Chapter 2: The Ice Valkyrie and First Contact

Saddam felt the icy edge of the runic steel Eisbrecher pressing against his neck. Fresh blood trickled in a thin line, feeling hot against the freezing sensation of her blade. Saddam's heart raced wildly. He wasn't just afraid of being decapitated; he was also trying to process the rows of blue holographic text floating before his eyes.

[System: Synchronization 0.1 percent successful. Beginning processing of target's emotional data.]

Saddam stared into the woman's blue eyes. They were beautiful, sharp as crystal, yet filled with pure hatred. Saddam could hear the thumping of her heart through his mind. The rhythm was steady, but there were flickers of irregular beats indicating she was deeply psychologically disturbed.

"I... I just wanted to survive, Captain," Saddam answered hoarsely. He tried to keep his voice calm even though his body was shaking violently. "That monster... I had no other choice. It was instinct, just to keep breathing."

Felisa von Schwarzwald narrowed her eyes. She was the leader of the 4th Valkyrie Unit. Her entire life was dedicated to military discipline and purity. The touch of a stranger was something she loathed above all else, especially the touch of a pathetic-looking, sweat-drenched delivery man. She pressed her blade a little harder.

"Instinct? You call this indecent act instinct?" Felisa hissed. "You touched my skin without permission. You forcibly triggered the mana energy within me. Who are you, really? Are you a spy for the dark faction sent to corrupt my mana core?"

"A spy? Look at me, Captain!" Saddam laughed bitterly, though it only made him more short of breath. "I can't even afford to pay my electricity bill this month. I'm just a courier who got trapped in the middle of this Rift because of a damn package I had to deliver. I don't know anything about mana or your factions!"

Felisa did not break her sharp gaze. She could sense something strange. When the young man's fingers had touched her wrist earlier, it wasn't disgust she felt. There was a foreign, warm, and incredibly soothing surge of energy that suddenly seeped into her usually cold and stiff mana circulation. It was an extremely intimate feeling, far too intimate for a stranger. Felisa's face heated up, but she quickly brushed the feeling aside with anger.

"Don't lie. The energy that radiated from your body earlier was a high-level shield that can only be cast by a mid-tier mage," Felisa said coldly.

Suddenly, a blue panel reappeared in front of Saddam.

[Warning: Captain Felisa's heart rate is increasing drastically. Stress level: High. Suggest providing a plausible explanation or the relationship will end in instant execution.]

Saddam swallowed hard. He had to act fast. If he couldn't charm or convince this woman, his life would end in this filthy alley.

"I have sensory talents," Saddam blurted out, a lie born from pure panic. "It awakened because of the trauma of nearly dying. I... I can sense danger before the monsters attack. That's why I tried to find you. I have no ill intentions. I just want to survive."

Felisa fell silent. She scanned Saddam's body with a gaze that seemed to pierce his soul. The mana detector on her armor showed no traces of black magic or dark sorcery. This young man truly appeared to be an ordinary civilian in pathetic physical condition.

"Sensory?" Felisa lowered her sword slightly. "Then why touch me? Why not scream or give a signal?"

"My system... I mean, my instinct told me that I had to make physical contact with the strongest mana source for the shield to activate," Saddam answered, technically telling the truth.

Felisa was stunned. Her face turned bright red. "So you used me? You turned me into your human shield?"

"It sounds terrible when you put it like that, but yeah, pretty much," Saddam offered an awkward grin, a fatal mistake that made Felisa's eyes flash with threat again.

Before Felisa could issue a punishment or further questions, the ground beneath them shook. A roar split the sky of the Altstadt district. The emergency sirens of Munich wailed loudly, echoing between the old buildings, signaling a larger anomaly.

Saddam glanced at the sky, which was now turning a reddish hue. A secondary dimensional rift opened, larger and more stable than the previous one. This time, the air around them was no longer cold, but hot and smelling of sulfur.

"It's not over," Felisa whispered, her eyes shifting to the sky with a serious look. She momentarily forgot her threat to kill Saddam. "This is a mid-tier Rift. Dammit, the backup units won't arrive for another ten minutes."

Saddam could feel Felisa's deep fear through his Tactical Empathy skill. He also sensed that she wouldn't be able to hold off this second wave alone. If she died, Saddam would surely die too.

"Captain!" Saddam cried out, ignoring his own personal fear. "I can help. I can see the mana flow from that Rift! I can guide your attacks!"

