Chapter 1
Wiltspoonâs hot weather in October was a killer. Still, the mornings and evenings were eased by the late autumn breeze.Serenity Hunt got up first thing in the morning to make breakfast for her sisterâs family of three. She then grabbed her birth certificate and slipped away in the silence.âWeâre going Dutch from now on, and Iâm talking about everythingâthe living expenses, the mortgage, and auto loans! Your sister should be splitting the cost since sheâs staying at our place. Sure, she pays two thousand bucks a month, but it doesnât stretch very far. Sheâs basically mooching off us.âSerenity overheard her brother-in-lawâs comment during the coupleâs argument last night. She had to move out of her sisterâs place. However, there was only one way to put her sisterâs mind to rest, and that was to get married.Since Serenity wanted to tie the knot on short notice without ever having had a boyfriend, she decided to take up on Grandma Mayâs offer. Serenity had saved the old lady by chance and came to know that Grandma May was trying to marry off her grandson, Zachary York, who had trouble settling down.Twenty minutes later, Serenity got off to her pit stop at City Hall.âSerenity.âA familiar voice summoned her attention the moment she got out of the car. It was Grandma May.âGrandma May.âAs Serenity hurried over, she took notice of a towering yet distant figure standing next to Grandma May. He must be Zachary, her husband-to-be.At a closer distance, Serenity was dumbstruck after getting a load of Zacharyâs face.According to Grandma May, her eldest grandson, Zachary had no luck with the ladies despite hitting thirty. Needless to say, Grandma May was worried sick.Serenity had always assumed that he must be hideous. After all, she heard that Zachary had a high-paying job up the corporate ladder in a major group. Now that they had met face-to-face, Serenity realized that she had gotten it all wrong.Zachary was attractive and carried himself with an air of aloofness. Standing next to Grandma May with a sour face, he appeared standoffish and gave off vibes to stay away from him.Serenityâs gaze strayed to a black MPV parked nearby. Judging by the logo, it was a national car rather than some multimillion-dollar vehicle. Serenity deduced that the economic difference between her and Zachary was not that far off.She and an old friend from school had started a bookshop at the entrance of Wiltspoon School.During her free time, Serenity would also knit little knick-knacks to sell online. The sales were not too bad.In a month, she could bring home a steady income of twenty thousand dollars. The same amount in Wiltspoon would position her among the white collars. That was why she could afford to hand her sister five thousand bucks for living expenses.Nevertheless, her brother-in-law had no clue about her earnings. Serenity told her sister to pocket three thousand bucks and only disclose the remaining two thousand to her husband.âSerenity, this is my oldest grandson, Zachary. Heâs a thirty-year-old man and canât even get himself out there. Although heâs not the warmest person, heâs attentive and considerate. You saved my life, and weâve known each other for three months. Trust me that I wonât recommend a bad man to you.âTaking in his nana's description of him, Zachary looked askance at Serenity, icily and profoundly without saying a word.Perhaps he had grown immune to her grumbles.Serenity knew that Grandma May had three sons, and each gave her three grandsons, blessing her with nine grandsons. Since a granddaughter was missing in Grandma Mayâs life, she sought that affinity with Serenity.Although blushing, Serenity openly extended her right hand to Zachary and introduced herself with a smile, âHello, Mr. York. Iâm Serenity Hunt.âZacharyâs penetrating gaze scanned Serenity from head to toe and back. With Nana clearing her throat, he reached out his right hand for a shake, albeit his voice reflected an icy tone. âZachary.âAfter the handshake, Zachary raised his left hand to look at the time before informing Serenity. âIâm a busy man. Letâs get it done and over with.âSerenity hummed in acknowledgment.Grandma May jumped in. âGo on inside to sort out the paperwork. Iâll wait for you here.ââNana, get into the car. Itâs a hot day out.âZachary said as he helped Nana into the car.Through his actions, Serenity was able to agree with Grandma Mayâs statement that Zachary might be callous, but his heart was in the right place.Although they were strangers, Grandma May mentioned that Serenity could move out of her sisterâs place into an apartment Zachary owned and paid for in full after the marriage. It could reassure her sister that Serenity was in good hands and end the arguments in the apartment because of her.It was only a marriage of convenience.Soon, Zachary returned to Serenityâs side and uttered, âLetâs go.ââSure.â Serenity quietly followed him into City Hall.At the registry office, Zachary urged Serenity. âMs. Hunt, you can still change your mind if you donât want to go through with this. It doesnât matter what my Nana says. Marriage is a huge commitment, not to be taken lightly.âHe was hoping Serenity had second thoughts because he had no intention of marrying a woman he had just met.

