The staircase emptied into a corridor that smelled like a slaughterhouse left open in the summer heat. Dim yellow lights buzzed overhead, casting everything in a sick, flickering glow.
Iron cages lined both walls, each one holding something that breathed too loud and moved too fast in the dark. The roaring had stopped the moment Kyle and Riley reached the bottom step, and the silence that replaced it was somehow worse.
Kyle saw her before his brain could catch up to his eyes.
At the far end of the corridor, inside the smallest cage, Vivian Cross sat with her back against the iron bars and her knees pulled to her chest. Blood covered her like a second skin. Her black hair hung in thick, wet ropes across her face, and through the gaps in that curtain, two amber serpent eyes locked onto Kyle with the still, patient hunger of something that had already decided how it would kill him.
His legs stopped working.
It was not fear, not the regular kind. Something pressed down on his entire body from the outside, a weight that started at the top of his skull and crushed straight through to his ankles. His lungs flattened. His vision narrowed to a single point, and that point was Vivian's unblinking stare. The basement walls seemed to close in around him, tightening like the coils of something enormous and cold.
"Kyle, don't look at her eyes!" Riley grabbed his arm and shoved herself between them, breaking his line of sight. The pressure released instantly, and Kyle crumbled forward, gagging, his hands on his knees. "Her Ability is illusion based. She projects pressure through eye contact. If you freeze up like that again, you're dead before I can do anything about it."
"That was an Ability?" Kyle wheezed, spitting bile onto the concrete floor. "I thought the building was falling on me."
"Pathetic." Vivian's voice drifted from the cage, low and raw, scraped down to something barely human. "You sent me here to be eaten alive, and you can't even stand up when I look at you. I've seen dying rats with more spine than you, Kyle Cole."
Kyle opened his mouth to answer, but the sound that came out was just air.
A deafening crash cut through the basement. Three cages down from Vivian, something massive slammed against iron bars with enough force to buckle them outward. A second hit. A third. On the fourth impact, the cage door exploded off its hinges and skidded across the concrete floor, throwing sparks in a wide arc.
The thing that stepped out was a bear, but wrong. Four star mutated, easily eight feet tall at the shoulder, its brown fur patchy and split open in places where bone plates had grown through the skin like armor. Its eyes were milky white and furious, and its jaws hung open wide enough to fit a man's entire torso inside.
It swung its head toward Kyle and Riley and charged.
"Get behind me!" Riley shoved Kyle backward and planted herself in the bear's path, both hands raised. Pale blue light pulsed from her palms, but it was soft, thin, flickering. Healing energy. Not a weapon. Not a shield. Just the warm, useless glow of someone whose entire power was built to mend broken things, not break them.
The bear hit her like a truck. Riley caught its open jaws with both hands, her feet sliding backward on the wet floor, her arms shaking under the weight. Blue light sprayed from her fingers and scorched across the bear's muzzle, but it did nothing. The beast shook its head and threw Riley sideways into a row of cages. She hit the bars hard, bounced off, and rolled to her feet with blood running from a cut above her left eye.
"Run, you useless insect!" Riley screamed at Kyle as the bear rounded on her again. "Find somewhere to hide!"
Kyle stumbled backward, tripping over his own feet, and his spine collided with cold iron bars. A hand closed around his ankle with a grip like a steel trap.
He looked down.
Vivian's blood slicked fingers were wrapped around his leg, her face pressed between the bars, her amber eyes burning up at him from inches away. A thin, cracked smile split across her lips.
"Running from a bear." Her voice was almost a purr, soft and dripping with poison. "This is how you die, Kyle. Screaming and crawling on a basement floor like the cockroach you are. I want you to know that I'm going to enjoy watching it happen."
A terrible, animal shriek echoed down the corridor. Riley hit the ground again, and this time she did not get up immediately. The bear stood over her, one massive paw raised, ready to come down and end it.
Kyle looked at Riley bleeding on the floor. He looked at Vivian's hand around his ankle. He looked at the bear, and something inside his chest broke open, not courage, not bravery, just the raw, ugly desperation of a man with absolutely nothing left.
He dropped to his knees in front of Vivian's cage.
"Please." His voice cracked on the word and he did not care. "Please help us. I know what he did to you. I know what I... what this body did to you. And I know you want me dead. But Riley is out there dying right now because of me. She doesn't deserve that. She never did anything to you."
Vivian's grip on his ankle did not loosen. Her eyes did not soften. "Why should I care if the cat dies? She stood by while you sold me. They all did."
"Then let me give you what you actually want!" Kyle grabbed the bars of her cage with both hands, his knuckles white, his face so close to hers he could smell the blood drying on her skin. "Divorce. The second we get home, I sign the papers. You and Riley both. You walk free. No more bond. No more burial law. No more me."