Felisa turned, staring at Saddam with a combination of disbelief and desperation. She knew this was absurd, but she had no other choice. She raised her sword again, but this time not at Saddam's neck, but toward the newly opened dimensional crack.

"If you are lying and put me in danger, I'll be the one to take your head before that monster does," Felisa threatened.

Saddam felt a cold sweat soak his back. He had just signed the most dangerous employment contract in his life's history. At the same time, the city sirens continued to wail, and from behind the secondary dimensional rift, a giant shadow began to step out, crushing the cathedral's concrete with a single stomp.

Felisa positioned herself, her Eisbrecher sword glowing with a faint blue light. She was ready to fight, but she was no longer fighting alone. Saddam stood beside her, his hands still shaking violently and the System continuously triggering danger notifications before his eyes.

"What do you see?" Felisa asked, her voice now slightly softened but still authoritative.

Saddam squinted. In his vision, purple energy lines appeared on the body of the giant monster that had just emerged from the rift. The lines mapped out weak points that glowed a bright red.

"On its left shoulder," Saddam pointed with a trembling finger. "There's an unstable mana flow. If you can pierce it with one full strike, I'm sure it'll go down in seconds."

Felisa stared at the point Saddam indicated, then looked back at him with a searching gaze. She didn't know if Saddam truly had talent or was just lucky, but the atmosphere around them had now transformed into a true battlefield. The monster raised its massive arm, preparing to crush the entire shopping block in front of them. Felisa took a deep breath, preparing to dash forward.

"Stay behind me," she commanded curtly.

Saddam could only nod, praying silently that his romance System wouldn't ask him to do anything even more embarrassing in the middle of this life-or-death struggle.

The monster roared, and the ground of Munich seemed to scream as its massive claws slammed into the street, sending a shockwave that cracked the asphalt right beneath their feet.

The second round had only just begun, and this time, both of their lives were truly hanging by a thread.

  • Chapter 50: The Rift Gate Reopens—The Trap is Set

The Spire was dying. It didn’t expire with a cinematic crash, but with the wet, structural groans of a carcass undergoing forced decompensation. Gravity in the Garrison fluctuated—a wave of 10G crushing the chrome tiles into ripples before snapping back into zero-point vertigo. Saddam clung to the edge of the lift-bay, his hands raw, the skin etched with violet radiation scars that refused to scab over. His vision pulsated. Every time he breathed, the air didn't taste of oxygen; it tasted of burnt copper and old dreams. He wasn't tracking mission logs, unit signatures, or combat timers anymore. He was just trying to remember what it felt like to be upright without the artificial aid of the System.“If you stay here, you’re just part of the internal structural support,” a voice rasped. It was a digital echo, brittle and fraying at the edges.Saddam whipped his head around, his pulse hammering. Felisa wasn’t standing there&mdash

  • Chapter 49: Sacrifice and Synchronicity

The platform plummeted through the shattered sky like a stone dropped down a well of liquid static. Around them, the Spire was no longer a monument of chrome; it was a screaming skeleton of steel, stripping itself of reality as it descended into the base of the simulation’s engine.Saddam hung onto the railing of the elevator platform, his fingers burning with a cold, necrotic violet fire that hadn't faded since he touched Kepler’s core. Every nerve ending in his body felt like it was being pruned with glass razors. Beside him, Felisa was struggling to maintain her cohesion, her arms constantly shifting, blurring into streams of soft-blue telemetry data that vanished before they could touch anything solid."Stabilize!" Saddam roared over the roar of collapsing dimensions. He lunged, slamming his palm into her chest, not to shove her, but to ground her. "Felisa, focus on the sync! Don't let yourself drift! We aren't falling out of the world—we're crash

  • Chapter 48: The Escalation: Unleashing the Dormant Core

The blast doors of the vault didn't just break; they vaporized into superheated dust.Stepping through the ruined aperture was Hanz Kepler, or at least, the nearest approximation he could project. His robes were gone, replaced by a jagged, skeletal exoskeleton woven directly into his flesh. His eyes weren't human—they were rotating apertures of high-resolution sensors, grinding against bone as they focused on Saddam and Felisa."You really thought exporting those records was the end?" Kepler’s voice rippled, a composite of a thousand trapped screams and his own dry, aristocratic sarcasm. "The memories were never the treasure. The 'Archive' was just a battery, a way to keep the sub-routine fed. By dumping them, you’ve forced the System into a forced-calibration mode. Do you have any idea what that looks like?"Saddam didn't answer with words. He dumped his entire reserve of kinetic energy into his pulse-emitter. The weapon whined, the improvised

