Chapter 1
Wiltspoonâs hot weather in October was a killer. Still, the mornings and evenings were eased by the late autumn breeze.Serenity Hunt got up first thing in the morning to make breakfast for her sisterâs family of three. She then grabbed her birth certificate and slipped away in the silence.âWeâre going Dutch from now on, and Iâm talking about everythingâthe living expenses, the mortgage, and auto loans! Your sister should be splitting the cost since sheâs staying at our place. Sure, she pays two thousand bucks a month, but it doesnât stretch very far. Sheâs basically mooching off us.âSerenity overheard her brother-in-lawâs comment during the coupleâs argument last night. She had to move out of her sisterâs place. However, there was only one way to put her sisterâs mind to rest, and that was to get married.Since Serenity wanted to tie the knot on short notice without ever having had a boyfriend, she decided to take up on Grandma Mayâs offer. Serenity had saved the old lady by chance and came to know that Grandma May was trying to marry off her grandson, Zachary York, who had trouble settling down.Twenty minutes later, Serenity got off to her pit stop at City Hall.âSerenity.âA familiar voice summoned her attention the moment she got out of the car. It was Grandma May.âGrandma May.âAs Serenity hurried over, she took notice of a towering yet distant figure standing next to Grandma May. He must be Zachary, her husband-to-be.At a closer distance, Serenity was dumbstruck after getting a load of Zacharyâs face.According to Grandma May, her eldest grandson, Zachary had no luck with the ladies despite hitting thirty. Needless to say, Grandma May was worried sick.Serenity had always assumed that he must be hideous. After all, she heard that Zachary had a high-paying job up the corporate ladder in a major group. Now that they had met face-to-face, Serenity realized that she had gotten it all wrong.Zachary was attractive and carried himself with an air of aloofness. Standing next to Grandma May with a sour face, he appeared standoffish and gave off vibes to stay away from him.Serenityâs gaze strayed to a black MPV parked nearby. Judging by the logo, it was a national car rather than some multimillion-dollar vehicle. Serenity deduced that the economic difference between her and Zachary was not that far off.She and an old friend from school had started a bookshop at the entrance of Wiltspoon School.During her free time, Serenity would also knit little knick-knacks to sell online. The sales were not too bad.In a month, she could bring home a steady income of twenty thousand dollars. The same amount in Wiltspoon would position her among the white collars. That was why she could afford to hand her sister five thousand bucks for living expenses.Nevertheless, her brother-in-law had no clue about her earnings. Serenity told her sister to pocket three thousand bucks and only disclose the remaining two thousand to her husband.âSerenity, this is my oldest grandson, Zachary. Heâs a thirty-year-old man and canât even get himself out there. Although heâs not the warmest person, heâs attentive and considerate. You saved my life, and weâve known each other for three months. Trust me that I wonât recommend a bad man to you.âTaking in his nana's description of him, Zachary looked askance at Serenity, icily and profoundly without saying a word.Perhaps he had grown immune to her grumbles.Serenity knew that Grandma May had three sons, and each gave her three grandsons, blessing her with nine grandsons. Since a granddaughter was missing in Grandma Mayâs life, she sought that affinity with Serenity.Although blushing, Serenity openly extended her right hand to Zachary and introduced herself with a smile, âHello, Mr. York. Iâm Serenity Hunt.âZacharyâs penetrating gaze scanned Serenity from head to toe and back. With Nana clearing her throat, he reached out his right hand for a shake, albeit his voice reflected an icy tone. âZachary.âAfter the handshake, Zachary raised his left hand to look at the time before informing Serenity. âIâm a busy man. Letâs get it done and over with.âSerenity hummed in acknowledgment.Grandma May jumped in. âGo on inside to sort out the paperwork. Iâll wait for you here.ââNana, get into the car. Itâs a hot day out.âZachary said as he helped Nana into the car.Through his actions, Serenity was able to agree with Grandma Mayâs statement that Zachary might be callous, but his heart was in the right place.Although they were strangers, Grandma May mentioned that Serenity could move out of her sisterâs place into an apartment Zachary owned and paid for in full after the marriage. It could reassure her sister that Serenity was in good hands and end the arguments in the apartment because of her.It was only a marriage of convenience.Soon, Zachary returned to Serenityâs side and uttered, âLetâs go.ââSure.â Serenity quietly followed him into City Hall.At the registry office, Zachary urged Serenity. âMs. Hunt, you can still change your mind if you donât want to go through with this. It doesnât matter what my Nana says. Marriage is a huge commitment, not to be taken lightly.âHe was hoping Serenity had second thoughts because he had no intention of marrying a woman he had just met.

