The hallway outside my bedroom was silent.

Too silent.

I stood with my back against the closed door, staring at the envelope in my hands.

My heart had not slowed down since I found it.

The photograph was still inside.

My father.

Daniel’s father.

Standing together outside a building I had never seen before.

And beneath the photograph, written in black ink, were six words that refused to leave my mind.

YOUR FATHER KNEW EVERYTHING.

I turned the photograph over again.

The date was written on the back.

The same date my father’s company had collapsed.

The same day our lives had changed forever.

For years, I had believed the story was simple.

The Carter family had destroyed us.

My father’s company had been doing well. We had a beautiful home. My parents had money, influence, and a future they had worked hard to build.

Then everything disappeared.

Accounts were frozen.

Business partners walked away.

Investors demanded their money.

Banks came after us.

And somehow, the Carter family had emerged stronger than ever.

My father had always refused to tell me exactly what happened.

Whenever I asked, he changed the subject.

Whenever I mentioned the Carters, his expression changed.

Fear.

Anger.

Regret.

I had mistaken those emotions for proof that the Carters were guilty.

Now I wasn’t so sure.

A knock sounded on my door.

I quickly slipped the photograph back into the envelope.

“Who is it?”

“It’s me.”

Daniel.

I hesitated before opening the door.

He stood outside wearing a dark shirt with the sleeves rolled up. His expression was calm, but there was something different in his eyes tonight.

Concern.

Or perhaps guilt.

“Can I come in?” he asked.

I stepped aside.

Daniel entered and closed the door behind him.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

His eyes moved around the room before settling on me.

“You look upset.”

“I’m fine.”

He gave me a faint, humorless smile.

“You’ve said that every time something is wrong.”

“And you’ve avoided answering every time I’ve asked you a question.”

His expression hardened.

“Fair enough.”

I folded my arms.

“You told me my family’s story wasn’t complete.”

“It isn’t.”

“You told me my father wasn’t innocent.”

Daniel looked away.

“I said there were things about your father that you don’t know.”

“What’s the difference?”

“A very important one.”

I stepped closer.

“Then tell me.”

He remained silent.

“Daniel.”

“I can’t.”

My anger rose immediately.

“Of course you can’t.”

He looked at me.

“You think I enjoy keeping things from you?”

“I don’t know what you enjoy. I barely know you.”

His jaw tightened.

“You married me.”

“I married you because I needed something from your family.”

The words came out colder than I intended.

Daniel didn’t react.

Perhaps he had expected them.

“I know,” he said quietly.

That answer surprised me.

“You knew?”

“I knew you didn’t marry me because you loved me.”

I stared at him.

“I never said—”

“You didn’t have to.”

He took a breath.

“From the beginning, I knew you had another reason for accepting this marriage.”

My fingers tightened around the envelope behind my back.

“Then why did you agree?”

Daniel looked directly into my eyes.

“Because I had my own reason.”

“What reason?”

He didn’t answer.

I laughed bitterly.

“That’s convenient.”

“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.”

“Try me.”

Daniel moved toward the window.

“The night your father’s company collapsed wasn’t an accident.”

My anger disappeared.

“What?”

He turned around.

“There were people working against your father from inside his own company.”

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Who?”

“We don’t know.”

“You don’t know?”

“Not completely.”

“But you know something.”

“Yes.”

“Then tell me.”

Daniel’s voice became quieter.

“Someone manipulated financial records. Someone redirected money. Someone created evidence that made your father appear responsible for losses he didn’t cause.”

I felt my stomach twist.

“Why would someone do that?”

“To destroy him.”

“And the Carter family?”

He hesitated.

“Your father believed my family was responsible.”

“Was he wrong?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

That silence said more than words could.

“Daniel.”

He looked at me.

“I don’t know who started the war between our families.”

“But you know the Carters were involved.”

“My family was involved.”

The distinction stopped me.

He continued.

“But involvement doesn’t mean responsibility for everything.”

I thought about the photograph hidden behind me.

My father standing beside William Carter.

If they had known each other, why had my father never told me?

“Did my father know your father?”

Daniel’s face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

“Yes.”

My heart pounded.

“How well?”

“Well enough.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“It’s the only one I can give you right now.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re asking questions that can put you in danger.”

I stared at him.

“I’ve been in danger since the day my family lost everything.”

Daniel walked closer.

“Not like this.”

Before I could respond, another voice came from the hallway.

“He’s right.”

The door opened.

Richard stood there.

His expression was unreadable.

Daniel turned sharply.

“Richard.”

Richard looked at me.

“Did he tell you about your father?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

Richard ignored him.

He stepped into the room.

“You have no idea what you’re dealing with, Sofia.”

I felt anger rise again.

“Then perhaps one of you should finally explain it.”

Richard smiled faintly.

“That’s exactly what Daniel doesn’t want.”

“Richard.”

Daniel’s warning was sharp.

But Richard continued.

“You want revenge, don’t you?”

I froze.

Daniel looked at him.

“Stop.”

Richard looked back at me.

“You came into this family with a plan.”

I didn’t deny it.

“I wanted answers.”

“No,” Richard said. “You wanted revenge.”

Silence filled the room.

Then I said, “And what if I did?”

Richard’s expression became serious.

“Then you should be careful who you blame.”

He turned toward Daniel.

