. Don’t talk to me about souls, monk. Talk to me about why my internal cooling system sounds like a dying accordion." ]The monk didn't flinch. He adjusted his saffron robes, the silk whispering against the damp forest grass. He looked at Kaito with a gaze that felt far too sharp for someone who spent his days chanting at moss. [ "The discordance is not in the iron, Kaito. It is in your perception. If you hold onto the anger, the iron will continue to bite. If you release it, the metal will find its harmony." ][ "Harmony?" ] Kaito let out a scoff that sounded like a shovel dragging across a gravel driveway. [ "My arm just punched a hole through a mountain-side tavern yesterday. My 'harmony' involves shattering property values. Do you reall

  • Chapter 5: Road to the Second Lord

The forest path, a narrow vein of dirt carved into the ancient hillside, shivered under the rhythmic, thunderous assault of Kaito’s iron heels. Every stride was a chore, a mechanical dance performed by a dancer who had lost his sheet music.[ "Left foot. Pivot. Don't grind the knee joint," ] Kaito muttered to himself, his voice sounding like a radio dying in a canyon. [ "Easy does it. If I snap another gasket, I’m going to be a stationary lawn ornament." ]He crested a rise, the moonlight reflecting off his scarred shoulder plating, casting long, jagged shadows that danced like specters. A village sat in the valley below, a collection of thatched roofs that looked fragile enough to vanish under his lightest touch.[ "Oh, great," ] Kaito groaned, his neck gear chirping in protest. [ "Just what I need. A detour through suburbia. I hope they’re fond of heavy metal." ]As he clanked into the main thoroughfare, the quiet life of the village shattered. A farmer dropped a crate of radishes.
