Chapter 1

1. The Accident and The System

Heavy rain poured down relentlessly over the city streets, turning roads into glistening streams and reducing visibility to no more than a few meters ahead. Thunder rumbled deep in the dark clouds, followed by sudden flashes of lightning that briefly lit up the wet asphalt and empty sidewalks. It was the kind of night when most people stayed indoors, warm and dry, safe from the storm. But for Kael Vance, there was no such luxury.

At just twenty-one years old, Kael carried a weight far heavier than most people his age could imagine. A year earlier, his father had passed away suddenly after a long illness, leaving behind not only grief but also a mountain of debt and a family that depended entirely on him. His mother, weakened and suffering from a chronic respiratory condition, needed regular medication and rest, while the bills kept arriving every month without fail. To make ends meet, Kael worked two jobs: a delivery rider from dawn until late afternoon, then a night shift clerk at a small convenience store. He rarely slept more than three or four hours a day, and every coin he earned went straight to medicine, rent, and paying off creditors. No matter how hard he pushed himself, it always felt like he was running in place, never getting far enough ahead to truly escape his struggles.

“There has to be something better than this,” he thought, wiping rainwater from his eyes as he steered his old motorcycle carefully along the road. “If only I had even half the chance others do… I’d make something of it.”

He never expected that chance would come in the form of disaster.

Around a sharp, unlit bend ahead, a blinding pair of headlights suddenly cut through the rain. Before Kael could react, a large cargo truck came speeding toward him, its driver swerving wildly to avoid a deep puddle. The truck lost balance for a split second, drifting right into Kael’s lane.

“Watch out!” Kael shouted, twisting the handlebars and slamming on the brakes as hard as he could.

But the road was slick with rain. His tires locked and skidded, throwing up a spray of water and mud. There was no time to steer away. With a deafening crash, the motorcycle slid sideways, and Kael’s body was hurled violently across the hard asphalt. He rolled several times before finally coming to a stop, pain flaring up from every bone and muscle.

For a moment, everything went quiet, save for the sound of rain hammering against the pavement. Kael tried to move, but his limbs felt heavy and numb. Warm blood trickled down his forehead from a deep cut, and his left arm throbbed where it had scraped against the road. His vision blurred, and darkness began creeping in from the edges of his sight.

“Is this how it ends?” he wondered dimly. “I haven’t paid back what we owe… haven’t even earned enough to buy Mom the stronger medicine she needs…”

As his consciousness began to fade, a strange sensation washed over him — a cold but clear voice resonated directly inside his mind, not through his ears, but as if speaking straight into his thoughts.

[Scanning vital signs… Critical condition detected. Initiating emergency life support and synchronization process.]

[Binding sequence started: 10%… 30%… 50%… 80%… 100% ... complete!]

[Welcome, Host. The Universal Evolution System has been successfully bound to your soul and body. From this moment onward, your life will follow new rules.]

Kael’s eyes flew open. The sharp, burning pain across his body had softened into a dull, manageable ache, and the cold rain no longer felt like it was piercing through his skin. Floating in the air right in front of him was a semi-transparent panel of glowing blue light, sharp, clear, and visible only to him. Lines of text and numbers scrolled neatly across its surface.

HOST STATUS, Name: Kael Vance, level: 1, experience: 0/100, HP: 22/30. Energy: 15 / 30, strength: 5 (Average adult: 4). Agility: 6 (Average adult: 4). Intelligence: 5 (Average adult: 5), luck: 2, charisma: 3, Available Attribute Points: 0, skills: None, titles: None

System Status: Active, fully synchronized

Kael stared in disbelief, reaching out with his good hand, his fingers passed straight through the light without meeting any resistance. “What in the world… is this real? Or am I just hallucinating because of the injury?”

[This is not an illusion, Host. I am the Universal Evolution System. My core function is to guide you to surpass human limits, evolve continuously, and unlock potential you never knew you had. By completing assigned missions, you will gain experience, improve your stats, learn powerful skills, and obtain resources to change your life completely.]

Before Kael could even begin to process what this meant, the panel shifted, displaying new text in bright, bold letters.

MAIN MISSION UNLOCKED ....

Mission Name: First Step Toward a New Future, description: Move to a safe, dry location within the next ten minutes, stop the bleeding from your wounds, and complete at least one task or shift from your work today. This mission tests your will to survive and your determination to improve. Time Limit: 4 hours, Reward: 30 Experience Points, 5 Attribute Points, $35 USD, Minor Healing Potion × 1, Basic Survival Guide × 1

Failure Penalty: System synchronization will be terminated, and your HP will drop to 3 points, enough to leave you in a life-threatening state.

His heart hammered against his ribs as he read the words. The reward was more than just numbers; the money alone was equal to almost three days of his usual earnings, and the healing potion promised to fix his injuries far faster than any medicine he could afford. More importantly, the system’s explanation opened a door he had never dared to imagine — the chance to actually grow stronger, not just work harder.

“No way I’m letting this slip,” Kael told himself, gritting his teeth.

He pushed himself up from the wet ground, and to his surprise, the weakness he felt moments ago was fading. A faint stream of warm energy flowed from his chest outward, soothing his muscles and giving him enough strength to stand. He tore off a clean strip from the bottom of his shirt, wrapped it tightly around the cut on his forehead and his scraped arm, then began walking slowly toward the covered bus stop just a short distance away.

[Mission Progress: 42%]

As he walked, his eyes never left the glowing blue panel. This wasn’t just some strange occurrence — it was a turning point. For years, his fate had felt fixed, limited by money, health, and circumstances. But now, with the system bound to him, those limits no longer applied. He could become stronger, faster, smarter. He could earn enough to pay his debts, buy his mother the best treatment, and maybe even protect the people he cared about.

Yet beneath the excitement, a small voice of caution also rose. The system spoke of evolution, missions, and rewards — but it also warned of consequences for failure. And if such a powerful thing existed, what else was hidden in the world he thought he knew?

Reaching the shelter, Kael leaned against the wall, breathing steadily as the rain continued to fall outside. He stared up at the glowing interface, a mixture of determination and curiosity in his eyes.

“Alright,” he said quietly, his voice firm and steady. “If this system really can change everything… then I’m ready. Show me what comes next.
