Chapter 72

*[Elara]*

The war room beneath the Roman safehouse smelled exactly as it had a decade ago—like cold ozone, hot servers, and impending bloodshed.

I stood at the head of the obsidian table, staring at the shattered remains of the stealth drone. Viper Nine’s strike team had tracked its return vector, intercepting the extraction team on the coast and recovering the wreckage.

"No serial numbers. No manufacturer stamps," Matteo reported, standing with his arms crossed. The veteran Capo looked exhausted, the sudden breach of peace aging him five years in a single night. "The metallurgy is advanced composite. You can't buy this on the black market. This is classified, state-level hardware."

Cassian paced the length of the room like a caged tiger. He wore a dark tactical shirt, the sleeves pushed up to expose the violent scars on his forearms.

"You don't send a multi-million-dollar drone to shoot a wine glass," Cassian growled, his deep voice bouncing off the concrete walls. "It was a warning shot. They were telling us that our walls are made of paper."

The heavy steel doors hissed open.

Leo walked in, flanked by Viper Nine. My son’s face was an impenetrable mask, but the dark circles under his eyes betrayed his exhaustion. He had spent the last twelve hours tearing through encrypted American data streams, hunting the ghost that had shot at his mother.

Leo didn't speak. He stepped up to the table, plugged a flash drive into the holographic console, and swiped his hand across the glass.

The massive screen on the wall flared to life.

It didn't display a map. It displayed an organizational chart. A sprawling, terrifyingly complex web of global syndicates, corrupt politicians, tech conglomerates, and private military contractors.

"The High Table," Leo began, his voice calm and methodical, "was a regional subsidiary. A franchise."

The air left my lungs. "A franchise?"

"We thought Arthur and the Emissary were the apex of the pyramid," Leo explained, highlighting a small, insignificant box near the bottom of the chart. "But they were just managing Europe. The real power the architects who actually built the underworld operate out of the United States."

Leo tapped the screen. The chart zoomed to the very top of the pyramid.

A single, terrifying insignia appeared. A golden eagle holding a bleeding globe in its talons.

"They call themselves the Pantheon," Leo stated softly. "Four families. They control the American seaboards, the silicon valleys, and the offshore defense contractors. They watched you dismantle the High Table ten years ago, Mamma. They let you do it because Arthur was becoming a liability."

"They let us prune their dead branches," Cassian deduced, stopping his pacing. The fury in his eyes sharpened into cold, terrifying strategy. "And now they are coming to claim the newly manicured garden."

"The drone wasn't just a warning," Nine spoke up, his pale eyes shifting from the screen to me. The master assassin remained as still as a statue. "It was an eviction notice. My network intercepted chatter on the deep web. The Pantheon is demanding the Rossi Syndicate surrender all European shipping ports and dismantle the Viper network within forty-eight hours."

"And if we refuse?" Matteo asked, though the dread in his voice proved he already knew the answer.

Leo swiped the screen again.

A live satellite feed appeared. It showed a massive fleet of unmarked, black cargo ships moving slowly across the Atlantic Ocean, heading straight for the Mediterranean.

"If we refuse," Leo whispered, "they are bringing an army of fifty thousand private military contractors to the shores of Italy. They aren't going to fight a shadow war, Papa. They are going to invade."

Silence crushed the war room.

Fifty thousand men. The Rossi Syndicate commanded a fraction of that number. We were a mafia family, not a sovereign nation. We couldn't fight an invading armada.

Matteo swallowed hard. "Boss... we can't hold Rome against a military force. We have to negotiate. We have to give them the ports."

"We give them an inch, they will take the continent," I interjected fiercely, the icy venom of the assassin finally taking over. I looked at Cassian. "If we bow to the Pantheon, we validate their authority. They will demand our blood next."

Cassian didn't look at the screen. He looked at me. He saw the fierce, unyielding defiance in my gray eyes, and it mirrored his own perfectly.

Cassian Rossi didn't bow.

"Matteo," Cassian commanded, his voice a low, rumbling earthquake of absolute authority. "Call the Five Families. Tell them to mobilize every single soldier, enforcer, and hitman in Europe. Arm them with everything we have."

