Cristian ducked behind the nearby couch while Fenrir hid under a table to avoid the peacock’s ice attack. The icicles skewered the spot they had been standing before, tearing up the rug. He stared at the collection of large icicles the size of his arm before peeking around the corner of the couch. Mrs. Sellers and Katie appeared behind the peacock with dark expressions.
“My rug!” Mrs. Sellers wailed, cupping her cheeks with her hands.
“Where’s dad?” Katie asked, scanning the room.
He narrowed his eyes as he prepared to pull them into the dimensional space. That’s when a floating blue text box appeared in his vision.
[The targets are not within range. Please move closer to the target.]
Cristian nearly cursed aloud as he glared daggers at the text. Why was there suddenly a distance restriction? How close did he need to be in order to pull them into the dimensional space?
[Targets need to be within three feet of the user in order to be placed in the dimensional space.]
Three feet was pretty close. With the peacock spitting ice everywhere, it was going to be tricky getting in close. Fortunately, this wouldn’t be the first time he had to deal with a beast that could manipulate ice.
“Dad? Where are you?” Katie called out, searching for signs of her father.
Mrs. Sellers followed her lead and said, “Dear, this isn’t funny. Where are you?”
The peacock strutted forward, its head swerving from side to side, looking for him. Its feathers swayed back and forth with each step it took. Cristian glanced at Fenrir, who hadn’t moved from its spot from underneath the table. It almost seemed like the wolf was bored as it lazily wagged its tail.
[Carry on.]
Seeing that his companion was safe, he sprung into action. Cristian darted to the wall and yanked the hanging painting. The peacock instantly shot more icicles at him. He threw the painting in front of himself, letting it take the brunt of the attack while he ran towards the floor lamp.
“My painting! You’ll pay for that!” Mrs. Sellers shrieked.
“Oh no, you don’t,” Katie said as she pulled out a gun.
Unfortunately for her, she had terrible aim as she missed and hit a nearby vase. Shards of glass flew everywhere, making the two women flinch. Cristian lifted the floor lamp and swung it at the peacock, who had been aiming to attack again. It let out a squawk, and feathers flew in all directions. Before the two women could react, he threw the floor lamp at them, causing them to scream and scatter. Soon he was within range and dragged all of them into the dimensional space.
[You were quite reckless this time.]
He looked in Fenrir’s direction and saw the wolf walking towards him. Cristian bent down and lifted the wolf back into his arms.
“It worked out, didn’t it?” Cristian said as he studied the mess he made.
[You could have gotten shot.]
“I already expected they would bring weapons to a fight, but I’ll admit the gun caught me off guard. I didn’t think the Sellers would have a gun,” he admitted.
[Which is why it was foolish of you to charge right in? Do you think that just because I’m lending my powers to you that you’re invincible?]
“No, but I’ve dealt with bullet wounds before,” Cristian said.
The wolf shook its head at him, seemingly exasperated by Cristian’s answer. He chose to ignore Fenrir for now to check up on the Sellers in the dimensional space and was stunned to see that the peacock was missing. Where had it gone? Cristian had been certain that he had pulled the peacock into the dimensional space along with Mrs. Sellers and Katie.
Unable to find it anywhere, he asked, “Fenrir, do you have any clue why the peacock isn’t in the dimensional space?”
[That’s because summoning magic conflicts with the dimensional space. Rather than being trapped in the dimensional space, they’re sent back to where they came from until they’re called again.]
Cristian’s eyes widened as he asked, “Wait. Does that mean the connection between summoner and beast is severed?”
[No, not like that. The summoning ritual you humans have set up lets beasts return to their original space until they’re called upon by their summoner. How do you not know this? Even I know it.]
He admittedly forgot about that. With Fenrir’s size, it had been difficult to get around, so he had tried to send Fenrir back, but it never worked. Eventually, he forgot all about it when the apocalypse hit, and they always traveled together everywhere.
“So is that why they can’t summon their beasts in the dimensional space?” Cristian asked.
[Correct.]
Filing this information for later, he turned his attention back onto the Sellers family. The trio were in the midst of an argument as they talked about him. Cristian decided to leave them be for the moment to check out the rest of the house. Fortunately, despite having money, they hadn’t bothered to hire bodyguards or any kind of security. He had free reign to explore the place.
Taking this opportunity to find anything useful for the apocalypse, he turned the whole place upside down. Any unopened food was dragged out and sorted by expiration date. The same was done with any perishable products he uncovered since he had limited space in the dimensional space. Once that was done, his next targets were clothes or any other items that he deemed useful in the long run. Eventually, he had a decent pile of supplies he was going to take after dealing with the Sellers.
Speaking of the Sellers, he decided to check up on them to see if there were any changes, and his eyebrows nearly shot up. Katie was sobbing in one corner while her parents were in another. She seemed to be clutching her cheek, seemingly having been slapped. What had happened? Whatever it was, he was certain he could use this to his advantage.

