The hallway disappeared into darkness.

For one terrifying second, nobody moved.

Then Sofia heard footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Coming from the west wing.

She instinctively reached for Daniel, but her fingers caught only the sleeve of his jacket.

“Stay behind me,” he whispered.

“I can’t see anything.”

“I know.”

A security light flickered somewhere ahead, throwing a faint glow across the corridor.

Daniel stepped forward.

Richard remained several feet away, watching the darkness.

“Who is she?” Sofia whispered.

Richard didn't answer.

Daniel looked at him.

“Richard.”

His brother finally spoke.

“Someone who should have been gone years ago.”

Sofia's stomach tightened.

“Gone?”

Richard's eyes moved toward her.

“Dead.”

The word hung in the darkness.

Sofia stared at him.

“What?”

Before Richard could explain, a figure appeared at the far end of the corridor.

A woman.

She stood beneath the dim emergency light, wearing a long dark coat. Her face was partly hidden by her hair, but Sofia could see that she was watching her.

Not Daniel.

Her.

The woman took one step forward.

“Sofia Hayes.”

Sofia's heart hammered.

“Who are you?”

The woman didn't answer.

Daniel moved between them.

“Leave.”

The woman laughed softly.

“You still protect her.”

Richard's expression hardened.

“You shouldn't be here.”

“I could say the same about you.”

The woman looked past them toward Sofia.

“You really don't know, do you?”

Sofia swallowed.

“Know what?”

Daniel turned sharply.

“Don't listen to her.”

The woman smiled.

“That is exactly what he wants.”

Sofia looked at Daniel.

“What is she talking about?”

Daniel didn't answer.

The woman reached into her coat.

Daniel immediately raised his hand.

“Don't.”

She stopped.

Slowly, she pulled out a small envelope.

Nothing else.

She placed it on a nearby table.

Then she stepped backward.

“Read it before you trust your husband.”

Sofia stared at the envelope.

“What is inside?”

“Something your father tried to hide.”

Her voice softened.

“Something the Carters killed to protect.”

Daniel's face changed.

“Enough.”

He moved toward her.

The woman turned and disappeared through a side door.

Daniel followed.

“Daniel!” Sofia called.

He stopped.

For a moment, he looked torn between chasing the woman and staying with her.

Then Richard walked toward the side door.

“I'll handle it.”

Daniel looked at him.

“No.”

Richard's eyes narrowed.

“You don't trust me.”

“Not tonight.”

Richard gave a humorless smile.

“Smart.”

He disappeared after the woman.

Sofia looked at the envelope.

Her hands trembled as she picked it up.

There was no name on the front.

Only three words written in black ink.

FOR SOFIA HAYES.

She looked at Daniel.

“Did you know about this?”

“No.”

“You're lying.”

“I’m not.”

“Then why do you look frightened?”

Daniel came closer.

“Because I know what that handwriting means.”

Sofia's fingers tightened around the envelope.

“Whose handwriting?”

He hesitated.

“Your father's.”

The room seemed to tilt.

“My father?”

Daniel nodded.

“He wrote that?”

“Yes.”

Sofia stared at the envelope.

Her father had never mentioned a letter.

Never mentioned a secret.

Never told her that he had left anything for her.

She looked at Daniel.

“Then why didn't he give it to me?”

“I don't know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I don't expect you to believe anything tonight.”

She tore the envelope open.

Inside was a folded sheet of paper.

Her father's handwriting covered the page.

Sofia recognized it immediately.

Her eyes filled with tears.

She began reading.

My Sofia,

If you are reading this, then something has happened that I prayed would never happen.

Do not trust the Carter family.

Sofia stopped.

Her breath caught.

Daniel watched her carefully.

She continued.

There are things about our past that I never told you. I kept them from you because I believed silence would protect you.

I was wrong.

Sofia's vision blurred.

She wiped her eyes and read the next line.

The night my company collapsed was not caused by the Carters alone.

She looked up.

Daniel's expression was unreadable.

“Keep reading,” he said quietly.

She did.

Someone close to me betrayed our family.

Someone I trusted.

Someone who knew every weakness in our business.

The Carters discovered the betrayal before I did.

But instead of helping me, they used it against us.

Sofia's hands shook.

The next sentence was shorter.

Richard Carter knows the truth.