“Tell her.”

Daniel said nothing.

Richard shook his head.

“You always do this.”

“Do what?”

“Protect everyone with silence.”

Daniel stepped toward him.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“I know more than you think.”

Richard’s eyes returned to me.

“Ask your husband why he knew your family was in trouble months before your father’s company collapsed.”

I stared at Daniel.

“Is that true?”

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

“Yes.”

My chest tightened.

“You knew?”

“I knew something was wrong.”

“How long?”

“Months.”

“And you never told me?”

“You weren’t part of my life then.”

“You could have told me after we met.”

Daniel looked at me.

“Would you have believed me?”

I didn’t answer.

Because I knew the truth.

Probably not.

Richard gave a quiet laugh.

“See? That’s the problem. She doesn’t trust you.”

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“This isn’t your conversation.”

Richard moved toward the door.

Before leaving, he stopped.

“Sofia.”

I looked at him.

“If you really want the truth about your family, stop asking who destroyed them.”

He paused.

“Start asking who benefited.”

Then he walked away.

The door closed.

I remained still.

Daniel was watching me.

“What did he mean?”

“I don’t know.”

“Don’t lie to me.”

“I’m not.”

I studied his face.

“You knew my family was in trouble before anyone else.”

“I was investigating it.”

“Why?”

“Because someone was trying to make the Carter family look responsible.”

“And you thought my father was involved?”

“I didn’t know what to think.”

“Then why marry me?”

Daniel’s expression changed.

For the first time, he looked genuinely tired.

“Because I was given a choice.”

“What choice?”

“I could walk away from the marriage and allow my family to handle the situation their own way, or I could marry you and keep you close enough to protect you.”

I stared at him.

“Protect me from whom?”

“I don’t know.”

“That’s impossible.”

“I wish it were.”

He came closer.

“I knew there was someone moving behind the scenes. I didn’t know who. I still don’t.”

“And your mother?”

“What about her?”

“Did she know?”

Daniel looked away.

That was enough of an answer.

“You really are hiding something.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because the moment you know everything, you become part of the danger.”

I shook my head.

“I am already part of it.”

“Not yet.”

I almost laughed.

“I’m your wife.”

“Exactly.”

His voice was barely above a whisper.

“That is what makes you vulnerable.”

Neither of us spoke.

For a strange moment, the anger between us disappeared.

I saw something in his face that I hadn’t expected.

Fear.

Not for himself.

For me.

Then he stepped back.

“You should sleep.”

“I don’t think I can.”

“Try.”

He reached for the door.

“Daniel.”

He stopped.

I almost asked him about the photograph.

But something inside me stopped me.

I wanted to know what he would do if he saw it.

So instead, I asked, “Did my father ever meet your father privately?”

Daniel stared at me.

“Why?”

“Just answer me.”

A long silence followed.

“Yes.”

Then he walked out.

I waited until his footsteps disappeared down the hallway.

Only then did I pull the envelope from behind my back.

I looked at the photograph again.

My father.

William Carter.

The date.

The words.

Something was wrong.

If my father and William Carter had been together that day, then the story I had believed for years was missing a piece.

A very large piece.

I placed the photograph on the table and stared at it.

Then I noticed something I hadn’t seen before.

Behind my father and William Carter was a building.

Above the entrance was a symbol.

A silver circle surrounded by three black lines.

I had seen that symbol before.

But where?

I searched my memory.

Nothing.

I picked up my phone and took a picture of it.

Then I heard a sound.

A soft movement outside my bedroom.

I froze.

Someone was standing in the hallway.

I slowly moved toward the door.

The footsteps stopped.

“Hello?”

No answer.

I opened the door.

The hallway was empty.

I stepped outside.

Nothing.

Then the lights went out.

My breath caught.

The entire floor disappeared into darkness.

I reached for my phone.

Before I could turn on the flashlight, I heard the sound again.

This time, it came from directly behind me.

A floorboard creaked.

I turned.

Nothing.

Then my bedroom door moved.

Slowly.

Someone was pushing it open from the other side.

My heart slammed against my chest.

I took one step backward.

The door opened wider.

“Who’s there?”

Silence.

I reached for the light switch.

Nothing happened.

Then a voice whispered from inside my room.

“Sofia.”

I froze.

I knew that voice.

It wasn’t Daniel.

It wasn’t Richard.

And it wasn’t anyone I had spoken to tonight.

The voice whispered again.

“You shouldn’t have married a Carter.”

The door suddenly slammed shut.

I stumbled backward.

My phone slipped from my hand and hit the floor.

The screen lit up.

One new message.

YOU ARE LOOKING IN THE WRONG PLACE.

A second message appeared immediately.

ASK YOUR MOTHER WHAT HAPPENED THAT NIGHT.

I stared at the screen.

My mother.

For years, she had told me she knew nothing about the Carter family.

For years, I had believed her.

But now someone was telling me otherwise.

I slowly picked up the photograph.

My hands were shaking.

The truth I had spent years chasing suddenly felt different.

Maybe the question had never been who destroyed my family?

Maybe the real question was—

What had my family done before everything fell apart?

And if my mother knew the answer...

Why had she kept it from me?

I looked toward the dark hallway.

For the first time since marrying Daniel Carter, I wasn’t afraid of the Carter family.

I was afraid of my own.
