Chapter 8
Author: Gu Lingfei
Zachary was mindful of his body image, so he was careful with his diet.

Serenity smiled. “You’re quite fit, Mr. York.

“So… I guess I’ll go back to bed?”

“Sure,” Zachary replied.

“Goodnight.”

Serenity wished him goodnight before turning on her heel to leave.

“Hang on, Se… Serenity.”

Zachary called after her.

Pausing, Serenity turned her head around and asked, “Yes?”

Zachary looked at her and said, “Please don’t walk around in your pajamas next time.”

She was not wearing a bra underneath her pajamas. Unfortunately, his eagle eyes picked up on that.

They were husband and wife anyway, but what if someone else caught her in her pajamas?

The last thing he wanted was for other men to see his wife’s body.

Red in the face, Serenity bolted back to her room and slammed the door shut.

Zachary was speechless.

She was embarrassed before he could feel awkward for her.

Zachary took a moment to sit before heading to the master bedroom. He bought the furnished house at the last minute. It was move-in ready.

Nevertheless, his bedroom had not been sorted out due to the rush.

He was quite impressed that Serenity knew how to take a hint instead of brazenly demanding to sleep in the same room.

Thank goodness fulfillment of marital obligations was not asked of him.

The wee hours of the morning went by uneventfully for the married couple.

On the next day, Serenity woke up at six o’clock in the morning as usual.

Prior to this, she would make breakfast and tidy up the place after she got up. If time permitted, she would help her sister hang the laundry out to dry.

Serenity had taken the role of a nanny in the years she stayed at Liberty’s place, mainly because she was trying to lighten the load off her sister. However, her brother-in-law took it for granted and ordered her around like a nanny.

She woke up today and stared at the unfamiliar bedroom that she spent the night in. As memories flooded back into her mind, Serenity thought to herself, ‘I must be half-asleep to think I’m still at Liberty’s place. This is my home. I don’t have to get up now.’

Serenity laid back down to return to dreamland.

It was a shame that she could not adjust her body clock though. Serenity could not sleep in even if she tried.

She might as well get up since her tummy was rumbling.

After a change of clothes and a wash-up, Serenity walked out of her room and took a glance at Zachary’s bedroom door. By the looks of the closed door, he must still be sleeping.

Well, it was hard to get up at this hour since he was home late last night.

Serenity wandered into the kitchen and stared at the empty room. A brief silence later, she turned around and made her way out.

She had placed an order for kitchenware yesterday, but the stuff had not arrived.

Had she known, Serenity would have bought them in a store rather than online.

While moving house yesterday, Serenity remembered seeing a breakfast place in the neighborhood.

Serenity decided to get breakfast takeouts.

She wondered what Zachary fancied eating.

It was not like she could wake him up and ask, so she bought a variety.

Serenity got breakfast omelet, bacon, sausages, pancakes, and toast—the favorites of ordinary people in Wiltspoon.

Zachary was an early riser despite staying up the night before. No sooner had Serenity gone out to get breakfast than he woke up.

Unaccustomed to having a wife, he once again forgot about Serenity’s existence and walked out bare-chested to get a glass of water. At that point in time, Serenity swung open the door to enter the house and their gazes met.

The next thing she knew, Zachary locked his arms against his chest and ran back to his room like Serenity did last night.

Dumbstruck at first, Serenity soon burst into laughter.

She thought to herself, ‘There’s nothing interesting about a man’s upper body. It’s nothing more than abs. I can’t believe he put his arms over his chest. Haha. That was so funny!’

A while later, Zachary reemerged fully dressed in a suit. He did not look too pleased, but who was he to tell Serenity off?

It was his fault for forgetting that a strange woman was in his living space now. The strange woman was also his wife on paper.

Normally, Zachary stayed in his villa and would wake up to an empty second floor. So long as he remained upstairs, the maids would not enter his space. At times he would ditch the shirt when feeling cheeky.

This was the case today, and the scheming girl saw his bare chest.

“Mr. York, I got breakfast. Come and have them.”

Despite laughing her *ss off, Serenity did not forget the agenda at hand. She placed the breakfast variety on the dining table and called the man, who felt violated, over.

Zachary stood in silence for a bit before heading over. He glanced at the breakfast and callously asked, “Don’t you know how to cook?”

“I do. I’m a good cook.”

