THE ACCIDENT

"Why are you harassing my girlfriend?" Asked Jacob, holding Mason's gaze.

Natalia's face beams the moment she sees Jacob. She turns to Mason with irritation. "Babe, can you believe this lowlife is accusing me of stealing his money!"

Jacob scoffs, staring at Mason. "Have you lost it, Mason, or is this the aftermath of your poverty?" His eyes were sharp as those words flew out of his mouth.

Mason ignored his insult, as the only one that hurt was Natalia's. "All I want is the money this cheater took from my bag," Mason replied, turning to her.

"Did you hear that? Mason just called Natalia Hallow a cheater. What's going on? Were they dating?" a curious voice murmured from the crowd.

"How can you say that? Natalia would never date someone as poor as him," May, who was beside her friend, retorted at the statement.

"Give me back my money, Natalia!" Mason yelled, causing Helen to shiver at his sudden outburst.

Jacob, who saw this, pretended to be shocked when he heard Mason's words. He burst into laughter, and his friend behind him followed suit. "Is this how you beg for money nowadays, Mason!" Jacob said, holding his stomach.

Mason ignored his stunt and kept a straight face at Helen, who overcame her shock and joined in Jacob's laughter. She was acting like she never even knew Mason, whom she had been dating for six months.

"I know you are poor, but has poverty made you this delusional to accuse my girlfriend of not only cheating but stealing from you?" Another laughter erupted from both Jacob and his friend's circle. "Do you even have anything worth stealing?'

Mason gritted his teeth. He still couldn't believe he would wake up one day and the girl he loved would turn into a two-faced cheating bastard who would leave for money.

"Is this your way of getting back at her because she turns you down after you confess your love?" Jacob asked between his laughter.

"Mason Williams confesses to Natalia! What was he thinking? Was he expecting Natalia to leave Jacob and date a broke guy like him," The student who heard this burst into laughter?

Mason's face twitches with anger, and his heart tugs with pain. It seems like the entire school knows Natalia and Jacob had been dating except him. He hated himself for not only loving such a person but also getting manipulated by love.

"How much do you need?" Jacob's voice dragged Mason from his trance. "A dollar? Hundred dollars?" Jacob ridiculed. He put his hands into his front pocket and pulled out a white envelope, the same one that contained Mason's salary. Mason recognized the envelope, making his body stiffen with anger, but he remained calm.

"Here you go," Jacob tossed the envelope to the ground. "This contains a five hundred dollars; take it as a good gesture from me." He said with a proud smile.

The crowd around gasps in surprise at Jacob's action.

"Oh my God, Jacob is just too generous." a voice from the crowd was thrilled at his action.

"He even gave someone who accused his girlfriend of cheating a thousand dollars to show how generous he is."

"He's a real man,"

Mason knew Natalia and Jacob planned everything, knowing he would come for his money so they could both humiliate him. Jacob has successfully fooled them into thinking he was the owner of the money.

Mason's eyes daggered at Jacob, but Natalia's voice cut him. "Just take the money and leave," Natalia hissed.

Mason retrieved his money from the ground. Arguing with Jacob or Natalia was useless because the crowd had already painted him to be a liar. Mason placed the envelope in his pocket and retreated from the crowd. He wasn't planning on staying for the class anyway.

"Did you see that? He is a hypocrite!" one student spat back at Mason.

"Jacob is being generous to him, and he can not appreciate his kindness; what a hypocrite!" another spat, but Mason ignored them and exited the classroom.

He headed downtown to look for a day job since he could only work at the restaurant at night. He knew getting a decent day of joy in this part of the country without connection was like casting a hook without bait in the river, hoping to catch a fish.

Mason glanced at his watch. It was already 2:00 pm. He had been walking for hours and hadn't seen any jobs, and the ones he saw wouldn't even give him a chance or a listening ear.

He decided to cross the road and get a bottle of water as he was dehydrated from the terrible sun. The loud honk popped him out of his thoughts as he was crossing the road. Mason tilted his life to see the car speeding out of the next street, but it was too late, and Mason was spinning in the air with his life flashing before his eyes.

The screams of people nearby soared the air.

"Oh my God! That car just hit that man!" a passerby who saw the accident screamed.

Mason landed hard on the floor, bleeding from the impact. His vision was blurry, and his body was heavy. It was the aftermath of the accident, and his mind slowly drifted away.

'Is this the end for me,' Mason thought in his half-conscious mind, which was slowly fading away with each passing second. With that, Mason knew death was knocking at his door.

