Across the city, Sarah stood in the weapons research wing of Sterling Corporation, reviewing the latest production data on her tablet.

The military clients had moved up their delivery timeline by three weeks, and the mercenary organizations were pressuring for early shipment of the newest batch of modified assault systems.

Every number on the screen traced back to Kevin's work, his calculations, his parameters, his engineering brilliance hidden inside the company's infrastructure like a skeleton inside a body.

She didn't know that. Had never known it. Had never thought to ask how Sterling Corporation's weapons division had gone from mediocre to industry leading in the span of three years.

The office door swung open without a knock.

Jasper walked in carrying two cups of coffee, one in each hand, his smile gentle and apologetic. He still moved carefully, one hand occasionally pressing against his abdomen, but his color had improved and his eyes were bright and alert.

"Why are you still coming to work?" Sarah took the coffee but frowned at him. "You should be resting."

"The doctor cleared me this morning. Light desk work only, nothing strenuous." He settled into the chair across from her, his posture relaxed and easy. "Besides, I saw the new delivery timeline. You're drowning, Sarah. Let me help."

His voice was warm with concern, the kind of genuine worry that made her feel seen and appreciated in a way that Kevin's cold silence never could. She pushed that thought away the moment it arrived, but not before it left a mark.

"Actually," Jasper continued, leaning forward with careful enthusiasm, "I was hoping you'd let me assist with the weapons research and production reports. I know there's a mountain of paperwork, and I could take some of the pressure off your shoulders."

Sarah's frown deepened. The weapons data was Kevin's domain.

Every classified figure, every proprietary formula, every compatibility adjustment bore his fingerprints.

Sharing that information with anyone outside the inner circle felt wrong, like opening a door that was meant to stay locked.

And beyond that, she'd promised Kevin. Distance. Professional boundaries. No more blurred lines.

"No," she told him firmly. "The weapons division is off limits. That data stays where it is."

Jasper's smile faltered. Hurt flickered across his face, quick and raw, before he masked it with a nod of understanding. "Of course. I'm sorry for overstepping."

The guilt hit Sarah immediately. He was only trying to help. Only trying to lighten her burden because he cared about her wellbeing, and she'd shut him down cold.

"Don't apologize," she said, her tone softening despite herself. "I appreciate you wanting to help. Actually, I've been thinking about something. There's a deputy manager position opening up in the Eastern operations department. It's a promotion, Jasper. More responsibility, better title, higher pay."

His face lit up. "Really? You'd trust me with that?"

"You've earned it."

But then she watched the realization settle over him, slow and painful, as he understood what the transfer actually meant. His smile stiffened. The brightness left his eyes.

"You're moving me away from you."

Sarah's chest tightened. "I'm promoting you."

"Is this because of Kevin?" His voice was quiet, fragile. "Did he ask you to do this?"

"This is a business decision."

"Can I refuse?" Jasper's eyes searched her face, desperate and pleading. "I don't care about titles or pay, Sarah. I want to stay by your side. Working with you, supporting you, being there when you need someone. That matters more to me than any promotion ever could."

The words tugged at something deep inside her, something she didn't want to examine. Sarah forced herself to stay firm.

"This isn't negotiable, Jasper. You need room to grow, and I need you in a position where your talents can make the biggest impact."

His shoulders sagged. He nodded slowly, the picture of quiet acceptance, a man swallowing his own pain because the woman he respected had made her decision.

"One more thing," Sarah added as he stood to leave. "Knock before you enter my office from now on."

The words came out harsher than she intended, and she saw them land on his face like a slap. He flinched, barely, just enough for her to notice. Then he straightened his expression into something gracious and compliant.

"Of course. I understand."

He walked to the door with slow, heavy steps. Sarah watched him go, and the pity in her chest grew into something sharp and uncomfortable. Before the door closed completely, she heard herself speak.

"Jasper. If you ever run into trouble, you can still come to me."

He turned back. The gratitude that flooded his face was so genuine, so full of relief, that Sarah felt her heart crack a little. He thanked her softly and pulled the door shut behind him.

The moment it clicked closed, Jasper's expression went flat.