"Papa," Leo cautioned, stepping forward. "Even with the Five Families, we are outnumbered ten to one."

"Wars aren't won with numbers, Leo," Cassian murmured, a dark, devastating smile slowly curling his lips. "They are won by cutting the head off the snake."

Cassian turned his obsidian gaze back to the glowing emblem of the Pantheon on the screen.

"Pack your tactical gear, Elara," the King of Rome ordered quietly. "We are going to America. And we are going to kill gods."

I took a heavily armored smuggling sub from a clandestine port in Sicily, riding beneath the radar of European maritime patrols until we reached international waters. From there, I transferred to an unmarked freighter carrying black-market munitions to the port of Baltimore. The journey took four agonizing days. Four days of suffocating silence in a windowless steel cabin, reviewing the encrypted data Leo had squeezed from Vanguard's servers before the connection died. The Pantheon hadn't taken Don Salvatore to a skyscraper in Manhattan. They took him to *The Aegis* a massive, fortified private military compound built into the dense, isolated forests of the Catskill Mountains in upstate New York. When the freighter finally d

Chapter 78*[Cassian]*Betrayal is a poison that doesn't just kill the victim; it rots the very foundation of the house they stand in. I stared at the black screen, the silence in the war room stretching so tight it threatened to snap the air in half. The remaining Capos of the Five Families were looking around the room, their eyes wide with sudden, terrifying suspicion. The men they had bled with, drank with, and sworn oaths with could be Pantheon sleepers. The enemy wasn't an armada sailing across the Atlantic. The enemy was standing right next to them, holding an assault rifle. "Clear the room," I growled, my voice a low, vibrating rumble of absolute menace. Nobody moved. The shock had paralyzed them. "I said clear the damn room!" I roared, slamming my fists onto the obsidian table. The impact cracked the glass holographic interface. The Capos didn't hesitate a second time. They scrambled toward the heavy steel doors, desperate to escape the wrath of the King. Matteo hesitate

Chapter 77*[Elara]*Silence in the aftermath of violence is the loudest sound on earth. The stealth transport tore through the stormy sky over the Atlantic Ocean, moving at hypersonic speeds back toward Rome. The cargo hold was freezing, vibrating with the sheer power of the engines, but the tension radiating off Cassian generated enough heat to warm the entire cabin. He hadn't sat down since we extracted from the Apex Tower. He stood near the open cockpit door, staring out into the black clouds, his jaw locked so tight I could see the muscles feathering in his cheek. Nine sat perfectly still on the metal bench opposite me, cleaning his weapons with terrifying, robotic efficiency. I leaned my head back against the cold fuselage, closing my eyes. My crimson gown was in tatters, the hem ruined by concrete dust and blood. Every muscle in my body ached, a deep, bone-weary exhaustion that begged me to sleep. But sleep was a vulnerability I couldn't afford. "Sterling was a messenger,"

Chapter 76*[Cassian]*Falling through a collapsing skyscraper is not a clean drop. It is a violent, chaotic tumble through a blender of jagged steel, exploding concrete, and razor-sharp rebar. I locked my arms around Elara, pulling her flush against my chest, twisting my body in mid-air to ensure my back took the brunt of the impact. The heavy Kevlar plating beneath my tuxedo absorbed a brutal strike from a falling concrete slab. My ribs screamed in protest, but I didn't loosen my grip. We crashed through the ceiling of the seventy-ninth floor. The Vanguard mercenaries waiting below had triggered the charges perfectly, blowing out the structural supports. The ceiling caved in, crushing the staging area they had prepared. We hit the floor hard, sliding across a thick layer of pulverized drywall and shattered glass. The impact knocked the wind out of me, a violent explosion of white light bursting behind my eyes. I rolled onto my back, instinctively shielding Elara as a massive se

I tapped the microscopic sensor behind my ear, activating the specialized contact lenses resting over my eyes. The pitch-black room instantly flared into a crisp, glowing green.I looked down. Sterling was dead. Cassian had put two bullets through his chest the second the lights cut out. But the billionaire’s final, hysterical laugh still haunted the air."Mamma! Papa!" Leo’s voice screamed through the encrypted comms, completely stripped of his usual calm. "Get out of there! The Vanguard troops in the building weren't the primary security!