She stopped breathing.

Daniel looked away.

“No.”

Sofia stared at him.

“Your brother knows?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did he never tell me?”

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“Because Richard believes the truth will destroy more than it fixes.”

“That's not his decision.”

“No.”

“Then what is?”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Finding out who betrayed your father.”

Sofia looked down at the letter again.

There was one final paragraph.

Sofia, if you ever find yourself inside the Carter house, remember this:

The person who appears to hate you may be the one protecting you.

And the person who claims to love you may be the one who wants you destroyed.

The letter ended there.

No signature.

No explanation.

Sofia lowered the paper.

Her mind raced.

The person who appeared to hate her might be protecting her.

Richard.

Could her father have been talking about him?

She looked toward the hallway.

“Where is Richard?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I don't know.”

“We need to find him.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because you don't know what he'll tell you.”

“I don't care.”

“You should.”

Sofia stepped closer.

“My father left me a warning.”

Daniel looked at her.

“And he told me your brother knows the truth.”

“I know.”

“Then I'm going to ask him.”

Daniel caught her wrist.

“Sofia.”

She looked down at his hand.

He released her immediately.

“Sorry.”

She studied his face.

For the first time, she noticed how exhausted he looked.

“You knew my father.”

Daniel went still.

“What?”

“You knew him before this marriage.”

“I met him.”

“When?”

“A few times.”

“Why?”

“Business.”

She didn't believe him.

“You're hiding something.”

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised her.

“What?”

“Not everything I know belongs to me to reveal.”

“That sounds like another excuse.”

“Maybe it is.”

He looked toward the west wing.

“But there is something you need to understand.”

“What?”

“Your father wasn't innocent.”

Sofia froze.

“What did you say?”

Daniel's expression remained serious.

“I said your father made mistakes.”

“Everyone makes mistakes.”

“These were bigger than mistakes.”

“What did he do?”

“I don't know everything.”

“You're doing it again.”

“Sofia, listen.”

“No. You keep giving me pieces of information and expecting me to accept them without questions.”

“Because the full truth could put you in danger.”

“I’m already in danger.”

Daniel said nothing.

Sofia stepped back.

“Then tell me what you can.”

He hesitated.

“Your father was investigating someone inside his company.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

“Richard?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Daniel looked at her.

“His chief financial officer.”

Sofia frowned.

“Mr. Bennett?”

Daniel nodded.

“Marcus Bennett.”

She remembered him.

Marcus Bennett had worked with her father for almost fifteen years. He had attended family dinners. He had given Sofia birthday gifts when she was younger.

“He couldn't have betrayed us.”

Daniel's expression was grim.

“That is exactly why your father trusted him.”

Sofia's heart sank.

“Where is he now?”

Daniel looked away.

“Dead.”

Silence filled the hallway.

Sofia stared at him.

“When?”

“Two years ago.”

“Before my father's company collapsed?”

“Yes.”

“Then how could he have betrayed us?”

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

“Because the betrayal began before he died.”

Sofia felt cold.

“What does that mean?”

“I don't know yet.”

“You're telling me my father was investigating a dead man?”

“He was investigating what Marcus had done before his death.”

Sofia looked at the letter.

Everything she thought she knew was changing.

Her father's company hadn't simply collapsed.

Someone had betrayed him.

The Carters knew.

Richard knew.

Daniel knew pieces.

And somehow, she had been kept outside the truth.

A sound came from the west wing.

Both of them turned.

A door slammed.

Daniel immediately moved forward.

“Stay here.”

Sofia followed.

“No.”

He turned.

“Sofia.”

“I’m coming.”

“This isn't safe.”

“Neither is being kept in the dark.”

He stared at her.

Then sighed.

“Fine. Stay beside me.”

They entered the west wing.

The corridor was darker than the rest of the house.

Old portraits covered the walls.

Dust rested on several pieces of furniture.

At the end stood a wooden door.

It was open.

Daniel stopped.

“This room was supposed to be locked.”

Sofia looked inside.

A desk stood near the window.

Files were scattered across the floor.

Someone had been searching through them.

Daniel entered first.

Sofia followed.

“What are these?”

“Old company records.”

She picked up a folder.

The Carter Group logo was printed across the top.

She opened it.

Her father's name appeared on the first page.

Sofia's heart raced.

