The next day, the sky was still dark when Thom was already awake. The sun had not yet risen on the eastern horizon, but he was already standing in the kitchen, brewing green tea for himself and for Jasmine.

Today was a big day. Jasmine’s first day as the CEO of Lanster Company.

Thom put on his neat black suit.

Jasmine came out of her room fifteen minutes later. She wore a light cream blazer paired with a matching pencil skirt. Her appearance was professional, elegant, and slightly nervous. Her long hair was styled neatly, and her makeup was subtle but made her look more mature.

"Are you ready?" Thom asked from the living room.

Jasmine exhaled, trying to calm her heart that was beating too fast. "I think so. But... a little nervous."

"That’s normal. It’s your first day."

"I can go by myself by taxi, Thom. You don’t have to—"

"I want to take you," Thom cut in, his voice firm. "For your first time going to the office, I will be the one to drive you."

Jasmine looked at him. Then she smiled. "Alright."

They left when the sky began to turn orange. Thom drove calmly, occasionally glancing at Jasmine, who sat in the passenger seat with both hands gripping her work bag tightly.

"Don’t be too tense," Thom said. "You’ll be fine."

"I know. I just... never imagined I would become a CEO. Especially of a company as big as Lanster."

"Your ability is more than enough, Jasmine. Trust yourself."

Jasmine nodded, trying to convince her own heart.

After a journey that felt short, Thom’s car stopped in front of the Lanster Company building. The skyscraper with its dark blue glass stood majestically in the central business district. At the main entrance, the company flag fluttered gently in the morning breeze.

Thom and Jasmine got out of the car. They walked toward the glass revolving door at the front of the building.

But as soon as they stepped inside, the atmosphere felt strange.

No one greeted them.

The spacious main lobby looked as usual. Employees moved back and forth with busy expressions. The receptionist at the front desk was occupied with calls and her computer. There were no welcome banners. No flower arrangements. No one stood at the entrance to welcome the new CEO.

Thom stopped. His eyes scanned the room, searching for something he could not find. "This is strange," he said.

“Why didn’t they prepare a welcome for the new CEO?” Thom asked.

Jasmine stood beside him, feeling the same oddness. "Maybe they don’t know what I look like? Or maybe they forgot?"

Thom shook his head. "Impossible. Your name, your profile, and your photo have already been published on the company’s announcement website. All the employees should know who their new CEO is. And they should know you’re coming today for the first time."

24 hours passed…In the hospital. The pastel-colored room with cartoon drawings on the walls felt warm despite the air conditioner running quite cold. Shenina lay on a small bed, a rabbit-patterned blanket covering her tiny body. Her face was still pale, but her breathing was steady, and occasionally her lips curved into a smile in her sleep.Jasmine sat on a chair beside the bed, her hand holding Shenina’s small fingers. Her eyes were swollen from lack of sleep, but she refused to leave the girl for even a second.Ukaz stood near the door, his eyes watching the corridor through the glass. Two other Delta Force members sat on chairs in the outer waiting area, their weapons hidden beneath their jackets.Thom stood by the window, his back to Jasmine and Shenina. His phone was pressed to his ear. His voice was low, not wanting to wake Shenina."Report." Red Dragon on the other end let out a breath."King, the police have checked all airports, train stations, bus terminals, and ports. The

Rachel fell silent. Her silence was answer enough for Whiro. The man did not need to hear a confession word by word. Rachel’s silence, the way she lowered her head, the way her hands trembled in her lap—everything had already spoken louder than a thousand screams.Whiro walked to the small bar in the corner of the room. A dark wooden rack held rows of whiskey, bourbon, and other liquors Rachel had never heard of. He took a bottle of deep amber whiskey, poured it into a thick glass without ice, then sipped it slowly. His back was still facing Rachel. His eyes stared at the wall in front of him, seeing nothing."Four years ago," Whiro said, his voice flat, devoid of emotion, "I told you to aborted it." Rachel bit her lip."You didn’t follow my order." Whiro turned around. His eyes fixed on Rachel from a distance. "And now," he continued, "you come here. Into the tiger’s den. Asking for help. For what?"He took another sip of his whiskey. Waiting. Unhurried.Rachel sat on the floor,

Rachel waited for ten minutes. Ten minutes that felt like ten years. She stood in the dim mansion living room, surrounded by damp exposed brick walls, old chandeliers casting a faint yellow glow, and dark corridors in every corner whose ends she had never known. On the walls, large posters displayed skulls, fire, and half-naked women. In the corner of the room, a spiked baseball bat lay beside a black leather sofa torn in several places.Throughout the wait, Rachel did not dare to move. Her eyes stayed fixed straight ahead, staring at the wooden staircase at the end of the room. Around her, tattooed men in black vests still stood, still watched her with unfriendly eyes, still made her feel like a mouse that had wandered into a snake’s cage.Rachel’s legs began to tremble. She could not control them. The high heels that once made her feel confident now felt like instruments of torture. Her heels ached, her back was sore, and her neck felt stiff from holding her head upright. She hea

Meanwhile, in the city of Yeruss. Rachel managed to escape. She left Thom’s house through the back door, running as fast as she could through the narrow alleys behind the residential area, took a taxi to the train station, changed trains twice, then took a bus to the airport. Everything was done in panic, without a plan, driven only by the instinct to survive. She arrived at the airport with sweat soaking her entire body, her perfume long gone, her sky-blue dress wrinkled and slightly torn at the sleeve from getting caught. She bought a plane ticket to the city of Yeruss, the last available destination. The plane took off an hour later. As the plane ascended, Rachel stared out the window, watching the city that had been the backdrop of her entire life slowly shrink, turning into tiny dots, then disappearing behind the clouds. After landing at Yeruss Airport, Rachel immediately turned on her phone. The screen was flooded with news notifications. Her face was displayed everywhere.

Mr. Edmund walked out of Madam Yosie’s treatment room with a pale face and trembling steps. His wife was still lying inside, connected to an IV and a heart monitor. The doctor said Madam Yosie had suffered severe shock. Her blood pressure had spiked, then dropped drastically. She needed to be hospitalized for at least one night for observation. Mr. Edmund could only nod helplessly as the doctor explained, having no energy to ask further questions. He walked to the waiting room with a chaotic mind. Rachel had become a fugitive. Rachel had sold her own child. His wife had fainted. And now, Thom stood in front of him holding a piece of paper. "Please read this," Thom said, handing over the brown envelope. Mr. Edmund accepted it with trembling hands. He opened the envelope slowly, took out the paper inside, and read it. His eyes moved from the first line to the last. His face changed from pale to white like the paper in his hands. "How is this possible?" whispered Mr. Edmund, his voic

Before Madam Yosie and Mr. Edmund arrived, before the chaos in the waiting room, Thom had already taken the first step. He could not just stay silent after finding out that his blood was not compatible with Shenina’s. That was the first clue, but not absolute proof. Blood types could lie? No. But DNA never lies.Thom called Doctor Rizki to a quieter corner of the room, far from the ears of nurses and other patients."Doctor, I need something.""Anything, Sir,” the doctor replied.Thom looked the doctor straight in the eyes. "A DNA test. Me and Shenina. Do it now."Doctor Rizki was shocked. "Sir, DNA test procedures usually take several days, even weeks. We have to send the samples to a forensic laboratory in the capital—""I do not have days,” Thom said.Doctor Rizki fell silent, he did not dare to argue with a King of War. So he nodded, “Alright, Sir.”Doctor Rizki nodded. "Alright, Sir. I will take samples from you and from Shenina. The results will be ready in one to two hours."T