Katie cursed, digging through her closet to find any old devices she might still have. Clothes were haphazardly tossed aside as she frantically searched for a phone or a laptop. Anything that would allow her to contact the outside world. She couldn’t believe her mother would confiscate her phone and other devices to keep her from contacting anyone. Hadn’t she seen how much of a monster Cristian was? There was no way he was going to let them live once he got everything he wanted from them. They had to call for help before it was too late.As she shoved a box aside, she heard something fall out and make a thud sound. A quick look revealed it was an old phone, and she snatched it up triumphantly. Her relief soon turned to dismay when she realized it wouldn’t turn on no matter what she pressed. The battery must have died after being left unused for so long in her closet. She had to find the charger for it.“Damn it,” she muttered to herself, searching through the box it fell out of.After

Katie’s knees finally gave out, and she collapsed to the ground. A horrible smell filled the air, and Cristian stepped back to avoid the puddle forming underneath her.“Katie!” Mrs. Sellers rushed forward to her daughter’s side, acting as a shield to protect her daughter. However, he was no longer paying any attention to them. His eyes were drawn to the blue text box that had appeared out of the corner of his vision.[The user has obtained a new ability and can exert an overwhelming presence that can paralyze those weaker than the user.]Cristian stared at the blue text incredulously before looking at Fenrir. The wolf didn’t bat an eye and even yawned at him. He raised an eyebrow and was tempted to ask right then and there if this meant he now had aura. Just thinking about it made him huff in amusement before turning his attention back to the cowering women.Given Katie’s reaction and the text box’s appearance, he had somehow used the power on her. However, it didn’t sound that great
Chapter 13: The Sellers Family (4)
The two women stared anxiously at Cristian, fearing what he intended to do with them. He combed a hand through his hair, berating himself for being softhearted.Cristian had intended only to grab Mrs. Sellers while keeping Mr. Sellers and Katie as hostages. It was the most reasonable option. He needed an adult to get the money, and Mr. Seller hadn’t been a choice from the beginning, as Cristian expected the man to try to save only his own skin. The man would likely choose to abandon his wife and child if it benefited him, but Cristian never expected him to be so ruthless, trying to kill them while trapped in the dimensional space.Just thinking about it enraged him, and Cristian placed Fenrir down as he stood up to kick the couch he had been sitting on. The women screamed and huddled close, refusing to look him in the face.“Stop that. I won’t hit you as long as you don’t try anything funny,” he said, sitting back down onto the armrest of the couch to avoid sitting on Fenrir.“Why sho

Katie sniffled, still feeling the burning sting of her father’s slap on her cheek. She couldn’t believe her father had slapped her. He had never raised a hand against her before. She had always been the apple of his eye, yet he had dared to slap her after she told him everything. If it weren’t for her mother, she was sure that her father would have hit her again.Just thinking about the reason for her father’s anger made her grit her teeth in frustration. The hand not touching her cheek curled into a fist as she imagined strangling Cristian with her bare hands. She was going to make him pay for this humiliation. He was going to regret ever crossing her and her family. Once they got out of this place, she was going to summon her beast like she should have from the start and let it tear him apart. Then she’ll turn that small wolf at his side into a new rug for her mother.“Well, isn’t this an interesting sight. It seems there’s a bit of family trouble going on here.” Cristian’s voice ec

“We’re here,” Katie said as they stood in front of the driveway to her home.Cristian took a moment to study the place. It was an impressive house with three stories and two fancy cars parked in the driveway. He was certain that the backyard was just as impressive, but it didn’t matter much in the end. What he was after was the money, not the property. Even if he somehow got his hands on the deed, there was no way he could sell it before the apocalypse started.“Before we go in, I want to make something clear,” he said, resting a hand on her shoulder. She shuddered before tentatively asking, “What?”“You are not to let them know about what happened between us. If I see any hint that you might sell me out…” he trailed off, letting her fill in the blank.Katie gritted her teeth and said, “I understand.”“Good. Now ladies first,” he said, indicating for her to go first. She glared at him before walking down the driveway to the front door. Katie rang the doorbell, and the door swung open.
