Chapter 1: A Desolate Landscape
Cristian stared out at the white landscape spread out before him, gripping his sword in his right hand. His eyes scanned for any signs of movement through the falling snow. Long moments passed before the white wolf next to him nudged his side. He reached out to pet its head, a smile forming behind the mask covering half his face.“It looks like there’s nothing out here, buddy. Let’s head back,” he said, running his hands through its thick fur.The wolf puffed, its tail wagging. Cristian removed his hand and turned to retrace his steps back to their shelter when the ground rumbled. In an instant, he spun around with his sword held in both hands. The ground continued to shake as his eyes darted around for the source. Then he spotted it. A dot was moving along the horizon. He couldn’t be sure if they had been spotted yet, but he wasn’t going to stick around to find out. Since he could even see something from this distance, it meant that whatever it was had to be huge.“Fenrir, we got to
Chapter 2: Cold End
Fenrir didn’t hesitate and bolted, taking large strides across the white expanse. Snow flew into the air with every stop it took. Each movement aggravated Cristian’s injuries, but he gritted his teeth and held his tongue. The wolf bounded into the forest and past the dead trees as white breath left its maw. Cristian glanced back occasionally for any signs of pursuit and saw nothing. However, he refused to let his guard down. After being caught off guard and losing his legs, he refused to also lose his life.Soon they burst through the other side of the forest. Suddenly, something erupted from the ground, and Fenrir barely avoided the creature bursting forth from the snow. Cristian’s eyes widened in horror at the frost worm staring down at them, or rather, its mouth was pointed towards them, as it had no eyes to see. What was it doing there? He had never seen one in the area before. If he had known, he would have made sure to avoid it completely. The only thing worse than a frost worm
Chapter 3: Second Chance
Cristian stared blankly at Fenrir, unable to comprehend what he was hearing. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words escaped his cold lips.“I will send you back to before the apocalypse began. It is up to you to make do with this second chance,” the wolf said as an unnatural golden glow enveloped it.He wanted to demand answers; however, darkness crept into the corner of his eyes, and he could no longer feel anything. The last thing he saw before the darkness consumed him was a flash of blinding bright light where Fenrir stood.“Cristian Snow,” a voice boomed. His eyes abruptly snapped open, and he was hit by flashing lights. Completely disoriented, he looked around, not quite processing what he was seeing. Where was he? Didn’t he just die? What happened to Fenrir? Why was it warm?“Cristian Snow,” the voice repeated with a harsher tone. That’s when it finally hit him exactly where and when he was. This was the day that ruined his life. It was the Day of Summoning.Cristian could
Chapter 4: The Aftermath
The moment the event was over and everyone started leaving, Cristian knew it was time to face the music. With a sigh, he slowly walked towards where he knew his family was. Each step felt like he was being lead to his execution, and given the new changes, it might very well be. When he finally found them, he saw that they were huddled together with grim expressions on their faces. None of them seemed to notice his approach until he was just a few feet away. That’s when his father spotted him and marched over to him.A punch square to the face knocked him flat off his feet, and his father barked, “You dare to show your face here. How dare you do this to the family.”Cristian licked his lips, tasting blood, as the small wolf snarled at his father. He brushed a soothing hand over its fur to keep it from acting rashly. Gritting his teeth, he sat up and stared at his so-called family. While he might not have been punched in the last life, it was still the same words. They would continue to
Chapter 5: Fenrir
Cristian thought he was hearing things. Did Fenrir, the wolf summon who had been by his side for many years, say it was actually the Fenrir of the apocalypse? No, he had to be hearing things. It was impossible. That Fenrir was just a myth that had been passed down for generations. There had never been real proof that the wolf existed.[What insolence. I’m right here.]“You really want me to believe that you’re the great beast of the end? Do you know how ridiculous it sounds?” Cristian said as he stared into the wolf’s eyes.[Who else could send you back in time to live life again? Tell me. What other beast has that kind of power?]He opened his mouth to answer, but no words escaped his lips because Fenrir was right. If not the beast of legends, what beast could have the power to give Cristian a second chance?Even so, it was hard to believe that he of all people could summon such a legendary beast. People throughout history have summoned all manner of beasts, from sea serpents to drag
