Selune opened the door—and froze.
Standing there, with a smug grin, was none other than her so-called fiancé, Ken Wells.
“What the hell are you doing here?” Selune blinked, completely caught off guard.
She didn’t expect him to show up, especially not with a small army of bodyguards behind him.
“Don’t wanna see me?” Ken smirked, flicking his cigarette to the side. “How about you invite your fiancé in for a drink?”
“It’s not a good time. I’m busy.”
Selune quickly tried to shut the door, but Ken slammed his hand against it, stopping her.
The sour, stale scent of booze on him made her scrunch up her face in disgust.
“Seriously? You’ve got some nerve!”
The door was opened halfway, but that was enough for Ken to spot a tall guy standing behind her.
His anger flared, and he crushed his cigarette underfoot.
“I bet you're afraid people will find out you're sneaking around behind my back, huh?”
“Shut up! Or I’ll call the cops!”
“You know I’m not lying, and you know I’m not afraid of the cops,” Ken barked, his eyes red and wild.
“If it wasn’t for my informants, I wouldn’t even know how many times you’ve cheated on me!”
“You’re insane! That’s slander!” Selune snapped, her voice shaking with rage.
Ken scoffed, his bloodshot eyes narrowing.
"Nonsense? You think I don’t know? I’ve got sources, Selune. I fucking know how many guys you’ve been fooling around with behind my back!"
Suddenly, Arthur’s voice cut through, calm yet commanding.
“That’s enough.”
Selune turned, startled. Arthur stepped forward.
His piercing gaze locked onto Ken’s, and the air seemed to grow heavier.
"I can vouch for her. Selune is innocent."
Ken’s bravado faltered as Arthur drew closer. He looked at him, and for the first time, he felt a wave of panic.
Like a child being scolded by an unforgiving authority.
“W-who the hell are you?” Ken stammered, taking a step back.
Arthur’s gaze was cool and unwavering.
"It doesn’t matter who am I. What matters is, Selune saved me." He met Ken’s eyes without flinching. "She is a good person."
He took a step closer. “If you’re really her fiancé, then act like one. Trust her.”
Ken’s face twisted in fury. "Fuck it! Who the hell do you think you are?"
His voice cracked as he pointed a shaking finger at Arthur.
"You're the one she's been sleeping with, right? Ha! Do you wanna make a fool out of me?
I’m calling off the wedding! I’ll make sure everyone knows what kind of trash the Herbert family raised!”
His words hung in the air, sharp and venomous.
Before anyone could respond, the screech of tires cut through the standoff.
A sleek car screeched to a stop, and a middle-aged woman in a fur coat stumbled out, nearly tripping over her high heels as she hurried toward them.
Her clinking jewelry announced her arrival as much as her panicked voice.
“Oh my God, Mr. Wells! Do you remember me? I’m Selune’s mother! You were just kidding, right?”
Ana’s tone was sugary with desperation as she hurried toward them.
She’d been on her way to pick up Selune when she heard the drama from the beach house.
With the wedding so close, she didn’t want any more trouble. The mention of Ken calling off the engagement sent her heart racing.
““This engagement was approved by your father, Mr. Wells.” Ana’s voice grew shrill as she looked at Ken carefully, trying to gauge his mood. “Did Selune do something to offend you?”
Ken didn’t answer, his eyes flicking to Arthur with barely concealed hostility.
So Ana turned to her daughter, her voice rising in fury.
“Selune! Apologize to Mr. Wells, right now!”
