One of Four

The support window lost eight seconds before Jace reached the first stair.

Seraphina took his left side. Noah took the right, careful of the arm hanging nearly useless beside him.

ANCHOR SUPPORT WINDOW: 00:02:33.

Vault Integrity: 31%.

Safe Zone Barrier: 30%.

Health: 29/420.

Charge: 0/140.

"Comforting numbers," Jace said.

Noah adjusted his grip. "Which one?"

"The one that still has two digits."

The Anchor Room door had no handle. Four shallow circles surrounded the older Spire seal. One carried pale light. The other three remained dark.

Seraphina touched the glowing circle and pulled her hand back.

"This is claimant architecture."

"You sound surprised."

"I am surprised it predates the vault. Sunchain did not build this."

"They built on top of it."

"That may be worse."

The door read Jace before he reached it.

ANCHOR ROOM ACCESS

Territory Claim: Contested.

Claimant: Jace.

Authority: ERROR.

Reality Anchor: DORMANT.

Living Witness: Noah Venn.

Entry permitted.

The seal opened.

Four stone columns stood around a hollow center. Human cables and pale conduits joined inside the columns.

No throne waited in the center.

There was only a metal ring set into the floor, wide enough for one person to stand inside.

Noah looked at it. "That is where it wants you."

"It usually is."

Breach Sight crossed the room.

ANCHOR NETWORK DASHBOARD

Local Structure: Manhattan Primary Node.

Connected Territory: Forbidden Palace / Sunchain Vault / Safe Zone.

Active Anchors: 0/4.

Available Anchor: Claimant Body.

Alternative Anchors: LOCKED.

Network Stability: 6%.

Vault Integrity: 31%.

Safe Zone Barrier: 30%.

The room shuddered.

Vault Integrity: 31% -> 27%.

Safe Zone Barrier: 30% -> 28%.

Seraphina read the alternative field. "There should be physical anchors."

"There are. Locked."

"Then we unlock them."

"Two minutes."

"Using your body is exactly what the Spire has been training you to accept."

Noah looked up toward the vault. A chamber alarm cut off abruptly, then returned weaker.

"And refusing will kill people who never agreed to be part of the lesson," he said.

Seraphina faced him. "I know."

"No, you know the principle. I know the chamber."

Her expression tightened, but she did not retreat from the point.

"The Spire accepted him because it can use him as a claimant," she said. "An anchor is more than support. It tells the territory what must remain true. If he binds himself here, damage to the vault, shield, throne, and conduits can route into him. If someone captures the Spire later, the bond may become the chain they use to capture Jace."

Noah looked at the ring again. "And if he does not?"

"Four hundred twelve preserved people lose structural support. The barrier above may fail with them."

Noah's answer came quietly. "Then both choices are cages. One simply has more people inside it."

Jace opened the activation menu.

REALITY ANCHOR

Current State: Unstable Function.

Purpose: Preserve connected structures against deletion, displacement, or claim revocation.

Available Binding Method: Claimant Core.

Benefits:

Vault stabilization.

Safe Zone foundation support.

Territory revocation resistance.

Costs:

Continuous claimant binding.

Shared structural damage.

Restricted displacement beyond territory.

Unknown throne dependency.

Activate?

Breach Sight found the hidden line beneath the costs.

HIDDEN CLAIMANT CONDITION

Anchor authority may be inherited by a successful conqueror.

Seraphina saw it. "There. If someone takes the territory, they inherit the line attached to you."

Jace looked at Noah. "Can consent block inheritance?"

"Mine blocks ownership from reaching me. It does not stop the claim from hurting you."

"Helpful distinction."

The support window reached one minute.

VAULT EMERGENCY

Critical Chambers: 7.

First preservation failure: 00:00:54.

Safe Zone foundation breach: 00:00:47.

Liam appeared through the territory channel. Behind him, survivors were moving away from the eastern wall while blue light rained from the barrier like sparks.

"Tell me you found something."

"Found an ancient room that wants my body."

Liam nodded once. "Of course you did."

Emma pushed into the channel. "The correct answer is no."

"The other answer drops the vault."

Emma went silent long enough to tell him she understood. "Then make it temporary."

The System offered no temporary option.

Jace stepped into the ring.

Seraphina caught his shirt. "You are allowed to admit this frightens you."

"It frightens me."

He had spent the night treating every demand as something to outlast, outthink, or break. The ring was different because it offered a result he needed and a cost he could not pretend was only physical. He could save the vault and strengthen the shield, but the act would make the Spire harder to separate from him. Protection would gain roots. So would the prison hidden inside it.

Noah entered the circle's edge without touching the center.

"You are witnessed," he said. "You did not choose the cost freely. You chose the people with the cost attached."

The panel changed.

LIVING WITNESS ACCEPTED.

Coercive circumstance: RECORDED.

Inheritance immunity: UNAVAILABLE.

Future challenge right: PRESERVED.

"Best bad contract tonight," Jace said.

Noah's breathing pulled once more through the Free Claim.

FREE CLAIM MAINTENANCE

Health: 29/420 -> 28/420.

He activated Reality Anchor.

The ring closed around both ankles.

Health: 28/420 -> 16/420.

Corruption Load: 92% -> 93%.

REALITY ANCHOR: ACTIVE.

Proficiency: 0% -> 14%.

Claimant Binding: 0% -> 31%.

Vault Integrity: 27% -> 46%.

Safe Zone Barrier: 28% -> 39%.

FREE CLAIM ROUTE UPDATED

Eligible Route: Territory Anchor.

Body Conversion Rate: 1 Health per 25 breaths -> 1 Health per 70 breaths.

The room drove upward through him. Jace felt every chamber settle, every shield fracture stop widening, every buried conduit remember the shape it had been built to hold.

Then he tried to lift one foot.

The ring let him move.

The Spire did not.

TERRITORY BINDING ESTABLISHED

Maximum unassisted range from Primary Node: 1.7 city blocks.

Jace looked at Seraphina.

She had been right.

Above them, four hundred twelve chambers remained standing.

Noah had been right too.

Reality Anchor held the vault together by binding Jace more tightly to the Spire.
