Chapter 65
*[Elara]*
A cage is not defined by its bars. It is defined by the absolute absence of hope.
I knelt on the freezing metal floor of the cargo hold, my shoulders screaming in protest as the heavy steel cuffs dug into my wrists. The steady, deafening hum of the jet engines vibrated through the metal grating, vibrating straight into my bones.
I didn't thrash against the chains. I didn't scream.
I closed my eyes, forcing the image of Cassian slamming his bloody, scarred fists against the ballistic glass to the very back of my mind. If I let the grief of leaving my family take root, I would shatter. I needed the icy, emotionless detachment of the assassin.
"You're remarkably quiet, Viper."
Arthur’s voice was a grating, ruined rasp over the roar of the engines.
I opened my eyes. He was sitting in a plush leather armchair bolted to the floor a few feet away, swirling a glass of amber scotch. The right side of his face remained impossibly aristocratic; the left was a melted, horrific nightmare of shiny scar tissue.
"I have nothing to say to a corpse," I replied, my voice a dead, hollow flatline.
Arthur chuckled, taking a slow sip. "You always were arrogant. You thought pushing me off a balcony would end the High Table? You merely pruned the dead branches. I spent ten years in the shadows, letting your little mafia king believe he ruled the world, while I built a new Commission."
He leaned forward, the scotch sloshing in his glass.
"The Five Families are soft," Arthur sneered. "They rely on money and fear. But fear fades. Only absolute, mechanized devotion lasts. I have spent a decade breeding a new generation of Praetorians. They don't have names. They don't have attachments. They are perfection."
"And yet," I said, tilting my head slightly, locking my gray eyes onto his one good eye, "you still needed me."
Arthur’s jaw tightened. The nerve beneath his ruined skin twitched.
"I don't need you," Arthur corrected coldly. "I needed to make a point. Your network of ghosts the forty-nine orphans you stole from me they proved to be an annoying operational hazard. They killed my strike teams in Europe."
"They protected their family," I countered.
"They obeyed a Master," Arthur hissed, standing up. He walked over to me, striking my knee sharply with the tip of his silver cane. "They are broken tools. I took you to prove to them that their Master is nothing but a dog on my leash. When I broadcast your submission, they will shatter. They will realize the light is a lie."
He was going to use my surrender to break the ghosts. To break Nine.
"Where are you taking me?" I asked.
"Home, Elara," Arthur smiled, a hideous, lopsided expression. "To the Black Site. A subterranean fortress in Siberia where the sun never shines. We are going to strip away the domestic rot the Rossi boy infected you with. By the time I am finished, you won't even remember your son's name."
The threat didn't spike my adrenaline. It triggered something infinitely colder.
I let my head droop slightly, feigning exhaustion. I shifted my weight on my knees, allowing my shackled hands behind my back to subtly twist.
"Arthur," I murmured, my voice trembling perfectly with manufactured despair. "Please. I'll give you the network codes. I'll give you everything. Just promise me you won't touch Leo."
Arthur laughed, a triumphant, cruel sound. He took a step closer, completely invading my space, basking in my surrender.
"Pathetic," he mocked, leaning down until his ruined face was inches from mine. "The great Viper, begging."
"I'm not begging," I whispered, the trembling completely vanishing from my voice.
I snapped my head upward.
I drove the crown of my skull with brutal, blinding force directly into the bridge of his nose.
Bone crunched sickeningly. Arthur shrieked, staggering backward, clutching his face as blood poured down his pristine white suit.
At that exact millisecond, my hands broke free.
The Praetorians thought they had secured me. They hadn't checked my left hand. They didn't realize that the heavy, vintage gold Rossi crest ring I had worn for ten years wasn't just a symbol of my marriage.
The inner band of the ring housed a microscopic, diamond-wire filament.
While Arthur was monologuing, I had spent the last twenty minutes slowly, agonizingly sawing through the heavy steel tumblers of the cuffs behind my back.
I surged to my feet, the severed cuffs clattering to the metal floor.
The two Praetorian guards at the back of the cargo hold reacted instantly, drawing their humming, electrified blades and lunging toward me.
I didn't have a weapon, but I had Arthur.
I grabbed the stumbling architect by his lapels, spinning his body around just as the first Praetorian swung his sword. The super-heated blade sliced cleanly through Arthur’s right arm, severing it completely at the elbow.
Arthur’s scream was inhuman. He collapsed onto the metal grating, writhing in agony.
I didn't pause. I used his falling body as a ramp, stepping off his back and launching myself into the air. I drove my knee directly into the first Praetorian’s throat, grabbing the hilt of his sword as he dropped.
The second guard swung a lateral strike aimed at my waist.
I parried it flawlessly with the stolen blade. The collision of the electrified weapons sent a blinding shower of blue sparks across the dark cargo hold. The kinetic force vibrated up my arm, threatening to dislocate my shoulder, but I held the lock.
The guard pushed forward, using his massive weight advantage.
I let him.
I dropped the resistance, pulling my blade back. The guard stumbled forward from his own momentum. I sidestepped, driving my humming blade cleanly through the gap in his carbon-fiber armor, straight into his spine.
He dropped instantly, paralyzed and dead.
I stood in the center of the cargo hold, the humming sword gripped tightly in my hand.
Arthur lay on the floor, clutching his cauterized stump, staring at me in absolute, horrified disbelief.
"You didn't break me, Arthur," I stated coldly, walking slowly toward him. "You just locked me in a box with dead men."
Before I could raise the blade to finish him, the entire cargo jet violently lurched.
The plane banked at a catastrophic, ninety-degree angle. Gravity inverted. I was thrown hard against the fuselage wall, dropping the heavy sword.
The intercom above the cockpit door screeched to life.
*"Mayday! Mayday!"* the pilot screamed, panic entirely shattering his professionalism. *"We have lost radar! Something is on the hull!"*
I pulled myself up, gripping the metal ribs of the plane, looking toward the heavy cargo ramp at the back of the jet.
A deafening, metallic tearing sound echoed through the fuselage.
The thick steel of the ramp suddenly buckled inward. Four massive, explosive breaches tore through the heavy locking mechanisms simultaneously.
The ramp was violently ripped open from the outside, plummeting downward.
The deafening roar of the jet engines and the freezing, rushing wind of thirty thousand feet instantly sucked the oxygen from the cargo hold. Loose debris flew out into the black night sky.
I grabbed a heavy cargo strap bolted to the wall, holding on for dear life as the cabin depressurized.
Silhouetted against the dark sky, standing on the edge of the open, freezing ramp, were ten figures.
They wore advanced, high-altitude tactical armor. They didn't have parachutes. They had grappled onto the exterior of the plane mid-flight.
The lead figure stepped into the cargo hold, magnetic boots locking heavily onto the metal grating. He pulled off his dark, tactical helmet, tossing it carelessly out into the sky.
The freezing wind whipped through his dark hair. His obsidian eyes were wild, unhinged, and burning with the fury of a god who had just torn heaven apart to find his queen.
Cassian Rossi raised his heavy assault rifle, aiming it directly at Arthur's bleeding body on the floor.
"Did you really think," Cassian roared over the howling wind, "I was going to let you take my wife?"

