Caleb was to his right, one hand raised into the gold field. Elijah stood behind them, face turned toward Noah and the line of pain connecting him to Jace.

Seraphina moved between Theodore and the coats where Jace sat.

"The last offer was refused," she said.

"This is not an offer," Caleb replied.

Theodore removed one glove.

Black-gold lines covered his palm, branching from the wrist where the loyalty lock had corrected him. They looked less like veins than instructions written into flesh.

"Move Noah away from him," Theodore said.

"No," Jace answered.

"It will collapse you before it stabilizes him."

That was the worst part. Theodore did not need anger to attack. He only needed to believe violence was the final form of care.
