Chapter 57:
The days after the charity event faded into a fog of sleepless nights and uneasy mornings for Max. The vision of Roland, his companion, departing with the abducted children, was engraved in his memory. The gunshot, a haunting reminder of the night’s terrors, resonated in his ears.He attempted to call Roland. Once more and once more. His phone was off-limits, ringing perpetually, then heading directly to voicemail. Max sent numerous messages, a combination of urgent appeals, angry requests, and confused inquiries. Every unanswered call eroded his hope, fostering a deepening feeling of betrayal and powerlessness. He strode through the magnificent corridors of the mansion, a trapped tiger, the luxury surrounding him feeling like a jeweled cell. Lena attempted to soothe him, her presence a firm anchor amidst his emotional turmoil, yet even her warmth couldn’t completely reach the icy fear that had taken root in his chest. Finally, Bucky came to him. He found Max in the study, staring b
Chapter 56:
Lena didn’t hesitate. The minute Max said Roland, with the shock in his face she knew something truly awful had just happened. She turned and ran back to the big marquee, her emerald dress glinting against the night.“Bucky! Bucky! ” she shouted in disbelief - through the festival music.Bucky, who'd just stepped into control of the security company under the main gate, turned swiftly at the noise of her desperate screams, saw the fear in her eyes, the fluttering jumble of her normally calm expression. He never said a word, but barked out an order into his earpiece. And within seconds a contingent of Lesley Corps security guards, grimy faced men in dark suits out of the shadows with guns holstered in their hands, broke through the darkness and ran a quick charge at Lena, his eyes looking for anything on the other side.“What is it, Lena? What happened?” Bucky demanded, his voice low and urgent.“Max! In the courtyard! Children! Kidnapped! Roland! He was… he was one of them!” Lena gasp
Chapter 55:
Max's sound was nothing short of primal, like a cacophony of agony; he didn't pause, he didn't think. The sight of the crying children, the rough hands of the men had lit something in him that was all but feral and unbridled: he ran, a blur of justification.Max had just shifted position and he was frozen for a split second as Lena got out of shock. "Max! Wait, I need you! " she shouted but he was already there. He rushed to the man nearest him, and nailed a straight left punch through the sides of his head. That man grunted, and stumbled back, temporarily letting go of the child he was holding. Max was pretty much drunk, so he spun around and nailed a fast kick to the knee of the second man, who grunted and buckled his knee. The kid that he was dragging fell, and ran back into the shadows.Max moved with an untrained, raw fury that was obviously not suited to training, but anger had a horrific effect on him. He tackled one man and got both of them over, then ran up and glanced at the
Chapter 54:
The strings he'd just sung had played in the marquee, teasingly, through the attentive chatter and the clanking of champagne flutes. At the same time Max seemed to have settled into his role as host. He passed by people, handshaked and chatted with, and stopped for a moment to listen to politicians and businessmen, at least, who praised and congratulated him for the "wonderful initiative" taken at La Orphanage. Max was surprisingly good at it, acting in the game as if it were his natural charisma that was shining through. He even managed to steer the conversation in favor of the future need of the orphanage so that pledges could be slipped into their ink.In her words, Lena stayed with him, a splendid presence who immediately attracted admiring glances wherever they went. She was a delightful addition, a good comedian and a real curious person as well, even in the most discerning of guests. They worked together and were indeed magnetic in the room, with laughter echoing over the polit
Chapter 53
Before her hand could descend, a new voice, calm and authoritative, cut through the mockery. “That will be quite enough, Lady Gretchen.”Bucky. He emerged from the crowd of arriving guests, his presence immediately commanding attention. He walked directly to Max, placing a hand on his shoulder. His gaze, usually impassive, held a cold, dangerous glint as he looked at Lady Gretchen.“Lady Gretchen,” Bucky said, his voice even, but with an underlying steel that made her flinch. “Allow me to introduce you. This is Maxwell Lesley. The Chief Executive Officer of Lesley Corporation. And indeed, the richest man in the country.”Lady Gretchen’s face went slack. Her jaw dropped. Her eyes, usually so sharp, were wide with disbelief, scanning Max’s tailored suit, then Bucky’s unyielding stance. “The… the CEO? That… that stupid orphan boy? Maxie?” Her voice was a strangled whisper.“The very same,” Bucky confirmed, his voice chillingly polite. “And now, Lady Gretchen, I believe an apology is in o
Chapter 52
The limousine pulled away, leaving Max standing on the curb, the distant hum of the charity event a beacon in the night. He hailed a cab, the urgency of the situation overriding his earlier emotional turmoil. The short ride felt like an eternity, his mind replaying Roland’s terrified face, the glint of the men’s hands going for their weapons. Finally, the cab screeched to a halt in front of the ornate, temporary gates of ‘La Orphanage.’ The place was transformed. Twinkling lights draped over every archway, soft music drifted from the main marquee, and a steady stream of impeccably dressed guests flowed inside.Max, still a little disheveled from his earlier encounter, approached the entrance. Two burly bouncers, dressed in sharp black suits, stood guard, their expressions stern.“Excuse me,” Max began, trying to sound confident, “I’m here for the charity event.”The larger of the two bouncers, a man with a neck thicker than Max’s thigh, crossed his arms. “Name?”“Max Lesley,” Max repl
