Chapter 54
**[Elara]**
A monofilament whip is a coward’s weapon. It relies entirely on reach and intimidation. If the wielder controls the distance, you die before you even realize you've been cut.
But if you step inside their guard, the weapon becomes entirely useless.
The lead assassin snapped the humming, glowing wire forward. It wasn't a standard swing; it was a lateral strike aimed precisely to sever my torso in half.
I didn't step back. I dropped completely flat, my chest hitting the cold dirt of the chapel floor.
The super-heated wire sliced the air inches above my spine, cleanly severing a thick stone column behind me as if it were made of warm butter.
I didn't wait for the assassin to retract the whip. I used my downward momentum to coil my legs, launching myself forward like a coiled spring directly into the assassin's center of mass.
The vantablack armor was incredibly dense, but physics is a merciless judge. A heavy object has terrible balance.
I slammed my shoulder into the assassin’s knees, driving the ceramic blade in my right hand upward into the tiny, unarmored gap at the inner thigh joint.
The assassin didn't scream their vocal cords were likely modified or muted by the helmet but they violently buckled.
I rolled out from under the falling body, spinning to face the remaining two shadows.
*Crack. Crack. Crack.*
Cassian’s sniper fire rained down through the ruined roof, precise and relentless. He wasn't trying to pierce their armor anymore; he was shooting the stone floor directly in front of their boots, driving rock shrapnel upward into their visors, violently disorienting them.
"They're flanking you!" Cassian’s voice barked over the comms, tight with suppressed panic. "Get out of the kill box!"
"I'm not leaving Nine!" I yelled back, dodging a secondary whip strike that melted the edge of my silk robe.
The second assassin lunged, abandoning the whip for a close-quarters combat knife.
I parried the strike with my left dagger, the ceramic screeching against the steel. I spun, aiming a brutal kick at the side of their knee, but the third assassin was already there.
A heavy, armored boot caught me squarely in the ribs.
The impact was catastrophic. I flew backward, crashing hard against the jagged remnants of a stone pew. The breath exploded from my lungs, black spots dancing furiously across my vision. My left dagger skittered across the floor, lost in the dark.
The two standing assassins advanced, raising their weapons to finish the job.
I struggled to my knees, gasping for air, clutching my ribs. I couldn't move fast enough.
Suddenly, a massive, deafening roar ripped through the chapel walls.
It wasn't a sniper rifle. It was the explosive, mechanical scream of a high-performance engine tearing through the brush outside.
The stone wall of the chapel violently exploded inward.
A heavy, matte-black armored SUV crashed directly through the ancient masonry, obliterating the wall and violently running over the second assassin. The vantablack armor crunched sickeningly under the reinforced steel chassis as the three-ton vehicle slammed into the altar.
The third assassin scrambled backward, raising their glowing whip toward the SUV.
The driver's side door flew open.
Luca didn't step out. He leaned out, bracing a heavy, belt-fed light machine gun over the armored door frame.
He didn't fire standard rounds. He fired armor-piercing incendiary tracers.
The deafening chatter of the machine gun filled the chapel, illuminating the dark ruins in a blinding, strobing orange light. The incendiary rounds tore into the third assassin, the sheer kinetic force driving the figure backward, pinning them against the back wall until the armor finally failed and the body slumped to the floor, smoking and lifeless.
The silence that followed was broken only by the hiss of the SUV’s radiator and the settling dust.
Cassian dropped through the ruined roof, landing flawlessly in a crouch. He didn't even look at the dead assassins. He sprinted directly to me, dropping his rifle.
"Elara!" he yelled, sliding to his knees, his hands frantically running over my body to check for severed limbs. "Are you hit? Talk to me!"
"Ribs," I wheezed, coughing dust from my lungs. I waved him off, pointing a trembling finger toward the altar. "Check Nine. Check Nine!"
Cassian spun around. Luca was already out of the SUV, hauling a heavy trauma kit toward the bleeding ghost.
"He's fading fast, Boss," Luca shouted, tearing open a package of hemostatic gauze and packing it brutally deep into Nine’s sword wound. "He needs a surgeon ten minutes ago."
Cassian scooped me up into his arms, entirely ignoring his own rules about perimeters and safety. He carried me to the back of the SUV, setting me gently onto the leather seats.
Luca and Cassian grabbed Nine, hauling the unconscious, bleeding assassin into the back of the transport.
"Drive!" Cassian roared to Luca, climbing into the back with us and slamming the heavy doors shut.
Luca scrambled into the driver’s seat, threw the SUV into reverse, and tore out of the ruined chapel, leaving a cloud of dust and three dead phantoms in our wake.
