SCROLL FRAGMENT THREE

The civil war came many years later as predicted by the late King Legolam the Just of Nialli. The North-eastern kingdoms of the continent, under the banner of Poles resisted against the rest of the United kingdoms.

The united army numbered 100,000 soldiers and were accompanied by a battalion of 300 Purger Knights. They fought their way through, conquering all the way from Slodoroon to Lytham before they were beaten back at the unshakable walls of Poles.

The United army laid siege to Poles for three months to no effect. The magical barrier around Poles was too strong that not even the Purgers could break it. And by the end of the third month, help came to the North-eastern army in the form of a battalion of demon princes and princesses. They tore through the ranks of even the senior Purgers, and decimated the already demoralized United army.

But the United army did not suffer any further casualties as they fled because of the sacrifice of an unnamed band of Purgers, numbering only fifty. These fifty Purgers stood against the horde of the demon princes and are rumored to had all fallen at the end.

The total number of survivors who returned from the war was 15,000 soldiers and 30 Purgers. After the unquestionable defeat of the United kingdoms, the other North-eastern kingdoms formed the Polian Empire, which was ruled by Emperor Jaron the third, King of Poles.

SCROLL FRAGMENT FOUR

“I’ve completed my research after hundreds of years and come to the conclusion that the sundering of our world is undoubtedly the fault of the deities of the Upper Aether. It is impossible to reach the true cusp of immortality, but this did not stop their desire for power.

I leave this letter to you, Wyvrill, before I head out to the front lines. Know that the gods are to blame for the current state of our world. We rely on their help now to beat back the Demon invasion, but this all began as a result of their greed and selfishness. My return is not certain, so I’m going to leave this information for you in written form instead, hoping that it’ll teach you should I fail to return.

The first lesson I’ll put to parchment is this: Magic is measured by affinity to aspects and elements as I’ve told you earlier. But what I failed to mention is that this affinity is not a gift given by the gods. It is rather, the understanding of the elements and aspects of our reality.

The more you train as I have taught you, you’ll begin to understand. You’re less than thirty summers old, but your affinity with the water element is already at 17%. This makes you a true prodigy, and this is why we’ve been raising you in the strictest way possible, so you can continue after us.

This is the universally accepted system of magic progression in our Sundered Aether:

Below the 40% mark is not worthy of mention, Wyvrill, so you must strive to exceed this level quickly. Those at the 40% mark are said to be in the Immanent Realm. This is the level at which the ordinary mages can be called Grand mages, and it is the starting point at which we and the Demons can call a practitioner by the title of Master. This is just a start, Wyvrill.

Beyond this is the 50% mark known as the Manifestation Realm. The Divine body you’ve seen us manifest only begins its manifestation at this stage, albeit only as an intangible shadow. But at this point, a practitioner is finally able to gain recognition from an element or aspect.

The 60% mark is the Emergent Realm and this is when the Divine body becomes tangible, albeit still translucent in appearance. Next is the 70% mark, or the Solidified Realm. This is my current level, Wyvrill. As you’ve noticed, my Divine body is no longer translucent, but opaque, and I command complete authority over the fire element. Only those at the 80% and 90% mark can contest control of fire from me.

Now, pay rapt attention to this, Wyvrill. Those at the 80% mark are said to be in the Sovereign or Dominion Realm, and there is a significant reason for this. It is said that at this level, a practitioner is a deity of their element or aspect, having even the ability to decide the laws of the world as concerns their element or aspect. Our enemies, the Demon Lords are all at this level, Wyvrill, so there is no rest for you until you reach this benchmark also. This will take hundreds of years, so prepare yourself.

Beyond this is the 90% mark, and this is the Transcendent Realm. Never anger a being at this level. The supreme deities of the Upper Aether are all at this level, even the Prince. These beings are already the closest a being can ever come to immortality, commanding the very idea of the elements and aspects. Their control and order is so absolute that they can change even the nature of their aspects and elements.

Hitting the 90% mark is already the threshold. None have even made it to 91%. Some might claim that there is a possibility of attaining even 99% affinity, but this must not be attempted, as it is purely theoretical and dangerous. Records of this level, revered highly in the other continents of the Middle Aether as the Cusp of the Primordial Realm, all speak of its impossibility and consequences. To go beyond the 90% threshold is to cease to be.”

