Chapter 73
[Elara]
New York City does not sleep, but it does lie. It hides its monsters behind walls of reinforced glass, obscuring its rot with the blinding glare of billion-dollar neon.
We didn't fly into JFK or LaGuardia. The Rossi stealth transport touched down on the roof of an abandoned shipping warehouse in Brooklyn at three in the morning. We brought no army. An army is a target. We brought exactly three people: Cassian, myself, and Viper Nine.
"Comms check," I murmured, adjusting the microscopic earpiece hidden beneath my dark hair.
"I have you on satellite, Mamma," Leo’s voice crackled, broadcasting securely from the subterranean war room back in Rome. "The Pantheon’s East Coast operations are heavily compartmentalized, but I tracked the financial footprint. The Sterling Family one of the four pillars is hosting a private charity gala tonight at the Apex Tower in Manhattan."
"Charity," Cassian scoffed darkly, standing beside me in the shadows of the warehouse roof. He slipped a custom-fitted suppressor onto his sidearm. "American syndicates love to wash their blood money in public."
Cassian wore a tailored charcoal tuxedo that fit his massive frame flawlessly, though the cut was specifically designed to conceal the heavy Kevlar plating beneath the silk. I wore a backless crimson evening gown with a slit up the left thigh, granting me unhindered access to the ceramic blades strapped to my leg. We looked like billionaires. We were dressed for a funeral.
"Nine," Cassian commanded without looking back.
The assassin stepped out of the freezing rain. He wore the uniform of a high-end private security contractor. "The perimeter of the Apex Tower is secured by Vanguard PMC," Nine reported, his voice flat. "Two hundred armed mercenaries. Biometric scanners at all elevator banks."
"Leo," I said, tapping my earpiece. "Can you blind the scanners?"
"It's Pantheon tech, Mamma. If I blind them, it triggers a silent alarm," my son replied, the rapid clicking of his keyboard bleeding through the line. "But I can clone a VIP profile. I'm overriding the guest list now. You are officially listed as Alexander and Elena Sterling, distant European cousins."
Cassian offered a slow, predatory smirk. He offered me his arm.
"Shall we go meet our new family, wife?"
The drive into Manhattan was a blur of rain-slicked asphalt and towering steel monoliths. When our black town car pulled up to the glittering entrance of the Apex Tower, Vanguard mercenaries immediately swarmed the vehicle. They were heavily armed, wearing discreet earpieces and tailored black suits.
Cassian stepped out first, adjusting his cuffs with the casual, arrogant grace of a man who owned the world. He turned and offered me his hand.
I stepped onto the wet pavement, my crimson dress sweeping against the concrete.
The Vanguard captain stepped forward, holding a biometric tablet. "Names, please."
"Alexander Sterling," Cassian stated smoothly, his Italian accent adding a layer of aristocratic intimidation. He placed his thumb on the glowing glass pad.
The tablet chimed a cheerful green. Access Granted.
I did the same. The mercenary captain bowed his head respectfully, gesturing toward the gleaming golden elevator banks.
We stepped into the glass elevator. As the doors slid shut, the fake smiles instantly vanished from our faces.
"Top floor," Cassian noted, watching the floor numbers rapidly tick upward. "Arthur's intel stated that Jonathan Sterling commands the Vanguard PMC. If we cut his throat, the Pantheon loses their private army."
"We don't just kill him," I corrected, the ice of the Viper freezing the blood in my veins. "We make an example of him. We have to show the other three families that the ocean does not protect them."
The elevator chimed at the eightieth floor. The doors parted.
The penthouse ballroom was a staggering display of American opulence. Crystal chandeliers the size of cars hung from the vaulted ceilings. A string quartet played softly over the hum of hundreds of wealthy, corrupt elites sipping champagne.
But my eyes didn't linger on the diamonds or the silk. I scanned the tactical layout.
"Twelve Vanguard guards in the room," I murmured to Cassian, keeping my lips completely still. "Four at the exits. Two flanking the balcony. The rest blending into the crowd."
"And the target is holding court at the center," Cassian replied quietly.
Jonathan Sterling stood near a massive ice sculpture. He was a man in his late fifties, sporting a flawless tan and a tailored navy suit. He laughed at a joke, swirling a glass of bourbon, looking entirely untouchable.
"Let's go say hello," Cassian murmured, placing his hand firmly on the small of my back.
We wove through the crowd, moving with the terrifying, synchronized grace of two apex predators stalking a deer in a gilded cage. The American elites parted for us instinctively, sensing the heavy, radiating danger that we didn't bother to hide.
We stopped directly in front of Sterling.
