The bar was called "The Rusty Anchor." A dive in the worst part of the city. Broken neon sign. Cracked windows. The kind of place where people came to forget their problems or create new ones.

I walked in as Viktor Ross.

The disguise was simple. A fake beard. Dark contacts. A scar painted on my cheek. Old leather jacket that smelled like cigarettes and cheap whiskey. I moved with a swagger I didn't feel, projecting confidence I didn't have.

The bar was half-empty. A few drunks nursed their beers. A couple of tough-looking men played cards in the corner. The bartender was a big man with a shaved head and a scarred face.

I walked to the counter. "I'm looking for Mira."

The bartender's eyes narrowed. "Who's asking?"

"Viktor Ross. I have business with her."

"Never heard of her." He picked up a glass and started wiping it. "Get lost."

I leaned forward. "Tell her the Blood Moon is rising. She'll understand."

The bartender's hand stopped moving. He studied me for a long moment. Then he nodded toward a door in the back.

"Through there. Wait at the table. Don't touch anything."

---

The back room was small and cluttered. A desk covered in papers. A filing cabinet. A small couch with torn upholstery.

I sat at the table. Waited.

The door opened. A woman walked in.

She was younger than I expected. Maybe forty. Dark hair streaked with silver. Sharp eyes that missed nothing. She wore a simple dress and a silver necklace with a pendant I recognized.

The Blackwood crest.

"Mira," I said.

"You're not Viktor Ross." Her voice was calm. Controlled. "Viktor Ross is dead. I read his obituary this morning."

"Then you know why I'm here."

"I know you're a dead man walking." She sat across from me. "Alexander has eyes everywhere. You coming here put both of us at risk."

"I need your help."

"You need a lot more than that." She studied my face. "You have your mother's eyes. And your father's stubbornness. That's going to get you killed."

"You knew them?"

"I knew your mother better than anyone." Her voice softened. "We were friends. Sisters, almost. I was there the night she died."

I felt the keys pulse beneath my skin. "Tell me what happened."

Mira reached into her desk and pulled out a small box. She opened it. Inside was a silver ring, identical to the one Eleanor wore.

"Your mother gave this to me the night she made her deal with Alexander. She knew she wasn't going to survive. She asked me to protect the network until you were ready to claim it."

"I'm ready now."

"No, you're not." She closed the box. "You're still raw. Untrained. If you try to claim the network now, you'll burn out and die."

"What do you want me to do?"

"Train. Learn. Become the man your mother believed you could be." She pushed a folder across the table. "Inside is the location of the next Observer. She'll teach you what I can't."

I opened the folder. A photo of a woman with white hair and kind eyes. A name. An address in a small mountain town.

"Who is she?"

"An old friend. She's been waiting for you for thirty years." Mira stood up. "But before you go, there's something you need to understand."

"What?"

"Alexander knows you're alive. He knows you're getting stronger. He's going to come for you with everything he has." She held my gaze. "Are you ready for that?"

"Yes."

"Then prove it." She pointed at the door. "There are three men outside. Alexander's men. They followed you here. I need you to deal with them without killing anyone."

"Why?"

"Because killing them will make Alexander escalate. We need to send a message." She smiled coldly. "We need to show him that you're dangerous. That you can hurt him without leaving a trail of bodies."

I stood up. "Fine."

"One more thing." She reached into her desk and pulled out a small device. "A jammer. It'll block their communications for a few minutes. Use that window."

I pocketed the jammer. Walked to the door.

"Kaelen." Mira's voice stopped me. "Your mother would be proud of you."

I didn't turn around. "I'll see you again."

"Count on it."

---

I walked out of the back room and through the bar. The three men were easy to spot. Black suits. Hidden earpieces. Eyes that tracked my every move.

I activated the jammer.

The nearest man's earpiece crackled. He touched it, confused.

That was my opening.

I moved fast. The keys pulsed beneath my skin, feeding me speed and strength. The first man went down with a punch to the throat. The second reached for his weapon, but I grabbed his arm and twisted. He screamed. I slammed his head into the bar.

The third man was smarter. He ran for the door.

I let him.

---

Outside, the night air was cold. The man was gone. Disappeared into the shadows.

Mira appeared beside me. "You let him go."

"I wanted to send a message."

"And what message is that?"

I looked at the darkness where the man had vanished.

"Tell Alexander I'm coming for him."

The mountain road was treacherous. Hairpin turns. Steep drops. No guardrails.I drove the rusted pickup slowly, headlights cutting through the fog. The keys beneath my skin pulsed with each mile, guiding me forward like a compass pointing home. The cabin appeared at dawn.It was small. Wooden. Smoke rising from a stone chimney. Nestled in a clearing surrounded by ancient pines. Exactly the kind of place where nobody would think to look for a fugitive prince.I killed the engine. Stepped out into the cold mountain air.The door opened before I could knock."Took you long enough." The woman's voice was warm. "I was starting to think you'd gotten yourself killed."She was older than her photo. White hair pulled back in a simple braid. Kind eyes lined with laughter and grief. • The Escape from Below

Drake moved like a predator. He grabbed my arm and yanked me toward a wall of ancient symbols. His hand pressed against a carved stone, and the wall slid open, revealing a narrow passage."Through here. Now."I didn't argue. I dove into the darkness just as the first gunshots echoed from the staircase above. The passage was tight. Cold stone pressed against my shoulders on both sides. I could hear Drake behind me, his breathing steady and controlled."Keep moving," he growled. "They know the layout. They'll have men waiting at the other end.""How do you know?""Because I used to work for Alexander."I stopped."Keep moving!" Drake shoved me forward."You worked for Alexander?" I kept running, but my mind was racing. "That's how you know everything? You were one of them?""I was. Until he killed my brother." Drake's voice was flat. "Now I'm your best chance at survival. So shut up and run."---The passage opened into a wide tunnel. Sewage water rushed past our feet. The stench was ov

  • The First Observer

The white light faded slowly, leaving behind a world that wasn't quite right.I stood in a vast chamber. Stone walls. High ceilings. Torches flickered in iron brackets, casting dancing shadows across ancient symbols carved into every surface. The air was cold and still, heavy with the weight of centuries. My keys were gone.I looked down at my hands. The obsidian fragments had merged. Melted into my skin. I could feel them pulsing beneath the surface, alive and waiting."Welcome, Kaelen Blackwood."The voice came from everywhere and nowhere. Deep. Ancient. Resonant.I turned slowly. A figure stood at the center of the chamber. Tall. Cloaked in shadows. Its face was hidden, but its eyes burned with pale blue light."Who are you?""I am the first Observer. The one who bound himself to your bloodline a thousand years ago." The figure raised a hand. "You are the first of your line to reach this place since your father's death.""My father was here?""He was. Thirty years ago. He came seek