Chapter 6 Part 2
The energy in the room changed instantly. Riley's anger went cold. Bianca's jaw unclenched. Even Scarlett lowered her teacup half an inch, which for her was practically a standing ovation."The terminal is linked to my biometrics," Kyle told them, leaning back with his arms folded. "I'm the only one who can access the star map. I'm the only one who can accept missions. And I'm the only one who can authorize any of you to cross the fog barrier into the west side, where the star stones you need to rank up are actually located."He let that sink in for a moment."The previous version of me," Kyle chose his words carefully, "did not accept a single mission for the past six months. Not one. He sat in this house and watched all five of you stagnate while the protagonist next door sent his wives on missions every week. His golden flood dragon ranked up twice. His tiger evolved a new Ability. And meanwhile, every one of you has been stuck at the same level since the day you were matched."Nob
Chapter 6 Part 1
Kyle looked at the five women sitting around the dining table, each one capable of killing him in ways he probably could not even imagine, and made a decision that would have sounded insane to anyone watching from the outside. He was going to stop pretending to be a good person. The novel's original Kyle Cole was a villain. A petty, jealous, abusive villain who existed in the story for one reason only, to be horrible and then to be destroyed by the protagonist. And the five women sitting in front of Kyle right now had lived through every second of that horror. They knew what the villain looked like. They knew how he talked, how he moved, how he smiled before he hurt them.If Kyle tried to play nice, they would see through it in a heartbeat. They would assume it was a trap, a new form of cruelty dressed up in soft words, and they would move to eliminate the threat before it could evolve. But if he leaned into the role, if he stayed sharp and unpredictable and just dangerous enough to k
CHAPTER 5 PART 2
The room went still. Even the buzzing overhead light seemed to hold its breath."So here's what's going to happen." Kyle pointed at the plate. "You are going to take this thing back into the kitchen, throw it in the garbage, and make me something I can actually eat. Spicy wings. I want spicy wings. And if I don't have a plate of spicy wings in front of me in twenty minutes, I'm walking upstairs and signing all four certificates tonight. Every single one of you walks free, which means every single one of you loses the bond, which means the burial law no longer protects you from each other or from whatever is out there in the dead zones. Is that what you want, Bianca?"Bianca's smirk was gone. Her dark eyes had gone wide, just a fraction, and her jaw was locked so tight Kyle could see the muscles jumping beneath the skin."You wouldn't," she whispered."Try me." Kyle held her gaze and did not blink. "Spicy wings. Twenty minutes."Bianca stared at him for five long, silent seconds. Then
Chapter 5 PART 1
Kyle scanned the table one more time. Bianca blocking the door with that predator's smirk. Riley radiating fury so hot it could warm the room. Vivian watching him like prey she had already killed in her mind. Scarlett sipping tea without acknowledging he existed at all.And then there was Hailey. She sat in the last remaining chair at the corner of the table, her brown curls tucked behind both ears, her hands folded neatly in her lap. She was the only one in the room who was not openly glaring at him, staring at him with murderous intent, or pretending he was invisible. Her expression was soft, almost polite, and in a room full of loaded weapons pointed at his face, that tiny sliver of gentleness felt like the only safe corner left.Kyle walked over and pulled out the chair beside her."This seat taken?"Hailey looked up at him with wide, brown eyes and shook her head slowly. "No. Go ahead."He sat down. For exactly one second, he felt something close to relief. Then Hailey scooted he
Chapter 4 Part 2
Kyle ripped two pieces of cotton from the roll on the nightstand and stuffed them deep into both ears. Riley's screaming faded to a muffled buzz. He sank onto the edge of the bed, his heart hammering, his hands shaking, and let out a long, slow breath through his teeth."She can scream all she wants," he murmured to himself. "The law says a wife cannot divorce without the husband's written consent. As long as I don't sign, they can't leave. And as long as they can't leave, they have to keep me alive."It was a horrible thought. He knew it was a horrible thought. But it was also the only thought keeping him breathing. He pulled up the terminal beside the bed. The small screen glowed pale blue in the dim room, and he navigated to the star map, the government registry that held the profiles of every matched wife under his name.Five files. Five faces.Riley Fox. Three star Firetail Cat. Combat rating: low. Primary Ability: advanced healing and cellular regeneration. The system classified
Chapter 4 Part 1
Blake Sterling stood on the path between the two houses with his hands in his pockets and a smile so warm it could have melted snow. His five wives fanned out behind him in a perfect formation, each one tall, polished, and radiating the kind of effortless power that made Kyle's entire household look like a collection of stray animals dragged in from the rain.Blake's eyes moved slowly over the three of them. Kyle, dirt caked and trembling. Riley, bleeding from a gash above her eye. Vivian, barefoot, blood soaked from head to toe, with gaps in the dark scales along her neck where she had ripped them out herself."Kyle, what happened out there?" Blake's voice dripped with concern so perfectly performed it could have won an award. "You three look like you barely made it back. Is everyone alright?""We're fine," Kyle muttered, stepping in front of Vivian without thinking about it. "Just had a rough supply run."Blake tilted his head, his gaze drifting past Kyle's shoulder and settling on