  • CHAPTER EIGHT: Dream

Gilgal returned an hour later, having buried the corpses and set up wards around their temporary camp. There was no water to wash his clothes, so he’d stripped them off, wrapping himself up in a black cloak. Vera had frowned at that. All Knights had a spare, Nur had told her that. And besides, she was sure she’d caught a glimpse of another set folded neatly in Gilgal’s saddlebag. But she soon stopped caring about his state of undress when the first clap of thunder sounded outside. It was so loud and sudden that she couldn’t stifle the yelp that escaped her lips. Gilgal was completely calm, though. He sat cross-legged like a statue except for the steady rhythm of his heartbeat and breath. He’d removed his medallion and gauntlets before stepping into the carriage, and the atmosphere around him steadily grew charged and oppressive. She had no explanation for it except that he was trying to comprehend the nature of lightning using the storm. It was such an outdated concept for young

  • CHAPTER SEVEN: Meeting the Competition

Vera watched the Purger Knight, Gilgamesh, who’d claimed a spot in Nur Haley’s heart for the better part of a century, and she couldn’t help but feel jealous. Before the romantic relationship between him and Nur, they’d already shared a student-teacher relationship that she herself could never have. Even broken up, the man before her still knew more about Nur Haley than she ever could. But it wasn’t the jealousy that she focused on now, nor the appearance of the man that her father often spoke about in exaltation. It was rather his reaction to her words. She’d only seen him twice before. Once, in the portrait hall back in the Castle, and again in her dreams where he had the golden eyes and spoke words that shook the earth. His reaction to the mention of the golden eyes had been peculiar, to say the least. Then he’d trembled with the next words that came out of her mouth, like it was a taboo he didn’t want to hear. At any other time, she’d discount his reaction as simply bein

  • CHAPTER SIX: Road to Castle Org

Nearly two days after Gilgal finally left the kingdom of Laos, he paid for passage on the ferry; paying extra for Harvey. After the crossing, he continued on his way through the forests around the kingdom of Nialli for five days before he finally made it unto the dirt and winding roads cutting through the mountain ranges around the Castle. He was only slightly alert, nearly falling asleep on Harvey as the proximity of the Castle lulled him into a sense of security, then he heard the hushed voices before him. Harvey stopped to a mental command, and he dismounted silently. The voices became more discernible as he crept closer to the bend in the road, until he got a view of the action.A band of large men dressed as guards were slowly boxing a woman into a corner. Along the road were horses and a carriage tipped over on its side, with the wheels broken. Chests were already dotting the ground around the carriage, along with pieces of fabric spilling free from opened chests.

  • CHAPTER FIVE: Yvaine Regina Immortalis

Yvaine Regina Immortalis watched the young man curiously. There was certainly Demon blood in his body, but no trace of Human, nor any of the other lesser inhabitants of the Middle Aether. The other part of his blood was pure, but she’d never come across it before. It was so strong, nearly overshadowing his Demon blood even.Very curious. He looked nothing like his mother, except in the eyes, sporting the same green pupils and heavy eyebrows. But he was beautiful, though. His age wasn’t shown on his body, though she was sure he couldn’t be more than 350 years old. His physical constitution was as perfect as one would expect of a Daemon, and even his magic level was decent, but he was weak. She looked at him again, unconsciously cocking her head as she pondered. Meeting him here was a surprise, and the questions she couldn’t answer about his parentage interested her. Unfortunately, she couldn’t stay to examine him to her heart’s content because they’d be picking up her trail soon.G

  • CHAPTER FOUR: A Meeting

Gilgal walked away from the burning pile, keeping his distance from the tongues of flame and smoke rising from it. He didn’t bother this time with a kerchief, and neither did anybody else. He suspected their reasons must be similar to his; giving honor to the dead by not rejecting even the last embers of their sacrificed lives. He turned to see Jedaz and the mayor still standing vigil over the burning bodies and wondered if Wharfdale will ever return to her former glory. He knew of course that the mayor had already sent a report of the events to the King, but he also knew that King Rovenard the second of Laos was never one to support what he considered lost causes. And Wharfdale could be described as nothing else now.The guardsmen were all dead, so she was left defenseless. The fishermen were all devoured by the Demon Austinphas, and what remained of them wouldn’t be hauling any nets for the better part of a year. With the war looming, Wharfdale had no chance of making a return, espe