Chapter 6: System
Every beast summoned through the summoning ritual always had some kind of ability or power that made it unique. A mouse summoned through the ritual could have the power to read minds, though this kind of matchup was quite rare. The power a beast had usually correlated with their nature, so a snake would likely have a poison-related power. They also typically only had one ability. The more powerful summons could have more than one, with the highest ever heard of being five.Cristian had dreamed of having a dragon as his companion even though he knew the chances were slim. His family had summoned relatively normal animals with decent abilities. His father and mother had a lion and lioness as their partners that could control fire.Considering Fenrir was the great beast of the end, he expected something great, but he could have never imagined what he heard next.[Given my current state, I believe the best option is to lend you my powers.]“...Excuse me?” he blurted out.[I can’t exert th
Chapter 7: Familiar Faces
Jagger Pitts. One of the first people outside his family to make his life a living hell. Despite not knowing each other outside of being in the same year as Cristian, Jagger had insisted on harassing him and making his life miserable. Cristian would have loved to tear him apart right then and there, but he knew it wasn’t the right time. He had to wait for the right moment to strike. When Cristian remained silent, Katie, the woman hanging off of Jagger, said, “Cat got your tongue? Oh, wait. I forgot. You got a puppy as your partner.”At her words, the group burst into laughter. Fenrir, incensed by their words, snarled at them, though it didn’t come off as threatening and only made the group laugh harder.“Did you see that? Is the puppy angry?” Brayan mocked.“What are you going to do? Nip at our feet?” Aidan asked.Cristian considered his options. Facing them head-on wasn’t an option no matter how much he would like to. For one, he was the one at a disadvantage. It was five against one
Chapter 8: Blackmail
“What the hell is going on?” Brayan demanded, panting heavily as he stared at the white walls surrounding the group.“How the hell should I know?” Aidan shot back as he leaned against one of the walls that he had tried to punch a hole through only to hurt his fist instead.Jeanine nervously nibbled on her thumbnail, staring down at her phone, as she tapped frantically on the screen. It continued to reiterate that there was no phone signal and to move into an area with coverage.“Why? Why isn’t it working?” she muttered, unable to tear her eyes away from the screen.Katie watched all of this play out and tugged at Jagger’s sleeve, asking, “Jagger, baby, what do we do?”Jagger’s grim expression didn’t falter, studying the scene before him. He hadn’t expected this to happen when he brought his gang to bully the greatest disgrace of the century. When Cristian had summoned his beast, everyone had been shocked. Everyone knew that there was always a light show during the summoning. The brigh
Chapter 9: One Day Later
As Cristian predicted, the group caved in within a day. Considering that none of them had ever experienced hardship in their entire life, it would have been more shocking if they could stand their ground. The moment he let them out of the dimensional space, they stared at him with a mixture of hate and fear.“I think you all learned your lesson, but if you need a reminder, I can always send you back there,” he remarked, causing nearly the entire group to shake their heads frantically.“We’re good,” Brayan said.“What he said,” Aidan said.“Then I expect you to bring me the five million in cash within the hour,” Cristian said, petting Fenrir on the head. The group sputtered before Katie blurted out, “Are you crazy? How are we supposed to get five million in cash in just an hour?”Without batting an eye, Cristian sent her back to the dimensional space. Jeanine screamed, nearly fainting, as she scrambled away from the empty spot Katie had once stood.“Any other objections?” Cristian aske
Chapter 10: The Sellers Family (1)
“We’re here,” Katie said as they stood in front of the driveway to her home.Cristian took a moment to study the place. It was an impressive house with three stories and two fancy cars parked in the driveway. He was certain that the backyard was just as impressive, but it didn’t matter much in the end. What he was after was the money, not the property. Even if he somehow got his hands on the deed, there was no way he could sell it before the apocalypse started.“Before we go in, I want to make something clear,” he said, resting a hand on her shoulder. She shuddered before tentatively asking, “What?”“You are not to let them know about what happened between us. If I see any hint that you might sell me out…” he trailed off, letting her fill in the blank.Katie gritted her teeth and said, “I understand.”“Good. Now ladies first,” he said, indicating for her to go first. She glared at him before walking down the driveway to the front door. Katie rang the doorbell, and the door swung open.
