The footsteps were getting closer, and voices could be heard calling out search coordinates. Yemin made a split-second decision that went against every survival instinct he had developed.

"This way," he said decisively, grabbing her arm and pulling her toward a service elevator. "Stay close and do exactly what I tell you."

The elevator began its ascent, carrying them away from immediate danger but toward an uncertain future where the secrets of Sphinx might finally be revealed.

The service elevator carried them up three floors before Yemin hit the emergency stop button, trapping them between levels. The silence was broken only by their heavy breathing and the distant sounds of the search continuing below.

"Alright, we have maybe five minutes before they figure out where we went," Yemin said, his voice low and urgent. "Start talking. What exactly do you know about Sphinx?"

The woman leaned against the elevator wall, still catching her breath. "My name is Sarah Chen. I'm an investigativ

Two weeks later, Yemin found an elegant invitation in his mail delivery. The heavy cardstock and gold embossing proclaimed Katherine and James's housewarming celebration at their new estate, complete with dress code requirements and valet parking.Pathetic, Yemin thought, tossing the invitation into the trash without a second glance. When Katherine received no RSVP after several days, she escalated her approach. Yemin's email inbox chimed with a message that made his blood run cold."Dearest Yemin," the email began, "I noticed you haven't responded to my party invitation. How terribly rude of you! But I suppose that's to be expected from someone of your... diminished circumstances. However, I feel I should mention that if you don't attend my little gathering, I might be compelled to contact that nice gentleman who gave me his business card. You remember - the one with the interesting pattern that looked so similar to that ring you gave to poor Faye? I'm sure he'd be fascinated to know

Over the following weeks, Faye launched what could only be described as a relentless romantic campaign. Her calls came at all hours, her text messages grew increasingly creative, and she seemed to appear wherever Yemin happened to be conducting his business."Yemin, I brought you coffee," Faye announced brightly as she intercepted him outside a downtown office building. "Your favorite - black, no sugar.""Faye, you need to stop this.""Stop what? Being a good friend? I also picked up some of those pastries from the French bakery you mentioned liking.""I never mentioned liking any pastries.""Well, I thought you might like them. Everyone likes French pastries."Yemin continued walking, but Faye fell into step beside him with determined cheerfulness. "I was thinking we could catch that new action movie tonight. You know, just as friends?""No.""How about dinner then? There's this amazing Italian place that just opened—""Faye, the answer will always be no. Please stop asking.""But wh

  • Chapter 103

Yemin spent the next three hours methodically checking for surveillance, using every counter-intelligence technique he had learned during his years in hiding. He doubled back through alleyways, used reflective surfaces to check for tails, and made sudden directional changes to flush out any potential watchers.Agent Collins is good, but not good enough to track me when I'm actively evading surveillance, Yemin thought as he completed his final security sweep from the roof of a downtown parking garage.Satisfied that he was truly alone, Yemin pulled out a secure satellite phone and dialed a number he hadn't used in months."Good evening, sir," came the immediate response. "We've been waiting for your call.""I need a pickup. Corner of Fifth and Madison, discreet approach.""Of course, sir. The car will be there in seven minutes."Within the promised timeframe, a sleek black limousine with tinted windows glided silently to the curb. The rear door opened automatically, revealing luxurious

Satisfied that he had successfully turned Thomas into his inside source within Sphinx, Yemin made his way back to the city as dawn broke over the horizon. The modest three-star hotel where he had been staying under his false identity seemed like a sanctuary compared to the dangerous games he had been playing at the Ashford estate. Now I wait, Yemin thought as he approached the hotel's entrance. Let Thomas gather intelligence while I plan my next moves from the shadows. As he walked through the lobby, the front desk clerk looked up with obvious relief. "Mr. Morgan! Thank goodness you're back. There's been someone asking about you.""What kind of someone?""A very well-dressed gentleman. He seemed quite... insistent about knowing when you would return. He left his contact information and asked me to call him the moment I saw you."That can't be good, Yemin realized, but before he could ask for more details, his phone buzzed with a message from an unknown number: "Welcome home, loser. • Chapter 101

Yemin stared down at Sarah's lifeless body, his rage threatening to consume him completely. But even in his fury, his tactical mind remained sharp. He knew that confronting Agent Collins directly would expose his true identity, and that could destroy everything he had worked to build.Collins saw me as the manservant earlier tonight, Yemin realized. If he recognizes me now, it will blow my entire cover. His eyes swept across Sarah's apartment until they landed on a colorful silk scarf draped over her desk chair. Without hesitation, he grabbed the fabric and quickly wrapped it around the lower half of his face, creating an improvised mask that would conceal his identity. This will have to do, he thought grimly as he checked his reflection in Sarah's bedroom mirror. Collins will know someone is after him, but he won't know it's the same 'servant' from the company.Yemin burst back into the stairwell and began his descent, his enhanced hearing picking up the sound of rapid footsteps seve

  • CHAPTER 100

Sarah opened her apartment door with trembling hands, relief flooding her face when she saw the familiar figure of the man who had saved her earlier that evening."Thank God it's you," she gasped, stepping aside to let Yemin enter. "I was terrified it might be someone else.""Going somewhere?" Yemin asked, noticing the packed duffel bag and the scattered documents on her coffee table."Yes, I'm getting out of the city tonight. I'm driving to my grandmother's cabin upstate - it's remote, off the grid, perfect for laying low until I can figure out what to do with all this evidence.""Running away already? I thought you were an investigative journalist. Don't you want to expose what you've discovered?"Sarah ran her hands through her hair anxiously. "I thought I did, but this is so much bigger than anything I've ever dealt with. These people... they kill anyone who threatens them. I'm in way over my head here.""Calm down," Yemin said firmly, settling into a chair across from her. "Take