“The store-bought breakfast, especially from the street stalls, is not very hygienic. You should cut down on that. You should make your own food since you can cook. It’s sanitary and safe.”

As the head of the York household, Zachary had never eaten breakfast favorites of Wiltspoonese.

Serenity replied with a question, “Have you seen your kitchen? It’s cleaner than your face. It has nothing in there. Even if I’m the chef of a five-star hotel, I can’t pull a feast without tools and ingredients.

Zachary was rendered speechless.

“Are you going to eat it?” Serenity asked.

Zachary was starving but tried to play it cool. He took a seat at the table and faintly said, “It’d be a waste not to eat since you already bought it. I guess having it once or twice won’t hurt.”

Way to save himself from embarrassment.

Serenity split half of each dish to him.

Taking a seat, she ate her share and remarked, “I looked around when I moved in yesterday. I ordered quite a bit of kitchen utensils online. I’ll get the groceries and cook when the things arrive, so you don’t have to eat street food.”

He held a high position in a major corporation. She guessed white collars were particular about their food.

Serenity had the habit of cooking at home and only ordered takeout when she was at the shop. She was willing to accommodate his fussiness for food.

“Our home is missing a lot of stuff. Can I decorate the place to my liking?”

Zachary picked his head up to glance at his wife sitting opposite him before digging into his breakfast. The common breakfast tasted alright.

“We’re husband and wife with a marriage license. This is your home. You can decorate it as you like on the condition that you don’t touch my room.”

She was free to turn the other rooms upside down.

“Okay.”

Having obtained his permission, Serenity made up her mind to go as planned.

With flowers and a swing on the balcony, she could read a book and admire the flower while sitting in her swing during her spare time.

“That reminds me. Nana told me yesterday to come back with you on the weekend for dinner and to meet the family.”

Zachary faintly responded, “I’ll let you know. I need to check my schedule. If I can’t make the time, I’ll get Nana to bring my parents over. You guys can meet and have a meal.”

Serenity had no objections.

“Okay. Go change your clothes. I’ll pack your bag.”It was not Phillip’s first time packing Louis’s bag for him. While Louis was changing his clothes and washing up, Phillip entered his study and placed the books on the desk into a bag. He also ensured Louis had his student card before exiting the study with the bag on his back. Louis had also finished changing. “I’ll head downstairs first, Louis. I’ll bring your bag down too.”“Okay.”Phillip went downstairs but did not see Aunt Delphine. He thought she had gone out. After putting the bag down, he ran to the kitchen. He smelled a delicious aroma and wanted to see if breakfast was ready. “Something smells good, Austin. Is breakfast ready? I want to… Oh, you’re here, Aunt Delphine.”Phillip, who had barged into the kitchen, saw his aunt watching Austin from behind in silence. Delphine asked her nephew calmly, “Has Louis woken up?”“I woke him. He’s still washing up. Are you learning how to cook from Austin, Aunt Del

When Delphine went downstairs, Isabella still had not returned from her morning run. Austin was preparing breakfast for Isabella and the boys in the kitchen as usual. “Aunt Delphine. “Phillip was watching the TV when he saw his aunt walking down the stairs. He quickly stood up and greeted her.“Good morning,” he added. Delphine asked, “Why are you up so early, Phillip? Louis hasn’t even woken up.”“I woke up early because I went to bed early last night.”Phillip grabbed the remote control and turned off the TV. He told his aunt, “I’ll go wake Louis up, Aunt Delphine.“Austin is back to work today. I’ll wake Louis up so we can have bunnies together. I asked Austin to make us some bunny-shaped buns.”“Okay. Go wake him up.”Delphine did not stop Phillip from heading upstairs. Louis was actually a pretty fussy child because everyone kept spoiling him. It was difficult to get him out of bed in the morning. He liked sleeping in. If he said he wanted to sleep a little longer,

“Don’t you want Austin as your future son-in-law?”Looking at his wife’s speechless expression, Hadrian said, “If you can’t accept a son-in-law like Austin, our daughter would probably never get married.“However, you’ll get worried if she doesn’t get married and stays by our side.“We weren’t good parents. I feel sorry for making Isa take on such a tiring responsibility of managing the family business at a young age. We can’t keep her by our side forever. She has to find her happiness.“As parents, aren’t we glad as long as our children are happy? They don’t have to be millionaires. Well, our family is wealthy enough. Isa just has to assess the man’s character when choosing a partner.“We can still accept someone with a slightly lower social status or lesser wealth than us.“I think Austin is a great fit. Our families are well-matched too.”Delphine said, “Don’t you think Austin lives too far away? He’s from Wiltspoon. That’s thousands of miles away from Satbury. It takes a few

