“Good night, Mr Cross.”

Julian Cross distractedly typed goodnight in response to his students before he shut the old laptop.

Worry was etched on his handsome face as he stood up from the sofa and started pacing. He raked his hand through his dark brown hair as he dialled a number.

The phone rang. And rang.

No response. Just like earlier.

“Come on, Susan. Just pick up,” he said worriedly as he looked at the time.

01:09 a.m.

“Where on earth are you at this time?” he muttered in frustration as he tried again.

Same result.

Another thought came to his mind, but his finger hovered above the buttons of the small, cracked phone in his hand.

Susan's parents, who were currently on vacation, would definitely scold him if he called them without being told to.

Still, his gaze went to the clock again and he decided to risk it.

“Maybe she called them,” he wondered as he dialled the number.

Two rings. Then the call was picked.

“Hello, mum. I…”

“Who the hell is your mum, eh?” A disgusted voice yelled at him from the other end.

“How many times have I told you to stop calling me that?! How embarrassing would it be if people think I am related to a loser like you?!” Madea Gibson scolded on the phone.

Julian's hand tightened against the phone as anger surged within him. He could hear Carlos's voice in the background too. “Why is that fool calling?”

Julian focused on the most important thing, and calmly said, “I am sorry, Mrs Gibson. I just wanted to know if Susan has called you. She is not home yet, and she is not picking my calls, so I thought…”

“You are monitoring my daughter now? Who the hell do you think you are? If you have too much time on your hands, why not use it to…”

Julian's head jerked towards the door as he heard a sound.

Joy leapt in his heart as a beautiful brunette with a curvaceous body, dressed in a slinky black dress, entered.

“She is home, ma.”

“Of course, she is home. Where else would…”

Julian disconnected the call knowing he would catch hell for it later. But for now, he didn't care.

His love was home.

“Susan, where have you been? I have been calling you nonstop,” he said as he moved closer to where she leaned against the door.

She opened her eyes and the grey eyes froze him with something close to hatred as she moved from the door.

“Quit your yapping, will you? You are giving me a headache,” Susan Gibson said as she tossed her drawstring purse at her husband.

Julian caught the bag before it smacked him in the crotch, even as his nose twitched with the smell that followed Susan into the opulent sitting room.

“You have been drinking? You know you are not supposed to drink. Your stomach…”

“Shut the fuck up, Julian!” Her slap followed her words so fast that Julian couldn't dodge it.

As he held his face in shock, she pushed his shoulder away while trying to pass him. Instead, she was the one who almost fell as she stumbled.

Julian quickly grabbed her before she cracked her head open on the tile. Instead of gratitude, as soon as she stood firm, she immediately pushed him away with a sneer.

“How dare you lay your filthy hands on me! How shameless of you to try to take advantage of me while…!”

The chandelier glinted at something on her neck. Blood drained from Julian's head as a rushing sound filled his ears, drowning out Susan's scolding.

“What is this, Susan?!”

Before he could stop himself, he had grabbed her face and turned her head aside for a closer look.

She batted at his hands. “Hey, what is wrong with you?! Take your hands off me now or…!”

“Is that hickeys?!” Julian voiced his disbelief, even though the evidence was right there on her milky white skin.

That could only mean one thing. She wouldn't do that, right?

Susan stilled for a second before she pushed him hard. She got angrier when he did not budge, and raised her hand to slap him again.

This time, he caught her hand mid-air. Despite the turmoil roaring in him, he looked straight at her widened eyes and asked in a deceptively soft voice, “I asked you a question, Susan. Are you cheating on me?”

“Wha… what are you talking about?” She seemed flustered for a moment. Then, confidence shone in her eyes again as she drilled her coral-painted nail into his hard chest.

“What gave you the right to ask me such a question? You seem to forget your place again, Julian. Have you forgotten who is bankrolling everything in this house? You are nothing but a worthless househusband. How is it any of your business what I do with my body? You think you are man enough to ask me that?”

The pain that lanced through Julian at her cruel words made his hand slacken on hers. She used that opportunity to jerk her hand away, then rubbed where his hand had touched her like there was dirt there.

“You are useless to me, Julian. If not for my promise to grandpa, you think I would still keep you around?” Her eyes slitted into daggers as she continued, “Don't tell me you are thinking I would give in soon and let you touch me when that has never happened in the past five years.”

She scoffed at the hurt expression on Julian's face. “You really are stupid if you…”

The shrill ring of her phone cut her off and she groaned at the noise.

The phone was still in the purse in Julian's hand and she snapped at him, “Give me the damn phone or are you trying to kill me with a headache?”

Chalking up her increased aggression to her drunkenness, Julian passed her phone to her. He watched her struggle to pick the phone while shielding her eyes from the bright light.

Out of habit, he almost reached out to help her when she finally managed it.

“Hey, girl! What have you been up to?!” A voice Julian recognised said excitedly through the phone.

He saw Susan wince even as she responded, “Hey Cecile, what's up?”

“I should be asking you,” Cecile said as Susan kicked off her shoes in Julian's direction, one of them hitting his shin. “Girl, you’ve been having all the fun.”

“What fun are you talking about?” Susan asked as she sagged into the vinyl couch.

“Are you asking me that? Girl, don't even pretend with me. Anyways, just check the trending news on Socials. I will call you back for the full gist. You have to tell me everything. I bet that useless husband of yours will cry himself to sleep tonight!”

With a nasty laugh, Cecile disconnected the call.

Susan squinted at the phone. Then she jerked it towards Julian.

“Here. Check what she's talking about. My eyes hurt.”

He was tempted to ignore her. Still, something told him he would want to see this. After all, Cecile just mentioned him.