Cassian immediately took over Nine’s triage. He ripped open a bag of IV fluids with his teeth, expertly finding a vein in the assassin’s pale arm in the jarring, bouncing cabin.
I leaned heavily against the ballistic window, clutching my ribs, trying to regulate my breathing.
I looked at the mangled, bleeding body of the young man who had spent a decade silently watching my son grow up from the shadows.
"Why did they leave him alive?" I whispered, the tactical anomaly gnawing at my brain. "They had monofilament whips. They could have severed his head in a microsecond. Why leave him to bleed?"
Cassian tightened the IV line, his jaw locked in a grim, terrifying realization.
"You said it yourself, Elara," Cassian replied, his dark eyes meeting mine. "He was a beacon. They didn't want to kill him. They wanted him to scream loud enough for you to hear."
My blood ran cold.
If drawing me out to the chapel was the objective... what was the distraction?
"Cassian," I choked out, a wave of pure, unadulterated panic washing over me. "The villa."
Cassian didn't hesitate. He grabbed the encrypted satellite radio from the roof console of the SUV.
"Matteo!" Cassian barked into the receiver. "Status report on the house! Now!"
Static.
Cassian pressed the button harder. "Matteo, respond!"
The static hissed, a long, agonizing sound that seemed to stretch into eternity.
Then, the line clicked open.
But it wasn't Matteo’s rough, seasoned voice.
It was a soft, trembling, terrified whisper.
*"Mamma... Papa..."*
My heart completely stopped. The world narrowed to a singular point of absolute horror.
"Leo," Cassian breathed, the color draining entirely from his face. "Leo, where are you? Where is your Aunt Lily?"
*"We're in the vault,"* Leo cried softly, the sound of heavy, rhythmic banging echoing violently through the receiver in the background. Someone was trying to break down the steel door. *"Aunt Lily is hurt. She’s bleeding. They’re outside the door, Papa. They’re burning the lock."*
The nightmare hadn't ended ten years ago. It had just been sleeping.
And the monsters were currently standing outside my son’s bedroom.

Chapter 76*[Cassian]*Falling through a collapsing skyscraper is not a clean drop. It is a violent, chaotic tumble through a blender of jagged steel, exploding concrete, and razor-sharp rebar. I locked my arms around Elara, pulling her flush against my chest, twisting my body in mid-air to ensure my back took the brunt of the impact. The heavy Kevlar plating beneath my tuxedo absorbed a brutal strike from a falling concrete slab. My ribs screamed in protest, but I didn't loosen my grip. We crashed through the ceiling of the seventy-ninth floor. The Vanguard mercenaries waiting below had triggered the charges perfectly, blowing out the structural supports. The ceiling caved in, crushing the staging area they had prepared. We hit the floor hard, sliding across a thick layer of pulverized drywall and shattered glass. The impact knocked the wind out of me, a violent explosion of white light bursting behind my eyes. I rolled onto my back, instinctively shielding Elara as a massive se

Sterling was dead. Cassian had put two bullets through his chest the second the lights cut out. But the billionaire’s final, hysterical laugh still haunted the air."Mamma! Papa!" Leo’s voice screamed through the encrypted comms, completely stripped of his usual calm. "Get out of there! The Vanguard troops in the building weren't the primary security! The Rossi stealth transport touched down on the roof of an abandoned shipping warehouse in Brooklyn at three in the morning. We brought no army. An army is a target. We brought exactly three people: Cassian, myself, and Viper Nine."Comms check," I murmured, adjusting the microscopic earpiece hidden beneath my dark hair."I have you on satellite, Mamma," Leo’s voice crackled, broadcasting securely from the subterranean war room back in Rome. "The Pantheon’s East Coast operations are heavily compartmentalized, but I tracked the financial footprint. Chapter 72*[Elara]*The war room beneath the Roman safehouse smelled exactly as it had a decade ago—like cold ozone, hot servers, and impending bloodshed. I stood at the head of the obsidian table, staring at the shattered remains of the stealth drone. Viper Nine’s strike team had tracked its return vector, intercepting the extraction team on the coast and recovering the wreckage. "No serial numbers. No manufacturer stamps," Matteo reported, standing with his arms crossed. The veteran Capo looked exhausted, the sudden breach of peace aging him five years in a single night. "The metallurgy is advanced composite. You can't buy this on the black market. This is classified, state-level hardware."Cassian paced the length of the room like a caged tiger. He wore a dark tactical shirt, the sleeves pushed up to expose the violent scars on his forearms.