The gratitude vanished. The vulnerability disappeared like steam off a mirror. His jaw tightened, and something cold and calculating moved behind his eyes as he walked down the corridor past rows of oblivious employees.

She was pulling away from him. Kevin's influence was working, slowly poisoning her against him, and if he didn't act soon, everything he'd spent six months building would collapse.

The rooftop terrace of La Pergola glowed with candlelight.

Sarah had arrived an hour early. She'd arranged everything herself, the table positioned at the edge of the terrace overlooking the Milano skyline, white roses in a crystal vase, a bottle of Barolo that cost more than most people's rent.

The candles flickered in the warm evening breeze, casting soft shadows across the white tablecloth.

She wore the red dress Kevin loved.

The one she'd bought for their anniversary last year but never had the chance to wear because Jasper had called that evening with a crisis at the office.

She'd chosen it tonight on purpose, a silent apology wrapped in silk.

Kevin appeared at the terrace entrance, led by a waiter in a black vest.

He wore a dark suit she'd never seen before, and for a moment he looked like someone else entirely.

Someone powerful and distant, a man who carried authority in the way his shoulders sat and the way his eyes swept the room before settling on her.

Then his gaze softened. Just barely. Just enough for Sarah to feel the knot in her chest begin to loosen.

"You came," she whispered as he sat down across from her.

"I said I would."

Sarah poured the wine with hands that trembled slightly. She lifted her glass, and the candlelight caught the deep red liquid, making it glow like a living thing.

"Happy birthday, Kevin."

He raised his glass to meet hers. "Happy birthday, Sarah."

The crystal rang softly as the glasses touched. They drank without breaking eye contact, and something passed between them in the silence, something fragile and bruised but still breathing.

Sarah set down her glass. She reached across the table and took his hand, lacing her fingers through his the way she used to do during those early months when everything was new and perfect and the future stretched ahead of them like an open road.

"I'm here," she told him. "I'm not going anywhere tonight. Not for anything. Not for anyone."

Kevin looked at their intertwined fingers. Looked at the candles. Looked at this woman who could still make his chest ache with wanting even when she was the source of his greatest pain.

Sarah stood from her chair, walked around the table, and leaned down to press her lips against his.

A kiss.

The kiss was slow and deep, tasting like wine and apology and something desperate underneath it all, a woman trying to hold together something that was coming apart in her hands.

Sarah's eyes filled with tears. The memories came uninvited, three years of Kevin cooking her favorite meals, removing her shoes at the door, holding her when the stress of running Sterling Corporation felt like it would crush her. The man who rubbed her feet after long days without being asked."He was perfect," she whispered, and the word broke something inside her."Then we need to fix this," Jasper said firmly. The doorbell rang at exactly eight o'clock.Sarah was already moving before the sound finished echoing through the apartment, practically running to the front door with an eagerness that made Kevin's chest go cold. She'd been waiting for this. Probably counting the minutes since she woke up, watching the clock, listening for the buzzer.Waiting for Jasper the way she'd never once waited for Kevin. He stood in the kitchen doorway and watched her swing the door open. Jasper stood on the other side holding a paper bag from the bakery downstairs, dressed in a clean white shirt and pressed trousers, looking healthy and rested and nothing at all like a man who'd supposedly been burned by an exploding microwave twelve hours ago."Good morning, everyone." Jasper stepped inside with the comfortable ease of a man walking into his own home, his smile warm and natural as he set the bakery bag on the counter. "I brought cornetti. The ones from that place on Via Torino you like, Sarah."Kevin didn'

Jasper's voice was gentle, careful, full of the kind of concern that felt like being wrapped in something warm. "I've been worried about you all night. I couldn't sleep thinking about what happened.""I'm fine." The lie was so transparent that she didn't even bother selling it."You don't sound fine." A careful pause. "Did Kevin... I mean, I don't want to overstep, but did he say anything hurtful to you? He seemed really angry earlier, and sometimes when people get that angry, they can do things they don't mean."The implication sat between the words like a shadow. Sarah frowned slightly but didn't push back against it."He didn't do anything. He just locked himself in the guest room and won't talk to me.""That's not okay either, Sarah."
