Chapter 9: Warning! System Unable to Parse!
last update2025-08-07 22:47:05

Viridian's footsteps came to an abrupt halt three meters from the woman.

His heart felt as if gripped by an invisible giant hand; even the flow of his blood seemed to falter.

Something was wrong!

This woman radiated a chilling, uncanny strangeness from head to toe!

Just moments ago she had been beaten senseless like a rag doll by Grib, her life hanging by a thread; now she could erupt with such terrifying power, even... take pleasure in her "food"?

Most deadly of all, Veridian's enhanced extraordinary hearing picked up a fact that made his hair stand on end—

The woman's heartbeat had completely vanished the instant she lunged at Grib.

Not a cessation like death.

But a self-shutdown of bodily functions under an extreme rush of excitement!

[Warning! Unknown high-concentration vampiric aura detected!]

[Attempting to parse target... parsing failed!]

[Target bloodline purity: ???]

[Threat level: Extremely dangerous!!!]

On the deep-blue panel, a string of scarlet question marks and exclamation points flashed wildly, as if the system itself were screaming!

This was the first time since Veridian had obtained the golden finger that he had encountered an existence the system itself could not parse!

The hunter's hand crossbow in his grip cocked itself in a fraction of a millisecond; the cold steel bolt locked dead-on at the figure crouched beside the corpse.

"Vampire?"

Viridian's voice was low, threaded with a tension even he hadn't noticed.

The "woman"... or rather the girl, slowly lifted her head.

She licked the blood at the corner of her mouth, her movement so elegant it was as if she were tasting top‑tier caviar.

Under the pallid light, a face appeared unnervingly youthful—no more than sixteen or seventeen—with features so delicate they seemed the handiwork of God's most perfect creation.

Only those eyes…

In those crimson eyes burned an ancient indifference entirely at odds with her years, as if centuries had settled into them.

"Vampire?" The girl tilted her head and, in an ethereal, innocent tone, repeated the word as if savoring its sound. "Hmm, if you mean a creature that has to 'drink broth' to survive, then... I suppose I am."

Her gaze fell on Viridian.

Finally, it settled on his similarly crimson eyes.

"Oh?"

A look of delighted surprise bloomed across the girl's face in an instant, like a child who'd found a new toy.

"Your eyes are the same color as mine!"

"We're the same kind!"

She abandoned the now-withered "after-dinner dessert" at her feet and hopped toward Viridian, skirt fluttering, utterly unguarded.

Veridian's brain sounded an alarm; his body’s instincts made him recoil crazily!

What a joke!

A monster that could paralyze even the system was running toward him — this was straight out of a horror movie!

"Stop!"

Viridian gave a low growl and raised his hand crossbow; it was his last line of defense.

The girl's footsteps halted, her face showing a child's bewilderment and hurt.

"Why? Among our kind, aren't we supposed to huddle together for warmth? It's so cold here."

Her voice trembled slightly, and anyone who heard it would have felt a pang of pity.

But Viridian felt a chill shoot up from the soles of his feet straight to the crown of his head!

He sneered and forced himself to calm down: "Same kind? The way you just dealt with that 'mushroom' doesn't resemble any 'same kind' I know."

"Oh! You mean that!"

The girl suddenly understood and clapped her hands, then, right in front of Viridian, she opened her cherry-like little mouth.

Viridian's pupils contracted in an instant to the size of a pinprick!

Those were not the two characteristic sharp fangs of a vampire!

But a whole row! From left to right, densely packed, interlocking like a shark's teeth, flashing a grim white light like sawteeth!

Each tooth was like a carefully honed, razor-sharp miniature blade!

[Warning! Unknown vampire subspecies detected! Possesses 'Rend' attribute! Extremely dangerous!]

[Recommendation: The host should immediately, at once, without hesitation flee this location!]

The system, like never before, used three words indicating emergency in a row.

Viridian's muscles instantly tensed to the limit; adrenaline surged wildly.

But he didn't run.

Not that he didn't want to, but he couldn't!

Because the very moment he met the gaze of those rows of terrifying fangs, his HUD exploded!

[Beep! You are confronting the pressure of an "Ancient Bloodline." Passive skill [Willpower] proficiency +25!]

[Ding! You forcibly suppressed your flight instinct; passive skill [Courage] proficiency +30!]

[Ding! You are analyzing an unknown formidable enemy; active skill [Tactical Analysis] unlocked, proficiency +50!]

[Ding! Your [Holy Light Resistance] has contacted high-purity dark energy, proficiency +10!]

Proficiency!

Proficiency skyrocketing across the entire screen!

The fear in Viridian's eyes was replaced within a second by a fiercer, more frenzied greed!

Run?

What a joke!

This is not a monster at all! This is clearly a walking, endlessly-producing, top-tier mastery bundle!

“What is your name?”

Viridian drew a deep breath; his voice steadied and even took on a hint of the composed poise of someone of higher rank.

“Name?” The girl tilted her head, as if trying hard to remember. “It's been so long, so long since anyone called me by a name. They all called me ‘the thing in the feeding pit.’ But I remember—long ago, my mother called me Lillith.”

"You've been kept here all this time?" He changed the subject, trying to extract information.

"Yeah!" Lilith nodded as if it were obvious. "That mustached uncle called Wugou throws some bad guys in every so often to keep me fed. But he's so stingy—what he's sent lately are all skin and bones, not even enough to get stuck between my teeth."

She pointed at the mountain of bleached bones piled in the corner, her tone full of complaint.

Viridian's gaze swept over the bone heap, and his throat felt dry.

There are fucking at least a hundred of them!

“So,” Lilith’s eyes suddenly brightened. She stepped closer again, and a mingled scent of sweetness and blood washed over him, “are you one of Uncle Blackbone’s newly hired ‘delivery boys’ too?”

“You smell… good.”

“If—” Viridian’s eyes glittered with calculation as he decided to throw out a lure, “I mean, if I could help you ‘convince’ Blackbone to provide you with higher-quality, more delicious ‘food’?”

Lilith's eyes instantly lit up like two rubies.

"Really?!"

"Of course." Viridian gave what she believed to be her most "sincere" smile. "But I need your cooperation."

"No problem!" Lilith jumped up with excitement. "As long as there's something tasty, I'll do anything you say!"

It worked!

Veridi felt a surge of ecstatic joy.

An ancient vampire who had lived for who-knows-how-many years, a walking mastery factory, the ultimate weapon capable of effortlessly tearing enemies apart...

From today on, this would be the sharpest edge on his path of survival...

His thought hadn't finished turning yet.

Lilith's figure appeared before him with no warning, as if teleported.

The distance between them was less than ten centimeters.

Viridian could even make out her long eyelashes, and in the reflection of her pupils, his own face distorted with horror!

He tried to step back, but found his body held rigid by an invisible force, unable to move!

Lilith rose onto the tips of her toes, pressing her small nose against his neck and taking a long, deep breath.

Her face wore an unprecedented expression of utter rapture.

"Pleasure doing business with you, new 'deliveryman' sir."

Her voice, like a mutter in a dream, sounded in his ear — and sent Veridian falling into an icy abyss.

"But before we cooperate…"

Lilith slowly raised her head, her crimson tongue lightly licking her row of menacing fangs. Those innocent-looking eyes were filled with unabashed craving and greed.

"Your blood smells, compared to all of theirs put together, ten thousand times sweeter."

"Can you… let me taste just a little first?"