Hadrian quickly pieced it together. Seeing his wife’s silent confirmation, he turned the light back on and sat up, studying her face.He asked somewhat disbelievingly, “Isa likes Austin? She told you this? So the girl does like men. I’d begun to wonder if she was incapable of love.”Though surprised, he lacked his wife’s anxiety. If anything, he felt relieved. His daughter was normal after all.He had secretly worried she might never love anyone, or that her orientation might diverge from tradition. The reality was, that she had just never dated anyone despite being in her twenties because she was simply unimpressed by the lackluster suitors swarming her.Austin, however, was different.Hadrian had appreciated him from the start. Their first meeting convinced him the young man was no ordinary talent, which was later proven true when Austin’s elite background came to light.Despite being a scion of a hundred-billion-dollar empire and having considerable wealth of his own, he was

Isabella’s family would likely be tactful enough not to disturb them often, though her two little brothers, with their bottomless stomachs, would probably drop by frequently for meals.Delphine opened her mouth to speak, then hesitated.Truthfully, her daughter’s plan sounded remarkably well-considered.“Mom, don’t worry about Austin and I. I’ll handle everything properly. I won’t let myself be disadvantaged,” Isabella reassured her mother, but also impliedly telling her that she would make the decision herself. Her parents could offer advice, but the final choice was hers alone.“Mom, it’s late. You should rest. I need to head to sleep too. I have a meeting tomorrow.”Delphine rose. “Oh, you should head to bed then.”Tomorrow, she would speak with Austin privately. She needed to gauge his sincerity.Isabella saw her mother out. She only closed her door and went back into her room once her mother had left; her mind at ease now that the matter was settled. Did her daughter's words mean she intended to marry Austin? After a moment of inner conflict, Delphine said, “Isa, we can't bear to see you marry so far away. Austin is wonderful, but his home is too distant. You know better than anyone that our family still relies on you.”“Mom, I may marry Austin, but I won’t leave Satbury. I’ll continue managing the company affairs as before. I’ll even keep living at home. You don’t have to worry that I’ll neglect my responsibilities after getting married.”This made her mother’s eyes widen. “Isa, have you and Austin already discussed what you’ll do after you get married? Is he willing to become a live-in son-in-law for our family?”If Austin agreed to this, the match might actually be worth considering. The thought of their family gaining such an outstanding son-in-law shifted Delphine’s perspective. With Austin by her daughter’s side, he could share her burdens and become her pillar of support. Moreover, no one would dare scheme against th

After a brief silence, Isabella spoke, “Mom, even though I’ve never been in a relationship before, I know when a man treats a woman well, there’s always a purpose.“From the very beginning, Austin treated me as his fiancée, so his kindness was intentional from the start.”They just had not read into it.“As for the previous private chefs…”Isabella trailed off. The chefs she had hired before were nothing like Austin. They were older, married, and had families of their own. Naturally, they would not—and could not—entertain any inappropriate thoughts about the young lady.“Isa, Austin is exceptional. Our whole family adores him. That’s a fact. Even if you two hadn’t developed feelings for each other, we’d still like him.“These past two days while you were away on your business trip, uhh, at FC Manor, Austin didn’t cook. The boys noticed the difference, and even I found it hard to adjust. I have to say, in just a few months, he’s completely won over all our stomachs.”Delphine sig

Even in business, our companies are too far apart to have any dealings.“Their family has no investments or business here, so there’s nothing to worry about.“If she hadn’t been seeking a bride for her grandson, she wouldn’t have gone to such lengths to investigate someone like this.”Though she said this, Isabella felt immense relief that their family and the Yorks had no prior conflicts. At first glance, he did not seem like a chef at all.Even after watching him cook and tasting his dishes, confirming they were indeed his work, Isabella remained half-skeptical.At the time, she had not voiced her doubts, letting him pass the interview instead. She figured the truth would reveal itself once he started working. If he had somehow cheated his way through the interview, once officially employed as a private chef, he would have to handle everything himself and no one to rely on.Later, it
