"You look upset."

Vera was already in bed when Chris got home, reading a book by lamplight. She set it aside immediately when she saw his face.

"I saw my father tonight," Chris said, sitting on the edge of the bed. "He's getting worse. Much worse."

Vera pulled him close, wrapping her arms around him. "I'm so sorry."

"He gave me information about my stepmother," Chris continued, his voice tight. "About how she's been betraying our family. About how she might have contributed to my mother's death."

"What?" Vera pulled back to look at his face. "Chris, that's horrible."

He told her everything his father had revealed—the manipulation, the spying, the delayed medical treatment that had let his mother's cancer spread unchecked.

"I want to kill her," Chris said flatly. "I want to make her suffer the way my mother suffered."

"But you won't," Vera said firmly. "Because you're better than that. Because you'll find a legal way to destroy her, a way that ensures justice instead of revenge."

"You want to do what?"William stared at Chris in shock, which was unusual for the normally composed man. They were in Chris's office at Quantum Corp, along with Audrey and three other senior executives."I'm going to hold a press conference this Saturday," Chris repeated. "I'm going to reveal my identity as the owner of Quantum Corp and explain why I've been operating in secret.""Young master, are you certain this is wise?" William asked carefully. "Once you reveal yourself, there's no going back. You'll be exposed to public scrutiny, to your enemies, to everyone.""I'm already exposed," Chris said. "Jane Morrison has connected me to my father. Hunter Kane is surveilling me. Victor is posting conspiracy theories online. I can either control how the truth comes out, or I can let others control it for me.""What about your father?" Audrey asked. "Does he know about this plan?""I'm telling him tonight," Chris said. "But he won't object. He's been wanting me to take my rightful place p

"Mrs. Winchester, someone is following you."Vera looked up from her phone to see one of William's security team members standing beside her table at a small café near her office. She had stopped for lunch during her break, thinking she could have a moment of peace."Are you sure?" Vera asked quietly, though her heart rate immediately picked up."Positive. Gray sedan, two men. They've been on you since you left your office building. We've been tracking them for the past three days."Vera resisted the urge to look around. "Does Chris know?""Mr. William is informing the young master now. We're here to ensure your safety. When you're ready to leave, we'll escort you back to your office."Vera nodded, suddenly losing her appetite. She had known surveillance was a possibility, but knowing and experiencing were different things. The idea that strangers had been watching her every move for days made her skin crawl. She finished her coffee quickly and stood. The security guard stayed close b

"Your father wants to see you."Chris looked up from his desk to find William standing in the doorway, expression grave. It was late evening, and the Quantum Corp building was mostly empty except for security and a few workaholics."Is something wrong?" Chris asked, immediately concerned."He didn't say. But he asked that you come to the penthouse as soon as possible. He said it's urgent."Chris grabbed his jacket and followed William to the private elevator. During the ride up, he tried to prepare himself for bad news. His father's cancer was progressing. Maybe it had taken a turn for the worse. When he entered the penthouse, he found David Winchester sitting by the window, a blanket over his legs despite the warm evening. He looked frailer than he had just a week ago, his skin almost translucent in the soft lighting."Dad," Chris said, crossing the room quickly. "What's wrong? Are you okay?""Sit down, son," David said, his voice weaker than Chris remembered. "We need to talk."Chri

"Johnson Sterling, you're under arrest for fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy."Vera watched from across the street as police officers led her brother out of the Sterling family business building in handcuffs. A small crowd had gathered, phones out, recording everything. Johnson's face was red with rage and humiliation as cameras flashed.Margaret and Richard stood on the sidewalk, their lawyer beside them, looking shell shocked. The family empire they had spent decades building was crumbling in real time.Vera felt a hand on her shoulder. Siri had come to meet her for lunch and found her standing there, watching the scene unfold."Is that your brother?" Siri asked softly."Yes," Vera said, her voice hollow. "The police finally had enough evidence to arrest him.""How do you feel about it?"Vera considered the question carefully. "Sad. Relieved. Guilty that I'm relieved. It's complicated.""Family always is," Siri said. "Come on. Let's get out of here before they see you."They w

"She did what?"Victor Kane stared at his brother Hunter in disbelief. They were in Hunter's warehouse, a legitimate business front for less legitimate activities. The space was filled with crates and shipping containers, and men who worked for Hunter moved about with purpose."She confronted her family," Hunter repeated, leaning against a metal desk. "Cut them off completely. Chose Chris Winchester over them.""That doesn't make sense," Victor said, pacing frantically. "The Sterlings were on my side. They wanted her to divorce him and marry me. Why would she choose him now?""Because you're bankrupt and humiliated," Hunter said bluntly. "And because maybe she actually loves him.""She can't love him," Victor insisted. "He's nothing. A warehouse worker living in a crappy apartment. What could she possibly see in him?"Hunter studied his younger brother with a mixture of pity and frustration. Victor had always been ambitious but never particularly smart. He saw what he wanted to see an