“Daniel.”

He came over.

The document contained financial transfers between the Carter Group and her father's company.

Large amounts of money.

Dates.

Account numbers.

Signatures.

“This can't be real.”

Daniel took the folder.

His expression changed.

“Where did you find this?”

“Here.”

He read the page.

“This account was closed years ago.”

“Then why is it here?”

“I don't know.”

A noise came from behind them.

They turned.

Richard stood in the doorway.

His face was pale.

“Put that file down,” he said.

Sofia held it tighter.

“No.”

Richard entered.

“You don't understand what you're holding.”

“Then explain it.”

“I can't.”

“You always say that.”

Richard looked at Daniel.

“You should have kept her out of this.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“She deserves the truth.”

Richard's expression hardened.

“Then you're going to get her killed.”

Sofia's heart stopped.

“Who wants me dead?”

Richard looked directly at her.

“The same person who destroyed your family.”

“Who?”

Richard opened his mouth.

Before he could answer, a loud crash came from downstairs.

Everyone froze.

Then the security alarm began screaming.

Daniel immediately reached for Sofia.

“Stay with me.”

Richard turned toward the door.

“It's too late.”

Sofia looked between them.

“What is happening?”

Richard's face had gone cold.

“Someone has entered the house.”

Daniel pulled Sofia behind him.

“Security will handle it.”

Richard shook his head.

“This isn't an intruder.”

Daniel frowned.

“Then who?”

Richard looked at Sofia.

“The person your father was afraid of.”

The alarm continued.

Footsteps echoed from the staircase.

One set.

Then another.

Someone was coming toward them.

Sofia's heart pounded.

Daniel moved in front of her.

Richard reached inside his jacket.

Sofia stared at him.

“What are you doing?”

“Preparing for the truth.”

The footsteps stopped outside the room.

Silence.

Then a man's voice came through the darkness.

“Richard.”

Richard's face changed.

He whispered one name.

“Bennett.”

Sofia's blood ran cold.

Marcus Bennett was dead.

At least, that was what Daniel had told her.

Yet someone with his voice was standing outside the door.

The handle began to turn.

Sofia could barely breathe.

Her mind rejected the name.

“Bennett is dead,” she whispered.

Daniel looked at her.

“I told you he was.”

Richard's eyes remained fixed on the door.

“That is what everyone was supposed to believe.”

Sofia stepped closer.

“What do you mean?”

Richard lowered his voice.

“Two years ago, a body was found after a fire.”

The family accepted it.

The company closed the investigation.”

“But you didn't.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I saw the body.”

Sofia's stomach twisted.

“And?”

Richard looked at Daniel.

“He wasn't Marcus Bennett.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“You never told me that.”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“Before you left for Europe.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You told me the investigation was finished.”

“I told you what I was allowed to tell you.”

Sofia stared at both brothers.

“You're saying Marcus Bennett has been alive this entire time?”

Richard didn't answer.

A voice came through the door.

“Richard, open the door.”

It was the same voice from the darkness.

The voice came again.

“You brought her here, Daniel. That was a mistake.”

Richard's expression changed.

“He knows you're here.”

“Who is he?” Sofia whispered.

Richard looked at her.

“The man who has been waiting for you to come back.”

“Come back?”

Sofia frowned.

“I have never been here before.”

Richard's eyes darkened.

“Yes, you have.”

Her breath caught.

“What?”

“When you were a child.”

The words struck her like a sudden blow.

Memories flickered through her mind.

A large house.

A staircase.

A woman's voice.

Her father's hand holding hers.

And a little boy standing near a window.

Sofia pressed her fingers against her temple.

“I don't remember.”

“You were too young,” Richard said.

Daniel stared at his brother.

“You never told her.”

“Because her father made me promise.”

Sofia looked at Richard.

“My father knew?”

“Yes.”

“What did he know?”

Richard looked toward the door.

“That you were once a witness.”

“A witness to what?”

Before he could answer, the door burst open.

Daniel pulled Sofia backward.

Richard grabbed Sofia's arm.

“Run.”

They rushed through the hidden doorway behind the bookcase.

Sofia looked back once.

A shadow stood in the smoke.

Watching them.

Then the doorway closed.

Sofia realized the Carter house was never a refuge; it was a place built to keep dangerous secrets buried.