Having learned her lesson, Rosalie did not dare drink recklessly anymore. She was terrified of getting drunk and making another catastrophic mistake.Mandy tried to console her. âJust think of it as treating Mr. York to two meals a day, Ms. Lafayette. The blind dates are just a side task. Itâs not like heâs actually serious about them anyway.âWith Riverâs status, he did not need blind dates. If he were willing to give women a chance, there would be no shortage of accomplished ladies lining up to marry him.âEven without the blind dates, Iâd still have to treat him to meals. I owe him that much.âI donât know what kind of cursed luck Iâve been having lately. I keep losing to River. No, this weekend, Iâm going to visit my astrologer, ask if thereâs some way to stop him from screwing me over.âMandy burst out laughing. âI thought you didnât believe in all that, Ms. Lafayette? You always say, âFate is in your own hands. If you want something, you have to work for it.âââIf gods and

âA matchmaker can arrange the meeting, but canât guarantee a match every time.âIt was an honor just having the chance to meet Mr. York today. I never dared to expect heâd be interested in someone like me. I came in with no expectations, so this outcome isnât surprising at all.âRosalie glanced at her briefly before returning her focus to the road.âMadeline, youâre still young and just starting your career. Focus on your work first. Gain some achievements. Thatâll give you an advantage when it comes to dating or marriage later.âAt least you wonât be looked down upon by any potential in-laws.âMadeline agreed. âYouâre absolutely right. Iâll concentrate on my career for now. After a few years, once Iâve made some progress, then Iâll think about relationships and marriage. Thereâs no rush anyway.ââKeep it up. I believe youâll go far.ââThank you, Ms. Lafayette. I will.âWhen they arrived back at the office, Madeline got out of the car first. Instead of heading straight into the

River smiled. âAlright, letâs head back in. You should have a proper meal, and you especially need to eat more. You really have lost weight.âRosalie ignored him and strode back into the private room first.Seeing Madeline eating calmly, without any trace of awkwardness or sadness, Rosalie quietly sighed in relief.Even though she was the Lafayettesâ eldest daughter and the companyâs vice president, meaning Madeline would not dare hold anything against her, she still felt guilty. What kind of matchmaker sets up a blind date only for the guy to ignore the girl and dote on herself instead?Rosalie decided that once Madeline completed a year at the company, she would consider promoting her based on performance.âMadeline, this is La Grande Solvilleâs signature dish.âShe served Madeline a portion with a smile. âTry it.âMadeline thanked her warmly. âI already did, Ms. Lafayette. Itâs amazing. No wonder itâs their specialty. Every dish here is incredible.âWhile the two had been o

Rosalieâs expression darkened.âRiver! Can you be serious for once?âRiver said innocently, âI am being serious. Iâm not even smiling. Everything I said is true.âRosalie was momentarily speechless. After a pause, she tried again. âSo do you actually want to go on these blind dates or not? If not, I wonât waste time arranging tonightâs blind date, and Iâll cancel this whole monthâs blind dates.âYes, we signed an agreement, and I canât go back on it, but if youâre the one not cooperating, thatâs on you. It wouldnât be my fault even if I canceled the dates.âRiver replied, âBut I showed up, didnât I? You arranged a blind date with your employee, and I came. I even brought her flowers. How is that not cooperating?âRosalie gritted her teeth. âYou came, but you didnât engage. You didnât even serve her food.âWhy did you keep serving me? Do you have any idea how that looks? She probably thinks Iâm the one youâre interested in!âRiver said guilelessly, âBut I donât know Ms. Lejeune

This bastard.River had not changed at all.Even as Rosalie glared at him, he leaned halfway across the table, stretching out a hand to lightly tap her forehead.âRosalie, you look too serious when you glare. I prefer you smiling.â His tone was infuriatingly fond.Rosalie smacked his hand away and stood abruptly, her expression icy.âRiver. Come outside with me now. I have something to say to you.âRiver replied with an innocent smile, âCanât we talk here?âShe ignored him, turning on her heel and striding out.River had no choice but to follow.Madeline had not even gotten the chance to exchange more than two sentences with him the entire time.He had not looked at her once.Watching their retreating figures, she let out a quiet, bitter laugh. Why would the vice president play matchmaker for Mr. York and try to set her up with him?It was painfully obvious that he was into the vice president. Her presence here was just an excuse for a free meal.He had zero interest in h

âRosalie, did you say something? I couldnât quite hear you. Maybe you should sit next to me.âRiver grinned, pulling out the chair beside him in invitation.âIt would make it easier to serve you, too.âRosalie shot him another glare. He just kept smiling.Of course, there was no way she was moving. She was the matchmaker. What kind of image would it give if she sat next to him, letting him dote on her?Instead, she turned to Madeline with a bright smile.âHelp yourself, and donât forget to serve River, too. Heâs not picky and he eats anything.âPlus, his cooking is amazing. Those lucky enough to taste it still rave about it.âRosalie had only heard about this, of course.Given their rivalry, she never had the privilege of sampling Riverâs culinary skills.People claimed his cooking surpassed five-star chefs.Rosalie thought those people were just kissing Riverâs ass and refused to believe it, not without proof.Still, as the matchmaker, she had to sell his virtues.âMadel
