“…then he walked right out and started laughing,” Leo explained, leaving both Darwin and Varrick in laughter.
Leo described the dream he had when he was a kid, as they travelled down to Ivandale. “Leo, it’s time we tell you about Scarlet Magic High School and how we got into it, although our backgrounds were not well known,” said Varrick, as he pulled out a mini pocket sac of water and took a sip. “I was going to ask but I forgot. Please, tell me,” Leo requested, as he stared at Varrick. “Abigail, Darwin and I are childhood friends. We grew up together, and we trained together but Abigail’s magical affinity surpassed ours, making her the strongest among us three,” Varrick spoke. “I was a little bit stronger, though,” Darwin raised his voice, speaking from the front of the cart, where he sat and he controlled the horses. Upon hearing what Darwin said, Varrick began to laugh. “Only in your wildest imagination. Remember when she flung you across the class when you asked her o-” “Ahh, that’s enough. You’ve proven your point,” Darwin interrupted. Varrick continued to laugh but Leo did not get the slightest idea as to what was happening. “Anyway, Leo what I was trying to say was she became our leader because she was the strongest. At that time, Abigail’s mother so happened to know the demon king and with his sponsorship, we were able to enroll in Scarlet Magic High School,” Varrick continued. “Wait…wait…wait, so you attended the Magic high school, then why did Master Darwin disagree for me to got there?” Leo asked, curious. “I told you already. You can become an easy target in a place where magic is everything, especially when it’s included in your school work,” Darwin responded. “Exactly, he was just worried,” Varrick supported. “Although we attended the high school together, our classes were different. It was separated by-” “Sorry,” Darwin said, after enterring into a pot hole, making the cart shake vigorously. “It was separated by how strong your magic affinity was. It might have changed now but then, I’m not sure. When you pass the entrance exam, you’ll find out,” Varrick spoke. “Entrance exam?” Leo asked. There was a brief moment of silence, before Varrick spat out the water in his mouth. “THE ENTRANCE EXAM!” Varrick exclaimed. “We had totally forgotten,” Darwin responded. Leo was confused. What was all the fuss about? “Is the entrance exam that hard?” Leo questioned, trying to understand the tension caused by mentioning the exam. “Okay, see,” Varrick started as he took a deep breath. “The entrance exam is divided into two; the written exam and the practical exam. The written exam is mostly about the history of magic, the divine tree and also about the mythical creatures and monsters. Meanwhile, the practical exam is about showcasing your magical power and affinity. They test the level of your speed, accuracy, response to emergency and also aptitude to problems.” “Let’s not forget the brain teaser,” Darwin spoke. “Brain teaser?” Leo replied. “What’s that?” Varrick chuckled. “It is the most difficult part of the practical exam but it’s left for you to discover what is about. It differs from person to person,” he responded. “Wow, sounds a little uhm… mysterious,” Leo said, stroking his chin with his palms. “There are many flies here.” “We’re finally here,” Darwin said as the walked into a lavishing gate with the name IVANDALE, written on it. “Beautiful,” Leo whispered as a smile grew on his face. “I know right?” Varrick replied. “Welcome to Aranthia Ivandale, the city of sorcerers and my hometown.” “And my own home town too,” Darwin spat. “No need to be violent, Darwin,” Varrick said as he moved closer to Darwin and rubbed his hair. Leo giggled a little, watching Darwin and Varrick pick on themselves. “Aranthia,” Leo said. Varrick and Darwin stopped teasing themselves. Varrick glimpsed at Leo and said, “Abigail and you lived in Eldona, it’s at the other side of Ivandale so you won’t know this city.” “Yeah,” Leo said as he stared into the city, feeding his eyes with the view. “Let’s take a pause and get some food. I think we should go there, Varrick,” Darwin said stopping the cart and glaring at Varrick with a smirk. “Yes, we should,” Varrick replied as he returned the smirk. A few minutes later, Darwin, Varrick and Leo found themselves in a brothel. “What the hell are we looking for here? I’m still a mi-” “Shh, just go with the flow,” Varrick closed Leo’s mouth. “We’re hear to meet someone very important. Someone we have not seen in a very long time.” “Leo, don’t forget. You are not Abigail’s son here but you are a lost child that we found in the woods and adopted. Abigail is rather known around here, so to avoid any form of attention, try to keep your identity hidden,” Darwin said as they all walked into the brothel. “Ay ay, Captain,” Leo said, sarcastically as he giggled. They walked into the brothel, which was dark with loud music. It was rather empty, which they wanted. “Good, exactly how we wanted it,” Darwin said as they walked through the serving parlour and into a common room with brighter light. It was so bright that their eyes had to adjust before they could see a thing. “Var, Dar, its you. After like forever,” a red hair, slender woman said. Her eyes as red as a crescent moon and her skin as pale as snow. She jumped on them, embracing them with joy. “Sydney, how have you been?” Varrick asked. “You’ve still not aged a bit, witch,” Darwin complemented, sarcastically. Sydney giggled it off and rubbed their hair with her hands. “And who is the young lad behind you,” she asked, taking a quick glimpse at him. Leo cleared his throat and gulped hard. “I’m Leo,” he responded, staring at her as their eyes met. “Who was she?” Leo thought to himself. “Why did they have to see her?”

CHAPTER 93: ARE YOU....?