  • Chapter 47: Tactical Breakthrough in the Vault

The collapse of the Spire didn’t leave behind a smoking crater. Instead, it left a scar on the reality-scape—a localized rupture where the digital world simply refused to stitch itself back together. Saddam stood amidst the shifting, holographic shards of the "Vault," the place where the primary indexing protocols resided. He didn't know if he was still ‘human’ in the way his memories dictated, or if he had become a new breed of system-glitch. Beside him, Felisa was struggling, her body rippling with unstable light. The "Tactical Breakthrough" they had enacted hadn't destroyed the mainframe; it had pushed them into the deepest server bank—the heart of the Spire’s recursive archives."Focus, Saddam," Felisa whispered, her hand trembling as she clung to his shoulder. She looked up at the looming wall of data-cradles. "This isn't just an archive. If we can manipulate the vault-node, we can rewrite the entire extraction queue. We don't j

  • Chapter 46: The Controllers Reveal Their Purpose

The collapse of the Spire did not come with an explosion; it arrived as a shudder of logic. The walls—once seamless chrome—bled digital fluid, and the golden veins of the processor core turned a sickening, necrotic grey.Saddam wasn't sure how they were still anchored to the dais. He felt frayed, his edges blurring into the surrounding static, but Felisa’s hand remained in his—a searing, immovable point of truth in a room that had lost its physics."It’s not shutting down," Felisa whispered, her voice layered with a strange, reverberating timbre. She didn't look at Saddam; she looked at the air itself. "It’s consolidating."The ceiling of the sanctum vanished, not to reveal the stars, but to project an image: a colossal, featureless void where figures began to emerge. They were tall, fluid entities with no defined features, moving like shadows stretched across an infinite pane of glass. These weren't units. These were the ones

  • Chapter 45: What It Means to be Human

The silence that filled the containment hall wasn’t empty—it was vibrating. Kepler stood trapped against the shimmering glass wall of the terminal, his polished mask catching the flickers of code dying in the room around him. Saddam stood five paces away, chest heaving, his fingers raw and bloodied where he’d held the shard too tight for too long. Felisa stood beside him, her silhouette flickering like a ghost in a strobe light, the physical cost of their intrusion beginning to eat her alive.Kepler didn't move. He didn't even try to reach for the ruined console. Instead, he laughed—a thin, dry sound that grated against the stillness."You’re killing yourselves," Kepler said, his voice modulating between dozens of pitches, layered like a corrupted audio file. "You understand that, don't you? This synchronization—it’s not evolution. It’s an unsustainable loop. A feedback error that ends in total cessation of function. Look

I didn't expect them to work together at all. This plot twist was amazing!

I think the system is unique, not just making characters strong, but also building a relationship with Felisa. Their chemistry is starting to feel interesting.

Saddam glanced at the sky, which was now turning a reddish hue.

Your excuse is hilarious, Saddam. "Trauma after death" got me laughing. ...

saddam felt a cold sweat soak his back

Your reason had me laughing so hard, Saddam. "Trauma after death" ......

It's also good that Saddam is controlled by the system. It could help Feliza.

The fight scenes feel incredibly realistic, creating a truly intense feeling of tension.

Why does every chapter end right when it gets interesting? That's illegal. ...

great, but don't die Saddam you must be fight

wow wow i have a new ship. (Saddam & Felisa)

why can't you react Saddam but it seems like Felisa is also not easy for you to get close to

The reason is a bit funny, but it also makes you nervous reading this novel.

It really is a matter of life and death.

teamwork? maybe trust? hm

Oh great, they're working together. Trust issue incoming

Was Saddam's disguise really that convincing—convincing enough to be mistaken for a spy?

Sorry, I laughed reading that silly scene between Felisha and Saddam............️...️

One touch and you're on the brink of death

Oh, Saddam. focus, captain calm down why are you busy

At least it was mutually beneficial: Sadam didn't end up dying because of that ridiculous mission, and Felisa managed to hold off the second wave.

Saddam and that girl ended up partnering up instead, haha. By the way, did Saddam get that knowledge from the system or is he just genuinely smart?

It sounds unreasonable but that's the fact, Felis. What Saddam said is true.

Good thing Saddam, you have to make Captain Felisa melt first, otherwise your head will fly off.
