Seven years had indeed flown by, a whirlwind of childhood discoveries and the undeniable, vibrant presence of my little brother, James. He was a lively, often boisterous, force of nature, filling the mansion with an energy I hadn't known it lacked. Amidst the joyful chaos of James's growth, Cedric remained my steadfast anchor, our bond deepening with each passing year, weathering the inevitable storms of adolescence.

Our friendship was further solidified when we discovered that our parents were not just acquaintances, but genuinely close friends. This revelation opened the doors to frequent sleepovers, shared family vacations, and countless afternoons spent exploring the vast grounds of the Windsor mansion or the more modest, but equally welcoming, Smith residence. We were two halves of a whole, or so I believed.

However, as we transitioned into middle school, a subtle but undeniable shift began to occur. The comfortable, shared world of our childhood started to fragment, revealing stark differences between our lives inside and outside the classroom walls. At home, Cedric was the same supportive, fiercely loyal friend I had always known, offering unwavering camaraderie. But within the social hierarchy of school, a different Cedric emerged. He effortlessly slipped into the ranks of the popular crowd, his charm and athleticism making him a natural fit amongst the cool kids. I, on the other hand, remained a quiet, introverted outsider, content to observe from the periphery. Despite this perplexing duality, I clung to his friendship, grateful for his companionship amidst the often-isolating landscape of middle school.

The fragile tranquility of my existence, however, shattered with brutal force when I became the target of relentless bullying. What began as harmless, juvenile pranks quickly escalated into something far more insidious. It culminated in a humiliating incident in the cafeteria: a carton of expired, curdled milk "accidentally" spilled all over me, its foul stench clinging to my clothes and my dignity. The cacophony of laughter that erupted, including, to my shock and despair, Cedric's, cut deeper than any physical blow. But it was the cruel, mocking taunt that followed, echoing through the cafeteria, that truly pierced my heart: "Look at the orphan! No wonder his real parents didn't want him!"

Faced with such public humiliation, my world spiraling into a blur of shame and pain, I fled the classroom. My legs carried me instinctively to the quiet, rarely used gymnasium, a sanctuary where I could be alone with my shattered thoughts. Questions swirled in my mind like a chaotic vortex, chief among them: Had Cedric betrayed my trust? Had he, my closest confidant, exposed my deepest vulnerability to these cruel strangers?

As the agonizing school day finally began to wane, I knew I needed answers. My feet carried me to our usual meeting spot by the sprawling oak tree, the silent witness to countless shared secrets. When Cedric arrived, his face was streaked with tears, his eyes red-rimmed. His tearful apology caught me off guard, softening the hard shell of my anger. "Edward, I am so, so sorry," he choked out, his voice thick with remorse. "I tried to stop them, I really did. I didn't mean to laugh, it just… it came out. I panicked." His admission of guilt, however, left me reeling, opening a new chasm of confusion.

"But… how did they know?" I managed to croak, the question burning on my lips. "About my adoption?"

Confusion clouded Cedric's tear-streaked face. He vehemently denied any involvement in revealing my secret, his earnestness offering a fleeting glimmer of hope amidst the wreckage of my trust. But my fragile relief was short-lived. He then revealed the crushing truth: an anonymous post, plastered across the school forum, had exposed my adoption to the entire student body. The news hit me like a physical blow, stripping away the last vestiges of my privacy and leaving me exposed and vulnerable.

Despondent, I retreated to the familiar solitude of our car. Williams, usually so cheerful, drove home in a silence heavier than any words, his concern palpable in the tense atmosphere. The crushing weight of discrimination and betrayal hung heavy on my shoulders, suffocating any joy that might have come from my father's recent announcement of my future role as CEO of Windsor Enterprises – a future that now seemed hollow and meaningless.

The rejection, the insidious prejudice, stung with an intensity I hadn't known before. It was a stark, brutal reminder of the injustices that lay beyond my control, things I was targeted for simply by existing. I skipped dinner that night, the thought of food sickening me, choosing instead to drown in a sea of despair. Alone in my room, consumed by anguish, I grappled with the unanswered question that echoed endlessly in the silence: Why me? Amidst the profound darkness, one truth remained frustratingly elusive—the reason for my suffering, a mystery I yearned, with every fiber of my being, to unravel.

  • CHAPTER 21: The First Step

The heavy silence of the conference room was a stark contrast to the storm that had just passed. The echo of angry voices still lingered in the air, but now it was just Cedric and me, two men trapped in the aftermath of a corporate firing squad. I felt a strange sense of relief, a brief moment of calm before the next wave of chaos. My mind, still reeling from the events, tried to process everything that had just been said and done.I spent a moment gathering my thoughts, taking a deep breath to steady myself, before finally getting up. I had to get back to my office, to the work that was now a ticking clock, a deadline hanging over my head. But as I reached for the door, Cedric’s voice, a low and even tone, stopped me dead in my tracks.“Ed, you know those people want you gone, right?”Of course I knew. It was a fact that had been drilled into me since the first day my father introduced me as his heir. The board saw me as an imposter, a placeholder for the "true" heir, James. I turned

"Edward, what's going on? Why did Aetherix release a new prototype so similar to ours?"The questions began the moment my chair scraped against the polished floor. Before I could formulate a response, another voice, dripping with disdain, cut in."Well, Edward, are you really so careless that you allowed such a thing to happen?"The conference room descended into a chaotic storm of accusations. Each board member, a powerful and unforgiving figure, seemed to be competing to see who could land the most damaging blow. My attempts to speak were swallowed by the noise. They complained about their wasted investments, their voices a chorus of greed and contempt. This was nothing new. They had never liked me, the adopted son who had been given a position they believed I didn't deserve."Everyone, please calm down." My father's voice, a deep and steady command, cut through the din.