âWow, he really dotes on me. Iâll definitely take good care of him in the future. And besides, whether or not it was your idea, you brought it over, so Iâll consider it your love and care.âRiver did not care whether she personally prepared the soup. As long as she delivered it herself, even if it were just plain water, he would be happy.âHave you had any?â he asked.Rosalie replied, âI had breakfast before heading out, so of course Iâve had some. You go ahead and drink it. Let me know how it tastes.ââThen Iâll help myself.âRosalie hummed in agreement, urging him to drink it quickly.Watching River savor the soup with such relish, Rosalie could not help but tease him, âDo you not usually have soup? You make it seem like youâre drinking ambrosia or something.ââI do usually have soup, but since youâve brought this for me, it tastes especially good.âRosalie laughed. âI didnât make it myself, though.âGrandpa said you gave me a gift and I should return the kindness. I wasnât

The overtime pay was extremely generous. âWhatâs cooking in the kitchen? It smells great.âThe butler smiled. âOld Mr. Lafayette asked me to prepare some nourishing soup early in the morning. He said youâll be delivering it to Mr. York later.âRosalie was speechless.âIs there a lot of soup? I also want some. Damian and I also need some nourishment after how hard weâve been working these days.âThe butler laughed. âDonât worry. Thereâs definitely enough for you and Mr. Damian.âOnly then did Rosalie go for her morning run with a satisfied heart. An hour later, she got into her car begrudgingly with a vacuum-insulated flask in hand. She placed it on the passenger seat. Alrick had followed her out. He reminded her, âDonât spill the soup. Remember to deliver it to my grandson-in-law and only head to the office after you watch him finish it. Remember to wash the flask too.ââYouâve said this many times, Grandpa. I might even get blisters from hearing it too much. Youâre already

Alrick tapped Rosalieâs forehead. He said, âIt doesnât have to be a present. You can get the butler to cook something and bring it over to River.âShowing your care through small things in life is more useful than giving a present.âRosalie thought about it and said, âIâll try it out one day.âItâs late, Grandpa. Iâll help you return to your room to rest.âAlrick nodded. Rosalie supported him as they walked back to his room. She even said, âYou can just give me a call for a small matter like this in the future. You donât have to wait for me.ââThis isnât a small matter. It concerns your marriage and happiness.âIâll be at ease after you and Damian build your own families. Your cousins are easier to handle than you two. Some of them are even already dating, so I donât have to worry as much.âOnly you and Damian are stubborn and single till now. Thatâs why your younger cousins arenât in a rush to get married either.âOne of Alrickâs grandsons had already been dating his girlfri

âYou should rest in your room if youâre tired, Grandpa. Why did you fall asleep on the sofa?âAlrick Lafayette stirred after Rosalie pushed him. After blinking several times, he finally noticed it was Rosalie and sat up straight. He said, âYouâre back. What time is it?ââItâs past eleven. You should go back to your room to sleep if youâre tired instead of sleeping here. The AC is set to a low temperature, and you don't have a blanket.âRosalie turned off the TV using the remote control. âWhen are Mom and Dad coming back?âAlrick was half-retired and at home most of the time. She did not have to worry about him as there were staff looking after him during the day. After the staff clocked out, her parents could watch over him if they were at home.If they could not take good care of him, Rosalieâs uncles and aunts would be fighting to look after him instead.Alrick was a fortunate old man. His children and grandchildren were filial, and everyone was fighting to have him stay at t

River smiled. âWith me as your boyfriend, more people will be jealous of you. Iâll love you and treat you well forever, Rosalie.âThe York men were all similarly loyal and dedicated to their wives. Once they got married, they would spoil their wives endlessly. Of course, they also had high standards when choosing their wives. While it seemed like they did not care about family background, all the women they married came from prominent families and had good characters. It was not easy to marry into the York family. Although the elders were open-minded, they were still particular about who joined their family. Grandma May had assessed six of Riverâs sisters-in-law. Their character, capability, background, and connections had passed the test, and they were of equal social status to the York family.Rosalie smiled and said, âWe arenât that close yet, River. Letâs talk about this again in the future.âLetâs go. Iâm done with work. Didnât you want to buy me dinner? We can watch

Rosalie asked, âWhere will the gathering be held?ââWe all decided on La Grande Solville so that itâs more convenient for you to come over. It should be fine since you go there every night, right?âRosalie replied, âOkay. Iâll see you tomorrow night. Itâll be my treat. Since you all want to meet Mr. York, Iâll satisfy your wishes. Iâll reject all business engagements tomorrow night and bring him over.âHeâs more handsome and gentlemanly than in pictures. His charm is off the charts.âRiver was speechless. After Rosalieâs call ended, he asked, âDid your ex-classmate ask you to take me to your gathering?ââYeah. Many people are curious about us because of the scandal. Since theyâre interested, letâs satisfy their curiosity. Itâs not like youâre not good enough to be shown off. Iâll bring you along and let the girls see what a truly good man looks like.âRiver looked into Rosalieâs eyes. He asked, âWhat will you be introducing me as at the gathering?ââEnemy.âRiver said, âAn en