Cold sweat soaked both the pillow and silk beddings. Anaya's breathing moved fast while her heartbeat threatened to break her heart free from her chest. Everything appeared misty while the room continued spinning. Her panic caused yet another hyperventilation episode. But before she could descend into a further state of panic, soft warm hands took hold of her body, which were contrary to her own clammy, rough and pale hands. A gentle voice asked "Are you okay?" Anaya replied "Yes, I'm fine" through hurried nodding. Sydney gave Anaya a glass of water as she spoke. Anaya took the cup without a second thought and drank so quickly you’d think she’d been stranded in the desert for days. Droplets of water trickled from her lips down her neck due to her haste. Once the water was finished, she handed the cup back to Sydney, mumbling, “Thank you.” Sydney dropped the glass next to the bed before saying "You're welcome." She watched Anaya breathe while holding her hand and a gentle smi
CHAPTER 92: HEY ANAYA
Varrick sat by himself with a good book, Darwin sharpened his daggers and Sydney knitted sweaters in a chair as they waited for dinner. Then suddenly Leo and Jason appeared before them looking exhausted and distraught. Sydney smiled after recovering from the jump scare; “Looks like someone's acing the conjuring class.” With a few more praises to offer in their stocks, Varrick and Darwin prepared to join but stopped when they saw the girl Jason’s arms, pale and lifeless. "What happened?" Putting his book down and walking toward them, Varrick asked. "She just started hyperventilating, we don't know." Leo replied. "How long has it been?" Varrick began checking her pulse and vitals as he questioned them. For a moment, Jason's voice shook just softly and he could barely get the words out, "Thirty minutes… maybe more." Varrick inspected her palm, noticing the freshly reopened wound. He exchanged meaningful glances with Darwin, who had also caught sight of the injury. "Hand h
CHAPTER 91: SON OF LOTHR
"I'm not insinuating anything, Leo. Don't you get it? Sylvia is one of them." Leo turned to Jason and asked, "You don't think that's true, do you?" Jason averted his gaze, finding it hard to respond. "Jason?" Leo pressed, his hurt evident. Noticing the change in his tone, Jason quickly said, "I just think we shouldn't point fingers just yet... Although her relationship with the inspector is rather odd. Why didn't she tell us she knew her from the beginning?" Leo nodded and took a few steps forward. "Leo..." Jason called out, trying to salvage the situation, but Leo wasn't ready to listen. He simply continued walking away from where they stood. "Leo, wait. Anaya, say something," Jason urged. Neither of them seemed to care at that moment. "Let him leave. Once he has a clear head, he'll come back, and we can all go home," Anaya muttered, trying her hardest to stay calm. "You can't be serious, Anaya," Jason exclaimed. But Anaya's attention had shifted to a different subject en
CHAPTER 90: ONE OF THEM
They finally reached the open window but couldn't go in just yet. The principal was still in the room, and he looked livid. "Alright, Lady Sylvia, since you want to be difficult, let's see how smug you get when you're face-to-face with Miss Renee." Sylvia's face drained completely of color once the principal said those words. He grumbled a few more words and walked out in a huff. The sound of the door slamming made Sylvia jerk in fear. She looked incredibly pale, and her lips were cracked and had already started to bleed. Anaya's eyes softened slightly when she saw her, but looking at her palm again, she knew that she needed answers, and the sooner she got them, the better. They waited a few minutes before climbing in through the window. "Hello, Sylvia. How are you feeling?" Anaya asked, her attitude a little nonchalant. Sylvia quickly sat up, her body tensing and her eyes widening as she stammered, "What are you doing here? You can't be in here!" "Why? Something to hide, Sylvi
CHAPTER 89: LEAVE
"The principal went to see her. They probably think she's the one who did that to the field," Leo muttered, constantly pacing right outside the principal's office. Jason and Anaya gave each other meaningful glances, visibly trying to piece everything together. After Sylvia had fainted in front of them, they quickly rushed her to the school nurse. The school principal had gone in moments later, sweating profusely, with his eyes widened in shock. "Well, isn’t she?" Anaya asked sternly. "Of course not," Leo snapped, he never wasted any time when it came to defending Sylvia. Anaya swept her hands through her hair, her annoyance growing by the minute as she spoke. "My goodness, open your eyes, Leo. The evidence is overwhelming. Sylvia hasn’t been in school in days. I didn’t even see her at the gathering—did you?" she said, pointing at Jason. Jason tilted his head thoughtfully before slowly shaking his head. "Exactly. And then, the minute she shows up, she’s bruised and battered at
CHAPTER 88: A MESSAGE
The club festivities faded and the real party began in the school. They made their way into the school auditorium and noticed all that had been laid out. Music, amazing snacks, even a huge disco ball—the very best Scarlet Magic High School had to offer, and yet somehow someone didn't seem to like it. "This party is lame," Sebastian sighed, swirling his drink with a straw. "Not as lame as the ones royals throw," Leo remarked. Sebastian's eyes widened, his shock noticeable in his expression. He quickly turned to Jason, looking for some kind of validation. Royal gatherings had always been the talk of the kingdom; people who had the luxury of being in attendance just couldn't stop talking about it. Jason noticed Sebastian's gaze and slowly replied, "You'd be surprised." "That can't be true. Have you been to one, Anaya?" Sebastian asked, hoping she'd give him the answer he had been believing all his life. However, Anaya hadn't said a word for a long time. "Anaya? W..." Sebastia