Mason lay on his back, eyes fixed on the cracked white ceiling above him. The faint hum of the air conditioner blended with distant laughter from the hallway. The room was a standard dorm with bunk beds welded to the floor, metal lockers, and a study desk bolted beneath a window that overlooked the restless sea. Above him, the university’s crest had been carefully carved into the plaster, bold and proud. It took a few seconds for the realization to settle in.He knew the university had private partnerships with quiet investments scattered beyond its official campus, but he hadn’t expected this.Song Island. He swallowed slowly.Who would have thought I’d own property on Song Island? The thought curled at the edge of his lips, forming a faint grin. Ownership meant leverage. "Leverage" meant control. And control meant survival.Across the room, he could feel King’s eyes on him, curious, calculating. Mason didn’t look his way. He didn’t need to. He was used to being watched. The door sud

At the front stood a stern-looking woman with a digital tablet in hand, her voice firm and unwavering as she read through the list of assigned roommates. Each name echoed through the lobby like a verdict.Mason stood somewhere in the middle of the crowd, his fingers wrapped around the strap of one of his duffel bags. His eyes wandered over the familiar faces, some excited, some anxious, others already forming silent alliances. This was temporary, only a few days in the dorms before they returned to civilization.“Samule, Jude, Peter, Alec, Hopkins, and Jadin." The sound of the woman's voice jolted him from his thoughts.Across the lobby, a sharp scoff cut through the air.Jacob and his associate stood at the far corner, dressed in polished confidence that bordered on arrogance. Jacob’s frown looked permanent, as if stitched into his expression.“They want me to share a room with this lowlife?!” he spat, loud enough for

  • Temporary Dormitory

The bus finally rolled to a halt at the edge of the island’s temporary dormitory compound, and the faint scent of salt from the nearby sea drifted in through the half-open windows. Above them, the moon hung, casting a silver veil across the landscape. Uncertainty lingered through the bus, and the students stirred from their reflections on the contrast between the moonlight and the warmer glow spilling from the compound ahead. The dormitory towered above them from the distant, almost modest and welcoming. The exterior was bathed in a mixture of pale yellow and the golden shimmer from lamps fixed along the wall perimeter. The doors of the bus hissed open, and one by one, the students exited, with their luggage in their hands. Few had their backpacks slung over their shoulders; others dragged rolling suitcases that rattled over the uneven ground. The fatigue of travel lingered in their movements, but curiosity brightened their eyes as they glanced around the unfamiliar compound.“So t

  • Regulations

The sound of an incoming vehicle attracted everyone's attention, and a brief silence passed through the crowd. The students narrowed their gaze to the two coastal buses, which stopped a short distance from them. The bold letters crested on one side of the buses made the division painfully clear.Murmurs instantly rippled through the crowd the moment the realization finally settled.“What? We are using separate buses?” one of the students spat.“That’s ridiculous.”“We just landed, for goodness’ sake," another voice lamented. Some couples stood frozen, with their fingers laced together as if refusing to let go might bend the rules. Others who had made perfect vacation plans exchanged bitter looks, with annoyance sharp in their eyes. Unlike the other student, whose face wore an expression far from satisfaction, Mason remained unfazed. He didn't know why the students were still surprised at the announcement. They have been in the university for years, enough to know the rules and regula

  • Arriving At Song Island

The airplane commenced its gradual descent, gliding smoothly through a dense curtain of clouds as Song Island gradually emerged beneath them. Its breathtaking terrain was laced with pure nature, prompting a wave of gasps spread through the cabin. Everyone quickly pressed their faces to the windows, their eyes wide with awe. Their gazes drifted across the waters, sparkling under the afternoon sun to the coastline, holding several tall palm trees. They all stood in a line like vigilant sentinels with its fronds swaying gently in the breeze as if welcoming the aircraft’s arrival. A few distance from the resort at the shore, modern buildings with minimalist designs rose faintly above the greenery, hinting at the island’s developed areas. For a moment, it felt almost surreal; such an unspoiled, stunning paradise seemed too perfect to be real. One student nearly lifted out of their seat, with his eyes glued to the window with an expression of wonder, as if the island might vanish if they b

  • Flight 2

Mason studied her for a moment, her calm face laced with hidden tension. Even when she tried to hide, he could clearly see through her. Without a word Mason leaned back in his own seat, allowing the silence to settle between them.A few minutes later, the flight attendant returned with his order.“Sir—” she paused, her eyes briefly flicking to Cleopatra, whose eyes now fluttered open. “Here is your request.”Cleopatra turned slowly toward Mason, and their eyes met.‘Is she jealous?’ Mason thought.Ignoring the momentary awkwardness, he asked softly, “Are you hungry?”Cleopatra nodded.Mason turned to the attendant. “Could I get another? My girlfriend will be having this.”He took the tray from the attendant and placed it gently in front of Cleopatra.“Oh,” the attendant said, her gaze lingering on Cleopatra for a second before returning to Mason. “Right away, sir.”Cleopatra lifted the wine glass, took a sip, and frowned; then her eyes lit up, but she quickly replaced her expression,