Chapter 77*[Elara]*Silence in the aftermath of violence is the loudest sound on earth. The stealth transport tore through the stormy sky over the Atlantic Ocean, moving at hypersonic speeds back toward Rome. The cargo hold was freezing, vibrating with the sheer power of the engines, but the tension radiating off Cassian generated enough heat to warm the entire cabin. He hadn't sat down since we extracted from the Apex Tower. He stood near the open cockpit door, staring out into the black clouds, his jaw locked so tight I could see the muscles feathering in his cheek. Nine sat perfectly still on the metal bench opposite me, cleaning his weapons with terrifying, robotic efficiency. I leaned my head back against the cold fuselage, closing my eyes. My crimson gown was in tatters, the hem ruined by concrete dust and blood. Every muscle in my body ached, a deep, bone-weary exhaustion that begged me to sleep. But sleep was a vulnerability I couldn't afford. "Sterling was a messenger,"

Chapter 76*[Cassian]*Falling through a collapsing skyscraper is not a clean drop. It is a violent, chaotic tumble through a blender of jagged steel, exploding concrete, and razor-sharp rebar. I locked my arms around Elara, pulling her flush against my chest, twisting my body in mid-air to ensure my back took the brunt of the impact. The heavy Kevlar plating beneath my tuxedo absorbed a brutal strike from a falling concrete slab. My ribs screamed in protest, but I didn't loosen my grip. We crashed through the ceiling of the seventy-ninth floor. The Vanguard mercenaries waiting below had triggered the charges perfectly, blowing out the structural supports. The ceiling caved in, crushing the staging area they had prepared. We hit the floor hard, sliding across a thick layer of pulverized drywall and shattered glass. The impact knocked the wind out of me, a violent explosion of white light bursting behind my eyes. I rolled onto my back, instinctively shielding Elara as a massive se

The crystal chandeliers flickered and died, plunging the opulent ballroom into total, suffocating blackness."Night vision! Now!" Cassian roared, the sound of his pistol discharging twice echoing through the dark.I didn't need the command. I tapped the microscopic sensor behind my ear, activating the specialized contact lenses resting over my eyes. The pitch-black room instantly flared into a crisp, glowing green.I looked down. Sterling was dead. Cassian had put two bullets through his chest the second the lights cut out. But the billionaire’s final, hysterical laugh still haunted the air."Mamma! Papa!" Leo’s voice screamed through the encrypted comms, completely stripped of his usual calm. "Get out of there! The Vanguard troops in the building weren't the primary security! It was a honeypot!""Calm down, Leo. Talk to me," I ordered, spinning back-to-back with Cassian, my ceramic

The Rossi stealth transport touched down on the roof of an abandoned shipping warehouse in Brooklyn at three in the morning. We brought no army. An army is a target. We brought exactly three people: Cassian, myself, and Viper Nine."Comms check," I murmured, adjusting the microscopic earpiece hidden beneath my dark hair."I have you on satellite, Mamma," Leo’s voice crackled, broadcasting securely from the subterranean war room back in Rome. "The Pantheon’s East Coast operations are heavily compartmentalized, but I tracked the financial footprint. Chapter 72*[Elara]*The war room beneath the Roman safehouse smelled exactly as it had a decade ago—like cold ozone, hot servers, and impending bloodshed. I stood at the head of the obsidian table, staring at the shattered remains of the stealth drone. Viper Nine’s strike team had tracked its return vector, intercepting the extraction team on the coast and recovering the wreckage. "No serial numbers. No manufacturer stamps," Matteo reported, standing with his arms crossed. The veteran Capo looked exhausted, the sudden breach of peace aging him five years in a single night. "The metallurgy is advanced composite. You can't buy this on the black market. This is classified, state-level hardware."Cassian paced the length of the room like a caged tiger. He wore a dark tactical shirt, the sleeves pushed up to expose the violent scars on his forearms. "You don't send a multi-million-dollar drone to shoot a wine glass," Cassian growled, his deep voice bouncing off the concrete walls. "It