He collected the phone from her and clicked the search bar. He was about to type in trending news when the most searched name caught his eyes.

Gibson.

He clicked on it and a video with over four million views popped up. He tapped on it, and his world shattered.

Deep-throated grunts and blood-sizzling moans filled the room. Even Susan, who had shielded her arm over her eyes, suddenly turned towards him.

“Fuck, you are so sweet,” a man grunted.

Susan jerked off the couch, with her hand stretched towards Julian. “Give…!”

The woman in the video turned her head in ecstasy, glossy brown hair falling aside to show a face that made Julian's hand go limp.

“You are so tight, Susan,” came the grunt again as the man slammed into her over and over again.

  • The Betrothal

Julian went past his bedroom to the massive chrome and black dressing room filled with luxury clothes, footwear, and accessories. They all held no interest for him as he went to a shelf at the end of the room.Atop it was the picture of a beautiful brunette and a golden-haired man. The love between the two pulsed through time as they smiled at each other like their world began and ended with one another. Julian’s hand tightened slightly on the frame before he set the picture aside. His finger traced the smooth wood. Then a quick finger scan made a clicking sound. Julian stepped back as the upper part of the shelf retracted and flipped upside down.An eerie glow bathed the room, and the light from the shelf focused on the opposite wall. Almost immediately, a beeping fingerprint scanner appeared on the wall.Julian placed his fingers on it, and the smooth wall immediately parted, opening inward. Lights came on in what looked like a high-tech office as Julian stepped inside. The w

  • Urgent Call

Julian sat straight as the limo that picked them up at the helipad wound its way through the artistically designed driveway that led to the house. While the Gibsons' mansion was part of an estate, the Cross's home sat regally on a seven-acre estate, with every sort of amenity like a golf course, orchards and a greenhouse. The flower-edged drive soon opened up to a magnificent sprawl of a mansion that was more than five times the size of the Gibsons’ home.A bittersweet feeling swept through Julian as he remembered the time he had finally come here to live. After his parents' death. Just like back then, his grandpa was standing outside on the vast porch. Julian got out as soon as the limo opened. The old man leaning on a golden cane looked formidable despite his advanced age and white tuft of hair. His checkered shirt, cargo trousers and chunky silver wristwatch only added to his commanding presence. Eyes that mirrored Julian's fixed on him as if he could not believe his eyes.

  • The Command

The so-called nobody made a call as soon as he left the estate, which had been his hole for five years. “I am ready,” he said into the phone. “Oh, what wonderful news, Mr. Cross. I am on my way.” Julian disconnected the call and raised his face to the cool air. Despite how tempting it was, he refused to look back at the past. He had only walked a few paces when four black Aston Martins and a limo parked beside him. Men in black suits jumped down from the four cars and bowed to him. A distinguished older man in a white suit got down from the car and walked briskly to him. “Welcome back, Young Master.” “Thank you, Henry,” Julian said. He entered the limo the older man gestured at.Henry Petrovich was the most dignified man in Jetrovale. He was only second to his master, Harold Cross, Julian's grandfather. Despite Henry's influence in Jetrovale, he was still acting as a companion and assistant to Harold in Quiset. Harold had singlehandedly raised Henry from the slums of Quise

  • He Wouldn't Dare

Cecile burst into laughter beside her. Susan looked at her friend's face in question before Cecile tried to stop her laugh. “I am sorry. It’s just…” she turned to Julian with a mocking look. “I have always known you are such a big baby, and an attention-seeker. But this? I will admit I didn’t expect you to sink this low.”“What is she talking about?” Julian wondered, his gaze intent on her. Slightly surprised by his cold look, Cecile continued anyway, “Just because Susan is finally getting the kind of man you will never be, you are throwing tantrums? What, you bought a fake stamp to make it look real just to get her attention. What a loser!”Susan frowned as she looked at the court stamp already on the document close to where Julian had already signed. Of course, it was fake. She had never heard of any divorce agreement getting stamped before signing. She couldn’t believe Julian would be so shameless that he would even commit the crime of impersonating a judge.Earlier, she had e

  • Divorce Papers?

Julian looked down to see the thirteenth missed call from Susan. Such a sight would have lightened his heart twenty-five hours ago.In their five years of marriage, he could count how many times she had called him on one hand. Those less than five times had always been to scold him about something.“Well, not anymore,” Julian vowed. He threw the last feed in his hands into the duck pond and smiled as the ducks rushed to get their shares. He was going to miss some things about this place after all.The park had always been his place of solace, where he came to clear his head when the mansion got too intolerable for him. It was also where he had made some of the deals that were currently shaping the global markets.“Time to end this,” he muttered as he waved at the ducks.Greedy, his favourite duck, took a moment to look at him. It quacked and went back to chomping.Julian snorted a laugh, which lifted a bit of the gloom in his heart. He could have sworn the duck heard him. Then

  • The Engagement

By the time Isaac mentioned two more several-million-dollar drinks, and the family's embarrassment was increasing, he finally asked for a glass of water. Madea rushed off to get it, glaring at Julian as if he were the root of all their problems.“I apologise about that, Mr Anderson. Now that we know what you like to drink, we will make sure we have it when next you visit,” Carlos said brightly.“Oh, it is fine,” Anderson said with a benevolent smile. “The ones I mentioned are the least expensive of my kind of drinks, actually. I just thought every home would at least have that.”Carlos cleared his throat at the subtle insult. Julian almost laughed at the irony of it all. The man who had never spared him a kind word, despite his dedication all these years, was bending backwards for another man and even taking insults without a word?Money sure does make a lot of difference. If only these fools knew.Susan looked uncomfortable as she changed the topic. “Isaac, about the scandal…”“Yes