The Pantheon boss paused mid-laugh, noticing us. He frowned, his eyes raking over Cassian’s massive frame and my crimson gown.
"I don't believe we've met," Sterling said, a polite but cautious smile touching his lips. "I know everyone in my family, and I certainly wouldn't forget a couple as striking as yourselves."
Cassian didn't smile. He took a single step closer, entirely invading the American's personal space.
"We aren't family, Jonathan," Cassian rumbled, his voice dropping into a register that made the champagne tremble in Sterling’s glass. "We are the eviction notice."
Sterling’s eyes widened in sudden, horrifying recognition.
Before he could shout for his guards, the heavy glass doors of the penthouse ballroom violently shattered inward, plunging the opulent gala into absolute, screaming chaos.

I took a heavily armored smuggling sub from a clandestine port in Sicily, riding beneath the radar of European maritime patrols until we reached international waters. From there, I transferred to an unmarked freighter carrying black-market munitions to the port of Baltimore. The journey took four agonizing days. The Rot Within
Chapter 78*[Cassian]*Betrayal is a poison that doesn't just kill the victim; it rots the very foundation of the house they stand in. I stared at the black screen, the silence in the war room stretching so tight it threatened to snap the air in half. The remaining Capos of the Five Families were looking around the room, their eyes wide with sudden, terrifying suspicion. The men they had bled with, drank with, and sworn oaths with could be Pantheon sleepers. The enemy wasn't an armada sailing across the Atlantic. The enemy was standing right next to them, holding an assault rifle. "Clear the room," I growled, my voice a low, vibrating rumble of absolute menace. Nobody moved. The shock had paralyzed them. "I said clear the damn room!" I roared, slamming my fists onto the obsidian table. The impact cracked the glass holographic interface. The Capos didn't hesitate a second time. They scrambled toward the heavy steel doors, desperate to escape the wrath of the King. Matteo hesitate
The Broken Halo
Chapter 77*[Elara]*Silence in the aftermath of violence is the loudest sound on earth. The stealth transport tore through the stormy sky over the Atlantic Ocean, moving at hypersonic speeds back toward Rome. The cargo hold was freezing, vibrating with the sheer power of the engines, but the tension radiating off Cassian generated enough heat to warm the entire cabin. He hadn't sat down since we extracted from the Apex Tower. He stood near the open cockpit door, staring out into the black clouds, his jaw locked so tight I could see the muscles feathering in his cheek. Nine sat perfectly still on the metal bench opposite me, cleaning his weapons with terrifying, robotic efficiency. I leaned my head back against the cold fuselage, closing my eyes. My crimson gown was in tatters, the hem ruined by concrete dust and blood. Every muscle in my body ached, a deep, bone-weary exhaustion that begged me to sleep. But sleep was a vulnerability I couldn't afford. "Sterling was a messenger,"
The Freefall Crucible
Chapter 76*[Cassian]*Falling through a collapsing skyscraper is not a clean drop. It is a violent, chaotic tumble through a blender of jagged steel, exploding concrete, and razor-sharp rebar. I locked my arms around Elara, pulling her flush against my chest, twisting my body in mid-air to ensure my back took the brunt of the impact. The heavy Kevlar plating beneath my tuxedo absorbed a brutal strike from a falling concrete slab. My ribs screamed in protest, but I didn't loosen my grip. We crashed through the ceiling of the seventy-ninth floor. The Vanguard mercenaries waiting below had triggered the charges perfectly, blowing out the structural supports. The ceiling caved in, crushing the staging area they had prepared. We hit the floor hard, sliding across a thick layer of pulverized drywall and shattered glass. The impact knocked the wind out of me, a violent explosion of white light bursting behind my eyes. I rolled onto my back, instinctively shielding Elara as a massive se

Chapter 75[Elara]The heavy steel shutters hit the marble floor with a deafening, earth-shaking slam. The crystal chandeliers flickered and died, plunging the opulent ballroom into total, suffocating blackness."Night vision! Now!" I tapped the microscopic sensor behind my ear, activating the specialized contact lenses resting over my eyes. The pitch-black room instantly flared into a crisp, glowing green.I looked down. Sterling was dead. Cassian had put two bullets through his chest the second the lights cut out. But the billionaire’s final, hysterical laugh still haunted the air."Mamma! Papa!" Leo’s voice screamed through the encrypted comms, completely stripped of his usual calm. "Get out of there! The Vanguard troops in the building weren't the primary security! It was a honeypot!""Calm down, Leo. Talk to me," I ordered, spinning back-to-back with Cassian, my ceramic
